LET’S CONNECT May is here and the end of the 2017- 2018 school year is upon us. We are not at the finish line just yet, but we are in the last leg of the race. We are busily preparing to recog- nize students for the many accom- plishments made this year. We have already recognized the Volunteers of the Year and Business Partners of the Year. Schools are gearing up for end-of-year testing. Testing proc- tors are steadily being recruited. The Superintendent's Academic Team Awards are set. Proms are under- way.... and yes, we are getting ready to congratulate and send our 2018 seniors off into the world. As we graduate another senior class, we begin a new class of kindergart- ners. Kindergarten registration has taken place and we are so excited to start the journey with our new stu- dents. May brings an opportunity to cel- ebrate educators and school staff. The week of May 7th - May 11th will be Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week. Please take a moment to thank an educator or support staff member for all they do for our children and com- munity. ~ Larry W. The ECPPS Reality Store was held at Museum of the Albemarle on March 29th. This event is an interactive simulation of life in which eighth graders are assigned a career, an income and family life. Students visited ten stations representing various life experiences/ expenses. Students gained an understanding of the reality of saving money, paying utilities, rent or mortgage, car payments, as well as setting up bank accounts, visiting the doctor, paying for child care, buying groceries – all based on the salaries for their assigned career and family. As students traveled through the stations, they tracked their expenses and deducted the costs at each station. The Reality Store provided stu- dents with a glimpse into the future and helped them understand financial planning and why goal setting, decision making and career plan- ning is so important. ECPPS worked with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce to secure volunteers for the event. The following volunteers made the experience truly meaningful for the students: Lori Meads and Wayne Matthews (Museum of the Albemarle), Bill Blake (Albemarle Area United Way), Rhonda McCullen and Kenya Reid (Kids-N-Play), Deborah Malenfant (Elizabeth City Downtown, Inc.), Pam Barber, Diane Gardner, Gary Hobbs and Rhonda Twiddy (Long & Foster Real Estate), Holly Staples (Elizabeth City Chamber of Commerce), Kim Bright (True Images Salon), Trey Colbert (Performance Chevrolet), Lauren Hill and Chris Williamson (Piedmont Natural Gas), Lora Aples & Cassandra Peele (Northeastern Workforce Development Board), and Linda Turner. BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING - MARCH 2018

1/4 Cent Sales Tax Referendum - May 8th BallotCentral Elementary Students Hatch ChicksMason Lawrence, extension agent with Pasquotank County 4-H, worked with second grade students at Central Elementary to hatch baby chicks.

Mr. Lawrence provided information for the stu-dents on how to care for the eggs in prepara-tion for hatching. Through a candling process, students were able to view inside the eggs while they were developing. Students were very excit-ed when the eggs started to rock in preparation for hatching. The chicks hatched just before spring break and students were able to learn how to care for them.

Central Elementary greatly appreciated Mr. Lawrence sharing his time and resources to pro-vide this learning experience for the second grade students.

Eighty students from Northeastern High School vol-unteered and supported the 2018 Pasquotank/Camden Special Olympics held on April 13, 2018.

In an effort to financially support education for this community, the Pasquotank County Commissioners voted to place a "1/4 of a penny" sales tax referendum on the May 8th ballot.

If passed, this referendum would add 1/4 of one penny to sales tax within Pasquotank County. A tax that would be paid by all consumers, not just residents. Many agencies and organizations have endorsed this referen-dum and have adopted resolutions in support of it.

The ECPPS Board of Education continues to meet with community organizations to provide informa-tion on the referendum. We are permitted to educate and provide information; however, we cannot advocate. We will hold our second public informational meeting on April 24th at 7 pm at Knobbs Creek Recreation Center. More information on the referendum is available at www.ecpps.k12.nc.us.
