The college & Department of Economics: a brief history
St. Albert’s College is an autonomous college situated at the heart of
Cochin city, affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and is functioning
under the Management of Archdiocese of Verapoly. The seeds of this hub of
higher learning had sawn when St. Albert’s High School commenced its
functioning in 1892. On 18th August, 1898 the school got the recognition of
Madras University. The Madras University upgraded St. Albert’s High School to a
second grade College in 1946.
The College began to function on the 16th July 1946 in the old High
School building with 150 students in the Intermediate class. Degree courses in
Botany, Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Economics were introduced in 1947. The
classes were shifted to the new building just opposite to the old school building in
1951.
In 1958, when the Kerala University Act came into force, the affiliation
was shifted to Kerala University. In 1983, when the Mahatma Gandhi University
was established, the College became affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University.
In 2009, the college was awarded ‘A’ Grade by NAAC. In 2010, the College
was recertified for ISO 9001: 2008 by TUV Rheinland. The College has also been
selected under FIST scheme of DST and Star College program of DBT.
MA Economics Course was sanctioned by Kerala Government as an aided
course and started in 2013.
In 2016 March, UGC granted Autonomous status to the college. In 2016
NAAC reaccredited the College with ‘A’ Grade for the 2nd time.

PSC Coaching is an extension activity of the Department. The program was inaugurated by
the Principal, Dr. M.L. Joseph. The coaching given by the department to all streams of the
students of the college at free of cost. It was a 100 hours practical session on reasoning, GK,
and numerical ability. 50 plus students of the college benefitted from the program

Econ was the Cultural Celebration of the department. 120 plus students of the department were participated in the programs
like Rangapooja, Thiruvathira, Kathak, Dolak, Margamkali, Modern Oppana, Mime, Fusion dance, Cinematic Dance,
Instumental music and Musical performance. Prof. Asha Mariya Thomas was the convenor of the program. The team spirit of
the department students made program a successful one and received appreciation from all corners.
