IT MATTERSArchitecture and Design field nowadays facing not only the challenge of creating something new, unique and functional, but also trying to build more eco friendly buildings and objects we come in contact every day. Design world is focusing on using sustainable materials more then ever and trying to set up our minds in the same way.

Luckily today people tends not to only look for good architects or designers, but tends to care more about their contribution towards sustainable materials, energy efficiency, carbon waste or end of life disposal/recycling. Consumers are increasingly aware of the harmful raw materials and unfair production techniques many makes use.We have the opportunity make a difference to our future well being.

Most of the todays “Green architects” believe, that in the near future all buildings will be green and that we will share knowledge of identify energy savings and design innovative build. For example new projects already reduced energy and carbon emissions in average by 30%.

IT’S TIME

Interiors and commercial space designed by Georgina Gibson

Many interior designers are acknowledged about climate changes and contributed to more energy-efficient and sustainable design minimising it’s impact on environments by using different techniques or inventions.

One of the leading names in the industry is definitely Georgina Gibson. Her projects are full of the green ideas put into reality.

* Reduce heath losses and make use of natural light, for example by using innovative light tubes to increase light in darker spaces* Using energy efficient heating system and reduce electricity demand* Solar panels producing its own energy* Good insulation also reducing running costs* LED lighting considerably reducing cost due to it’s long life* Use of sustainable sources from companies who also adopted idea of ‘Greener world’* Use of natural materials from local suppliers* Use of recycled materials and materials, which are easy to expose at its end of life* Reduce water consumption* Using companies, which reducing carbon foot printing

THINKING DIFFERENT?New innovative thinking is focusing more on developing the proven methods and improving the area of environmentally friendly architecture.

Recent exhibition curated by the Museo Della Merda, which took place in Milan presented number of rooms filled with objects made of animal excrements. Excrements are mixed with clay, creating durable eco friendly material. Its characteristics can easily compete with terracotta. This amazing material is such a great invention and word needs to be spread out.

”We were horrified at the idea that shit was considered waste," curator Luca Cipelletti told Dezeen at the press preview last night. "So we mixed shit with clay to create Merdacotta – the new enemy of terracotta."

FEW OF THE MANYDesigners uses many different materials to build their design pieces. Natural materials are still very popular, however instead of solid wood for example, they tend to use materials, which has less impact on our environment, such us renewable bamboo. Bamboo possessed from many benefits like being natural anti-bacterial material, which is also water resistant.

Sesshu Design Associates in Scottsdale from Arizona designed famous and innovative collection for outdoor made of bamboo wood. The vision of Sesshu is to produce innovative, timeless and sustainable interiors. They believe in correct use of skills and creativity, while producing environmentally friendly designs.Sesshu is one of the many, who took advantage of qualities, possibilities and amazing characteristics of sustainable materials.

INSTEAD OF REPLACE, REUSE!Exciting part of being product designer is to create something beautiful from waste materials and give to it a new life. Combination of original elements that give retired materials a fresh and appealing look often looks also strikingly beautiful.

Aviv-based Ori Ben-Zvi, who runs Studio Ubico uses off-cuts, scrap, reclaimed and recycled materials and environmentally conscious finishes to creates from them spectacular design pieces. This small production unit is combination of good craftsmanship and urban gathering and reclaiming bringing function and longevity.

YStudio from Taiwan established in 2012 for example exploring vanishing cultures and integrate them into modern life. Also, instead of dumping perfectly serviceable items, studio finds them new use. Then what was once old camera now could become a beautiful lamp. Reclaimed and re-used materials require almost no energy for reprocessing, which is main reason of using these reclaimed materials.

RESPONSIBILITYDesigners following the idea of Eco friendly built are responsible to make sure, that all aspects of the building from exterior to interior are environmentally friendly, can be reused, are free of toxins, energy-saving, cost-effective and free of allergy/cancer causing substances. Even operation, construction and maintenance supposed to be done in a manner that it does not affect the environment and still provides comfort, security and looks pleasant.

Giorgio Caporaso, a product designer from Italy recently presented on Design Junction in London eco-friendly modular furniture. Furniture is combined from honeycombed cardboard and natural materials. All exposed pieces are extremely sturdy and long lasting, they can be recycled or easily repaired at the end of its life.

Zoe Murphy, British designer is also encouraging others to recycle unwanted items and re-use them. She is fascinated by potential of upcycle existing furniture and textiles. Inspiration came from her home town Kent and its sea-side cafes. She buys right pieces from local suppliers and transform them into innovative simply beautiful furniture.

MOVING FORWARDSkyfarm project, the bamboo framed vertical farm officially revealed in 2014 showed different perspective of future in agriculture. Behind this innovative idea is Rogers Stirk Harbour and his Partners who picked up the sustainability prize for this amazing idea at the Architectural Review MIPIM Future Projects Awards.

Multi-storey hyperboloid structure is combining different types of farming and produces its own energy with roof mounted wind turbines and water tanks.

Main reason behind this project is question, how countries will produce enough food for the world's growing population. Farm could be especially useful in cities with luck of soil space or rural countries.

Structure of the building could be then adapted depending on the earth's latitude, amount of sunlight or climate to create optimum growing conditions.

CONCLUSIONThese few pages provided brief overview of sustainable design and Designers / Architects, who support idea of ‘Greener world’.

There should be no doubts on importance of our contribution towards more energy-efficient, sustainable and eco-friendly build to stop global warming, deforestation, minimise carbon foot print, pollution and many more.

The urgency of sustainable innovation is coming globally recognised and discussions are on - going, however society is still a long way from making thenecessary changes. Its heartwarming to know, that design world is trying to widespread the word and helping us understand the impact of our actions.

There are many exiting challenges ahead. Its still early days, however even doing a little is more beneficial than doing nothing at all.
