ECKERD COLLEGE IS ONE OF JUST 40 COLLEGES FEATURED IN COLLEGES THAT CHANGE LIVES.

You could play it safe and stick to the old familiar paths. Or you could strike out in a new direction, meet people from towns you’ve never heard of—even learn to think in different ways.

College is a journey. It unfolds moment to moment, changing direction as you grow and refine your plans.

THE JOURNEY BEGINS

CTCL

Page 4: Eckerd College Travel Brochure

2

A THREE-WEEK ORIENTATIONThe first of these is Autumn Term, a three-week class you’ll take on campus in August. This class will introduce you to other first-year students and to the ideas and habits you’ll need for the journey ahead.

The professor who teaches your Autumn Term class will be your mentor throughout your first year. Your mentor will help you map out a personal plan of study—including study abroad, research, independent study and internships—that guides you toward a career or graduate school.

Have you ever noticed how sometimes you can’t tell what you’re looking at until you take a step back? College can be like that. So we’ve put together a series of courses to help you make sense of it.

FREE YOUR MIND

THE 4-1-4 CALENDARAs an Eckerd student, you’ll take four classes in the Fall Semester and four in the Spring Semester. Between the two semesters is Winter Term, a three-week term dedicated to just one class. Many spend Winter Term traveling with their professors.

Just think—you could be studying the business and cultures of Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia next January. Or tracking howler monkeys in the tropical rainforests of Belize. Like the bright lights? Head to New York City and Chicago to study the architecture and arts of these epic cities.

Study abroad isn’t limited to one major—from environmental studies to international law, we offer something for every interest.

For us, study abroad is as natural as breathing. Every year, our students head off to learn Italian in Sicily, do lab research with Chinese scientists in Xiamen or explore the ancient ruins of Peru. They come back with a better sense of who they are and how they fit into the global village.

TRAVEL THE WORLD

300+ DESTINATIONS OFFERED EVERY YEAR INCLUDE SOUTH AFRICA, FIJI, MEXICO, CUBA, SPAIN, ENGLAND, FRANCE AND GREECE.

LILLIAN McCORMICK ’11 WON A NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN 2013. SHE IS THE 24TH ECKERD GRAD TO WIN THIS AWARD.

THE SECRET TO THEIR SUCCESS• A Four-Year Plan is provided to all new students, mapping out career-planning

tasks for each year.

• The majority of students complete at least one internship, research study, service-learning project or study abroad term.

• The Eckerd Edge program provides free career coaching and coursework for those still searching for work or graduate school six months after graduation.

Within a year of leaving Eckerd, three-quarters of our graduates are working full time; nearly a third are in graduate schools like Georgetown, UC Davis and Cornell. (Some are doing both.)
