Using the new Encore search (a simple Google style search box), you can type in anything: author names, book titles, journal titles, keywords. For a search on a particular topic select keyword search in the classic catalogue (or use Encore). If you don’t get many results, use fewer keywords, more general terms, or try truncation (e.g. typing in econom* will retrieve records containing economic, economics, economy, etc.). Think about synonyms (words that mean essentially the same thing) & use the OR operator, e.g.: work or labor or employment. If you are finding too many results, then use more keywords and/or more specific terms. The Library catalogue does index the contents (chapter headings) within books, but browsing the shelves in the relevant classified sequences will also help locate titles of interest. For an outline of the classification, see the appendix at the end. To find a periodical or journal do a periodical title search. The catalogue record will tell you the classmark and also what print & online holdings we have, and provide a link to the online version. Printed journals are for reference use in the Library, and mostly shelved at HB 1, HC 1, & HG 1.

1. The Library catalogue

http://serlib0.essex.ac.uk/ (classic catalogue)http://encore.essex.ac.uk/iii/encore/?lang=eng (Encore search box)

The catalogue is the definitive record of what the Library holds in print form, and has access to in electronic form, including all of our print and online books and journals, as well as all databases that the Library subscribes to.

If we don’t have a journal that is on your reading list, then we should have a xerox of the article in the XD collection at the circulation desk, so do a search for the author or title of the article. Please ask at the circulation desk for the XD number of the article you want. It will be issued to you as a short loan item.

In Encore you have the additional option of searching for journal articles on a topic. Simply switch the tab at the top from “catalogue” to “article” mode. This is a rough and ready way of quickly finding some articles. For a more detailed literature search better results will be obtained from searching individually some of the databases listed in section 5.

The Online Reading Lists facility on ORB is at: http://orb.essex.ac.uk/ec/

Page 2: EC831 Library Resources

Clicking on the hyperlinked classmarks within a reading list will take you straight to the appropriate record in the library catalogue. You may need to type campus\ before your network login to access the online lists.

You can renew your books online, book short loan items, and reserve titles that are currently on loan (click on the Recall/Request a hold button at the top of the catalogue record to do this).

2. Reference Material

Dictionaries & encyclopaedias can be useful starting points for your research, giving you an idea of key concepts, terminology, and often providing some references as well.

General language dictionaries are shelved in the Student Collection on floor 1, along the lakeside (Reference Dictionary). There are multilingual dictionaries for Economics & Finance at the beginning of this section, Ref. Dict. HB-HG. Relevant reference books can be found interfiled with the loanable books on floor 3, notably:

Economics dictionaries Ref. HB 61Finance dictionaries Ref. HG 151

Good comprehensive sources are:

New Palgrave dictionary of economics. 2008 Ref. HB 61.N4 & OnlineNew Palgrave dictionary of money & finance. 1992 Ref. HG 151

(another set is kept in short loan)Oxford encyclopaedia of economic history. 2003 Ref. HC 15

3. Library Web Pages - Electronic Resources (ebooks, ejournals & databases)

The library subscribes to thousands of electronic journals and books relevant to Economics, and also provides access to an extensive range of databases.

Always check the library catalogue & access e-resources through the Library web pages. Access through Google or other browsers is not recommended, as you need to be verified as a University of Essex student – this happens when you type in your password as you access an e-resource through the Library webpages.

Read the notes Accessing e-Resources if you are having difficulty accessing a resource. If the problem persists please let me know.

The catalogue will indicate whether we have online access to an individual online journal, & will also say what volumes are available online. The quickest way to search for online journal articles on a particular topic (the literature search) is by using the

Page 3: EC831 Library Resources

Encore catalogue (articles tab), but better results will be obtained by searching databases individually - the most useful ones are mentioned below.

4. Library Webpages - Subject Guides

There is a library web page for Economics. You may also find the one for Accounting/Finance useful for sources of company financial data. As well as access to library databases, they include links to reputable internet resources, especially relevant sources of freely available economic & financial data. This may save you time and offer more reliable information than searching via Google, etc.

5. Library Webpages – Databases

Access from the Economics subject page or from the eResources & Databases homepage http://serlib0.essex.ac.uk/search/h * - indicates key database

These databases all include journals to which the Library does not subscribe. Check the ASL catalogue to see if we have access to a journal – we may have it in print form, or online via a different database.

C. Working Papers

These are important in economics, as they are often the vehicle for reporting current research, usually prior to publication in academic journals. The Library subscribes to two major series:

CEPR discussion papers Online no. 2050- 1999-NBER working papers Online 1994-

Hundreds of thousands of working papers can be searched collectively through two excellent freely available databases: RePEc and SSRN. Both offer the full text of the majority of papers. RePEc also includes journal articles (not all full text).

7. Inter-Library Loans & Further Help

In the course of your research you may come across references to books, journal articles, conference papers, theses, or other publications not in the Library. If these are essential to your work, then we will obtain the material for you from other libraries. Please bear in mind that this is an expensive service for the Library to provide, and should be used sparingly.

You need to fill out a form (available at the ILL counter on floor 1) for each item & then get your supervisor to sign the request.More information can be found at: http://libwww.essex.ac.uk/ill.htm

For further help feel free to contact me directly.
