PARISH VISION STATEMENT As the Parish of Saint Columbkille, we strive to be a welcoming, caring, Catholic family that transforms lives, proclaiming the Kingdom of God.

(Vision is about who we want to be in the future…)

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT As missionary disciples of Jesus, being formed as a community through Scripture and Sacraments, we are sent into the world to joyfully proclaim the Gospel with our lives.

(Mission is about what we do now…)

OUR WEEKLY MISSION Thank You, Bishop Nelson Perez! Like so many of you, I was surprised to learn last week that Pope Francis had named Bishop Nelson the new Archbishop-Elect of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia effective February 18th. Bishop Nelson came to Cleveland just over two years

ago and in a relatively short time brought a renewed hope and vision for missionary discipleship in our diocese. We were blessed at St. Columbkille to have Bishop Nelson visit our parish and school five times over the past 27 months! I am particularly grateful to Bishop Nelson for installing me as your pastor, confirming our 8th graders, visiting our school, talking to our right to life group, and installing men as acolytes who are in formation to the diaconate. Please join me in keeping Bishop Nelson in your prayers and pray for our entire diocese as we await the appointment of the next Bishop of Cleveland. Adult Education with Dr. Matthew DuBroy: Did you know that God has given you spiritual gifts that are to be used in charity or service to build up the Body of Christ and the Church? Sacred Scripture and the Catechism identifies 25 charisms that the Holy Spirit bestows upon baptized Christians. Over my ten years of priesthood, I have discovered that my three strongest spiritual gifts are discernment of spirits, leadership and prophecy. Using these specific gifts energizes my soul and brings great success and happiness to my life! Join Dr. DuBroy at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evenings in the school library for seven weeks to discover your supernatural charisms and how to best use them to bring souls to Jesus Christ. See the full page ad in the bulletin for further details or visit our parish website to register. Space is limited and registration is needed in order to purchase materials and books. Support our Seminarians! Without seminarians, we would have no priests. We are blessed at St. Columbkille to have received Father Michael Petkosek as a newly ordained priest straight out of the seminary and we have one young man from our parish, John Desmarteau, in formation for the priesthood at Borromeo College Seminary. On Sunday, March 22nd, from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. is the 36th annual Bishop’s Seminary Brunch at Executive Caterer at Landerhaven. I am looking for at least 10 people to attend this awesome fundraising event and sponsor a table from St. Columbkille. Tickets cost $45.00 per person or $450.00 to sponsor a table of 10 with all proceeds benefiting our diocesan seminarians. If you are interested in attending or sponsoring a table, please contact Fr. Suso by phone or email in the rectory by Monday, February 3rd, to sign up to go. Never forget, the Lord is with us, always!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRAYER

FATHER JAMIE’S HEALING HUMOR A husband was standing on the bathroom scale, desperately holding his stomach in. His wife, thinking he was trying to reduce his weight, remarked: “I don’t think that helps.” “It does,” he said. “It’s the only way I can see the numbers.” (from THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF HUMOR, edited by Geoff Tibballs, 2000) What gives weight to our faith is what the feast of today shows us. Mary and Joseph took the 40-day old child Jesus to the temple to present Him back to God the Father, who sent the gift of His Son to the world. Shouldn’t we be making a present of our life to God as well?

WEEKLY SCRIPTURE PASSAGE As we pray together the verse from the book of Hebrews, let us rejoice knowing that Christ the high priest has come to heal our brokenness. “Therefore, he had to become like his brothers in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people.” Hebrews 2:15

FEBRUARY 2, 2020 MARCH FOR LIFE

4

This year’s pilgrimage to the March for Life was a great success! The pilgrims from St. Columbkille offered Masses, prayed,

marched, and encountered society with joy all in the good work of speaking for the unborn and their mothers. Thank you to

everyone who supported us in prayer or gave financial support. Your generosity has borne good fruit and touched many lives in

ways that we will probably not realize fully in this life. Deo gratias!

PRAYER OPPORTUNITIES & FINANCIAL NEWS

R.C.I.A.! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is underway. However, it is always the right time to respond to the Lord’s invitation to a full life. If you or someone you know is interested to learn more about the Catholic faith or to explore life in the Church, contact Fr. Michael at (216) 524-1987. Inquiries that begin now will most likely join next year’s formal RCIA instruction. However, every person’s journey is unique, so there’s no reason not to begin a relationship with the Church, even just to have a conversation! Nowhere does Jesus say, “See me next year.” Call today!

ADULTS IN NEED OF CONFIRMATION? If for any reason you’ve missed the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, classes to prepare adults for the Sacrament will be offered by Deacon Paul in the Parish Center. For details and to register, please call the rectory at (216) 524-1987.

BAPTISM PREPARATION CLASSSATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd Are you planning to have a child baptized in the next few months? Have you attended a Baptism preparation class? Baptismal preparation is required for parents before their first child’s Baptism. The next Baptism

class will be held in the Parish Center at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22nd. Call the Parish Office at (216) 524-1987 to register.

2020 CHILDREN/YOUNG ADULT ENVELOPES The 2020 envelopes for children and young adults are available for pickup at the rectory office. If you are a young adult, and do not already have your envelopes, please call the rectory before you come in. If you wish your child to receive envelopes, please call the rectory before you come to pick them up.

CATCHING FIRE – YOUNG ADULT GROUP Our “Catching Fire” young adult group (ages 18 to 39) will meet on Sunday evenings. The group meets in the Parish Center from 7:00-9:00

p.m., with its focus being prayer, fellowship and faith formation with the mission for forming intentional disciples of Jesus. Please join us Sunday evening, February 2nd.

FINANCIAL NEWS AND NOTES• When writing checks to the parish, please write out

the entire year 2020 in the date in order to avoid any potential fraud. By writing out the date as 1/1/20 (January 1, 2020), the year can be fraudulently changed to 2021, or any other date in this century. Instead, make sure when you’re dating documents in 2020 that you write the year out in full.

• Please refrain from sending us one single check attached to multiple unmarked envelopes. The parish has no way of knowing how much money is being designated for each unmarked envelope, therefore, they must be returned. Please carefully mark your envelopes with the proper dollar amount so you can receive credit for your donation.

• Tuition assistance envelopes are processed separately from weekly offertory. Therefore, please write a separate check when contributing to tuition assistance.

END OF YEAR CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS 2019

For the second year now, the parish office has been tracking the contributions of registered parishioners who donated by use of their envelopes or checks in order to produce the required statement of these contributions for tax purposes. Please contact the parish office at (216) 524-1987 and give us your name, envelope number, address and phone number and you will be added to a list in order to receive a year-end statement of your 2019 contributions. If you donated through Faith Direct, you will automatically receive a contribution statement from them, and you don’t have to call the office. Checks received after January 1st, 2020 but dated in 2019 will not be included in the 2019 contribution report. These checks will be credited in 2020. The date of the check does not control when it is recorded.

WEEKLY OFFERTORYThe offertory collection for the weekend of January 25th and 26th was $13,908.62. The first half of January's Faith Direct contributions were $5,862.00. Thank you for your continued generosity to our parish!

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL “Do you want Our Lord to give you many graces? Visit Him often. Do you want Him to give you few graces? Visit Him seldom. Visits to the Blessed Sacrament are powerful and an indispensable means of overcoming the attacks of the devil. Make frequent visits to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and the devil will be powerless against you.” St. John Bosco The Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, located in the Parish Center, is open daily between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. You DO NOT need an appointment. The Chapel is open to scheduled adorers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Anyone interested in spending a specific hour each week with Jesus, please call Scott or Amanda at (216) 310-6831.

YOUTH SERVICE PROJECT; DONATIONS, PLEASE!

The Saint Columbkille Youth group will be participating in a service project for the less fortunate at our annual Youth Renewal, and we are looking for donations of all sorts. We will be creating care packages of items such as nonperishable foods, toiletries, books and games for kids, socks, hats, and gloves, and anything else that may warm the hearts and hands of our homeless brothers and sisters in need. These items must be new or very gently used. Contact [email protected] with any questions, and may you never forget how truly blessed you are!

GOOD SAMARITAN ITEMS NEEDED Our Good Samaritan Ministry needs certain basic items to fill our pantry. The needed items are: toothpaste, pasta,

pasta sauces, canned meats, canned fruit, coffee, tea, laundry detergent and dish detergent. As a parish, you have always been very generous in the past and we know we can count on your continued support! Thank you…

LET THE CHILDREN COME TO ME!” Mt 10:14 Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) is now at

St. Columbkille! All children 4-8 years old are invited to attend Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) every Sunday during the 10:30

a.m. Mass. There is no fee, sign-up or registration! Every Sunday during the 10:30 a.m. Mass, the priest celebrant invites the children to gather in front of the altar. The children, guided by a CLOW leader, then process to the church basement. Once assembled in the basement, the CLOW leader proclaims the readings of the day to the children in a way they can more easily understand. The children rejoin their families in church at the beginning of the offertory. Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a great opportunity for the children of our parish to attend Mass with their families while, at the same time, hear the work of God explained in an age appropriate way. If you have any questions, please contact Shari Chmura at (216) 524-1987 or [email protected].

FEBRUARY 2, 2020 PARISH MINISTRIES

CATHOLIC CHARITIES 2020 ANNUAL APPEAL The 2020 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal will take place next weekend in our parish. This year’s appeal theme is Faces of Hope. Your generous support will transform the lives of others, to offer dignity, possibilities and companionship to those who are most vulnerable. As in the past, an in-pew commitment process will take place next weekend, February 8 and 9. All who have not received the mailing from Bishop Perez, or have not had a chance to respond to it, will be asked to consider making a generous pledge to support the ministries and services provided by Catholic Charities. If you have received the mailing, please respond generously to it and we ask you to also complete the in-pew envelope and indicate by checking the box that you have responded by mail. We invite you to view stories of inspiration at CatholicCommunity.org/2020Appeal. To make a donation today, text CCHOPE to 4144 or visit CatholicCommunity.org/Donate.

CATHOLIC MEN’S FELLOWSHIP Hello, men! Welcome! Here is a free offer. Come join us for an hour or two. We meet twice a month. We do not collect dues or record attendance. Instead we talk about life and values. We learn from each other’s experiences. We are excited to read short religious articles. We listen to a song or two (but do not sing along). We are not afraid to pray out loud. We are not holy yet, but maybe you can help improve us. Here is your opportunity to talk or just listen. It is usually the first and third Tuesday nights of every month, from 7:15 to 9:00 p.m. Come join us this Tuesday, February 4th, in the Parish Center. Questions? Please call Ron Snyder at (216) 396-1200.

HOLY LAND GIFTS After all Masses on February 15th and 16th, there will be a display of handmade articles for sale, such as Nativity scenes, crucifixes, rosaries, the Last Supper and many other beautiful religious items. Because of conflict in the region, many Christian families in Bethlehem are struggling to make ends meet. Holy Land Gifts represents over 100 Christian families who make a living by selling traditional olivewood handcrafts and religious articles. When you purchase one of these beautiful gifts, you are helping artisans in the Holy Land provide for their families who live and work with dignity in a region fraught with tension. Thank you for supporting this project to keep the Christians present in the Holy Land.

OUR LADY OF LOURDES SHRINE Owned and operated by The Sisters of the Most Holy Trinity, 21281 Chardon Road, Euclid, Ohio 44117…(216) 481-8232. Annual Lourdes Novena from February 3rd to February 11th. All of us have petitions and needs in our lives, our country, our world. Join us in this Novena. Hope to see you at the Novena! Our Lady of Lourdes Pray for us!

WHEN FAMILY MEMBERS AREADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL

When your family members are admitted to a hospital, please call the rectory office if your loved one is requesting a visit by one of our priests. Our priests visit the sick at University Hospital/Parma Medical Center when they are able. If they are a patient in another area hospital,

let us know. The hospitals no longer notify us when a parishioner is admitted, so the only way we know is if the family calls the Parish Office.
