This is an absolutely easy project.

You need an ink jet printer/ ComputerPopsicle sticksWhite glueCrazy glueBig paper clips (you could use any stiff solid metal w ire instead)USB WIFI, preferably w ith an antenna extension OR a 2.4 GHz devicesoldering iron and leadSanding papersScissorsPliers or preferably a nibbler (see photo below , available at radio shack)a metric ruler w ith millimeters or a metric caliper.

Saarducci (/member/Saarducci/) says:

Okay well I read through the entirepost and I saw many things thatmade a lot of sense, also saw a lot ofunnecessary flaming, but I do have afew comments to make. Right off thebat the one individual that askedabout having his modem in thebasement with a rotating antenna onthe roof needs a reality check.Overlooked in the connecting theUSB dongle to the antenna was thetransmission line length, for thesefrequencies it should be as short aspossible and a multiple of 1/2wavelength I'd suggest as close to2.41 inches as one could manage(use a small diameter 50 ohm coax).Take the dongle apart and connect aUSB extension cable to it and mountit directly on the antenna assembly.Paper clips vs copper, at thisfrequency it's not going to makemuch difference, however thespecific model was generated using14awg copper. Someone said glue itall to cardboard then cover it withmore cardboard actually a strong andstable design, original author saidbuild around popsicle sticks(wooden),both are subject to absorbingmoisture from the air and either canhave a poor dielectric constant, Iwould suggest some kind of plastic(they make popsicles with plasticsticks). The lengths of the elements, the spacing between them, andkeeping them all in the same planeand parallel to each other is the mostimportant consideration. The drivenelement, #2 in this design: that one Iwould make from 14awg copper, I'dmake a simple dipole rather than afolded dipole, I would take twopieces of wire make 90 degree bendsin them cut the bent part to about 1/8inch and attach my transmission line.Take a piece of heat shrink cut twonotches in it about 1/4 inch apart andinsert the wires into it and shrink it,maybe reinforce the space in thecenter (break a tooth from my comband stick it in the middle beforeheating the shrink?) cut it down to thecorrect overall length and insert itlast. If you use the folded dipolemake sure the folded part isperpendicular to the plane of the restof the antenna and use 300 ohm twinlead to connect to the dongle, butyour SWR will probably be muchhigher, reducing your effective gainand possibly resulting in early failureof the dongle. Horizontal vs vertical, after you have your antennaconnected and have connected tosome network you can try rotating itabout its horizontal axis to see if youcan get a better aspect on the otherantenna (more bars). All in all thoughgood job to Biotele, it's cheap, it'seasy, and if done right will provideexcellent results. I did not build this

popefelix (/member/popefelix/) in reply to brian-kn

If you mean just soldering aUSB connector on to thefeedline for this antenna, no,that won't work. You sti l l needsomething to handle theactual generation andreception of the wirelesssignal.

However, if you meanconnecting the antenna to aUSB wireless adaptor, that'spossible, provided you connectthe feedline from the antennato the antenna connector onthe wireless adaptor. If theadaptro doesn't have one, you'd have to tear it apart andfind where the internalantenna was connected.

Biotele (/member/Biotele/) (author) in reply to sololife.sai

Of course, it has to be stiffand solid. I don't think it hasto be exactly a certaindiameter. Maybe someonewith antenna theory canenlighten us further.

Dr.Bill (/member/Dr.Bill/) in reply to Biotele

I think a larger diameter wirewill result in a larger bandwithantenna. For a router with 2 antennas, why not build 2 yagi's and stackthem?A stacked phased array just l ikethe EME array's for moonbounce.

I have a major problems that needssolving quick: how exactly do iconnect the driven element to theantenna? as you can see, the antennaboom is missing the element, becausei popped in my original antenna withthe usb card, and worked fine, but notthe strongest signal. why didnt it workwith the copper wire? because i justtook the 2 wires coming off my board, and put them on each end of theelement, completely skipping theoriginal antenna? how is the wiringdiagram? any help would be greatlyappreciated, as im bored of trying toget around the schools internet fi lter, with this i can mooch off of someoneelses:D

Hey great instructable! It might be a bit off topic but I have a few old disused TV antennas.Could I somehow change those to receiving WIFI? Thanks.

dbartley (/member/dbartley/) says:

Anyone with experience of reflections from the coax itself? I built a 4-element verticallypolarized 850-MHz Yagi antenna. With the coax dangling haphazardly from the boombehind, there seemed to be tremendous problems. These problems seem to disappear bylooping the coax behind from boom to the mast, forming ROUGHLY another half reflector.

dbartley (/member/dbartley/) in reply to dbartley

The ARRL Antenna Book(Chapter 27, 1991) describesthis problem of antennacurrents on the transmissionlines somewhat. The outsideof the coax is actually part ofthe antenna, being directlyattached to an active antennaelement, though it isperpendicular in this region. But also its metal further backinteracts inductively withother antenna elements in itsvicinity. Directing the coaxback along the boom, with alarge loop (about 1.5wavelengths) behind anddown to the wooden mastimproves receptionconsistency somewhat, ratherthan haphazard arrangement. But the ideal loop seems tobe obtained from the tightestpossible. Because of thepeculiar geometry and thelack of actual measurementrather than qualitativeevaluation, it's hard tounderstand why this is.

andrew101 (/member/andrew101/) in reply to frisbeechamp1983

actually if you look at yagiantenna theory, the wire justbehind the driven wire actslike a reflector If you added adish behind the antenna, and the spacing was wrong, you would cause undueinterference for yourself, andchances are it would workagainst you.

a possibil ity would be to addsomething covering the backthat was grounded, it wouldact as a shield tointerference, and not areflector though.

Yes that will work. Can you post a picture that sounds like a great idea.
