News From the Waihi East School Board of Trustees

    September 2013

Activities across the school that have engaged and excited

    children

Room 5 visited the Clares farm. The children got to feedcalves and chickens, and collect eggs. They played with thegoat and dogs and shared a lovely morning tea together.

Discovery continues to develop and is working well. Childrenhave a high level of engagement and are able to directthemselves in activities provided. We have looked at the keycompetencies in relation to our wider topic of reuse, renewand repurpose with many art/science/english/maths andsocial science activities being enjoyed. Children are able tolead their own learning and complete what they start in theirown time (within the morning), often building on theircreations/ideas with minimal input from teachers (whose roleis to facilitate needs not provide teaching steps). If askedmany of the children in the junior school list Discovery in their

top 3 things they like to 'do' at school. Cooking/baking has notbeen happening as it did at the beginning as it can easily betoo adult controlled. This will be addressed in the future bysetting up a system where every child gets to make their ownitem, their way and they get to eat the product.

Jump jam - on some Friday afternoons, several of the juniorclasses have gathered together and learnt to exercise tomusic....lots of fun!

Art: Lots of beautiful artwork is happening in classroomsaround our animal enrichment ideas and zoo visit.

Room 5 have buddy reading daily with the top reading groupfrom Room 2. They are working on asking comprehensivetype questions to gain a better understanding of our stories, and relating them to the world we know. Room 5 also have 2

    5/11

buddy helpers daily for maths. Leaders in Room 2 come andhelp us with our independent activities and teach us how touse/play with some of our maths equipment. This is hugelysuccessful; the older children are on a 2 weekly roster, taking 1

    hour a fortnight each.

Our 7s teams delivered more fantastic results at the ThamesValley event. First in rugby and second in soccer.

Buddy Reading between and within senior classes occurs 1:30pm Tue-Fri.

Electives this term included enterprise, cooking, woodwork, dance, acting, rugby, girls soccer & boot camp.

Large choir led by Steve has been practising every Friday. They performed at Waihis Got Talent at the Beach RSA on the

20th September coming first equal in their section. They areplanning for Term 4 performances, including float parade,New World & school prize giving.

Rooms 1-2 involved in planting at Waitete Stream. Purchased new reading material including CSI reading kit. Robbie has produced some great videos of student activities

see the school website and his class site.

Sumdog maths competition active at the moment we areone of the leading schools.

Wednesday Event: Recently the school choir led by SteveMagyar, went to the Waihi Baptist Churches WednesdayEvent to entertain a group of older folk who meet everysecond Wednesday for fellowship and a meal. The childrenperformed 3 songs and the audience thoroughly appreciatedthe beautiful singing. Our children were great, their songs fromthe late 70s fitted the occasion well. We really appreciate the

    6/11

effort Steve puts into this group. His passion and love of musicis obvious as he enthuses the students.

The kapa haka group was supposed to perform as well. However, through illness and a 7s sports event clash theydidnt go. Instead Lynette took her class (Room 4) of 22students. They took a selection of their reading books withthem which they shared with the old folk after the choir hadperformed. The children were hesitant to get alongside thepeople at first but soon warmed to their invitations to readtheir books. The activity was enjoyed immensely by youngand old alike with stories of olden days schooling shared. The

children were encouraged by all of the positive comments

and were disappointed when it was time to return to school.

There is a possibility that we could arrange for the WednesdayEvent group to visit our school one Wednesday in term 4 for acup of tea and a tour of the classrooms to see what happensat school.

Assemblies: A new initiative this term has been runningcombined assemblies on alternate Thursday afternoons. This

has been hugely successful with sharing of ideas and seniorclasses supporting juniors, presenting a variety of items fromsong & dance to stories and videos of classroom learning. Ithas been a bit tricky working under the covered area andmaintaining appropriate behaviour for a formal occasion, however progress is being made. This has also been a goodplatform for the whole school to learn our school waiata, andto develop the discipline required for formal assemblies.

Shar from ENERGIZE has provided a mountain bikingopportunity at school for a group of seniors. Safety and skillswas the focus. The 12 children who participated wereextremely excited to be part of the programme.

Big breakfast on the 20th of September was hugely successful.Graeme from the Coast Guard was our guest. A large number

participated and enjoyed watching the Americas Cup at the

    same time.

    Reading Together Programme

Reading Together Programme has 11 parents/whanau attending.Comments are very favourable, with a sense of community beingbuilt amongst those attending. Each week sees parentsresponding more freely, and expressing ways they need supportwith reading and their child, and wider issues too. A crche is beingoperated by Alex. Kai and care is provided each week.

    Kapahaka

Whetu is sharing great skills with our tamariki. A note has gonehome to our Kapahaka students seeking permission for children toperform at the Hauraki cultural festival on the 19th of Oct inThames. Hopefully all students will attend.

    Teaching and Learning Programmes

Next term all Teams (groups of classes) will choose their own focusinstead of having a school theme. I would like them to design an

engaging programme that is specific to their needs - anycurriculum area/any focus. I will monitor student engagement andlearning outcomes with the inquiry does this system make adifference? Keeping Ourselves Safe with Constable Brett Otto willtake place in weeks 4-6 next term. This programme gives studentsstrategies if they find themselves in an unsafe situation. A parentinformation meeting will be held on October 29th. Come along andlearn about Keeping Ourselves Safe.

CampEmily has visited Turangi as part of the pre-camp 2014. Ourprogramme is being modified at the moment - three groupsinstead of two which means more action and less waiting time, particularly when abseiling. A significant number of adults haveshown interest in attending. Ten adults will be selected by Phil andRobbie.

    Calf Club Day November 4th

We are all set for an exciting calf club day next term. Alan Scotthas five students with calves at his farm. We are looking into running

a fun day where the whole school participates in some level.

    Practicum

Jude had a wonderful year 2 student teacher in for 6 weeks, two ofwhich were sole charge/in control. Charlotte showed great skillsand went beyond normal duties to support our school eg attendingthe school disco.

    Staffing 2014

Using our new Ministry of Education entitlement for 2014, we will befunded for 8 classroom teachers. I have yet to have conformationabout the Newmont donation. The Board has agreed that if thisdonation is received, they will continue to employ additionalstaffing. There is a possibility of two fixed term appointments to bemade next term, 9 classroom teachers to start the 2014 year.

    Swimming Pool

We aim to have the pool up and running early next term. Whanau

will be able to purchase a pool key for $10. This will allow for afterschool swimming until the end of term. We are also investigatingafter school swimming lessons. The Board will monitor vandalism, and depending on how the pool is used may open the pool up forthe summer holidays.Due to vandalism and people jumping the fence to swim in thepool unsupervised the Board are putting barbed wire around thepool and staff have been asked to monitor the camera over thisarea.

MAD (Make a Difference)A small group of parents have met to discuss our next fundraiser-the Pit Rim Fun Run/Walk. The Fun Run/Walk will be on November2nd. Please spread the word.Rangi Honey, Chairperson of MAD has surveyed parents as to whatthey would like the group to fundraise for. The Board awaitsfeedback on this.
