Helen and Ed Piegza are most recently from New Jersey. They met in 1962, Ed was

an IBM Representative and Helen was an Administrative Assistant to the President and Owner of a glass plant in Port Allegany, Pennsylvania. This year, on September 8th, they will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They have two sons, Edward who is the Founder and President of Classic Journeys LLC, and Mark who is a Co-founder and CFO of US Space LLC. They have three grandsons, Jack, Matthew and Charles, and a granddaughter, Alexandra.

Ed was with IBM for 31 years serving in various management positions. During that time, the family moved four times, living in Portland, Maine, Lexington, Kentucky, and Potomac, Maryland, before retiring in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey in1992. Helen left Allegany Airlines after the birth of their

son Edward in 1966.

Ed and Helen traveled extensively after Ed’s retirement, enjoying the various places that they visited. When it was time to pick a spot to settle down, their hearts told them that Arizona would give them the ideal location to spend six months of the year. After looking over many communities in the North and West Valleys, they chose Sun City Festival in November of 2006 as their location and have been thrilled with their choice ever since. They were totally impressed when they learned of the planned layout of the community, with the friendliness of the Festival Staff as well as the people they met in the community. Helen enjoys walking, hiking and frequently volunteers with various charities in the West Valley, and Ed is President of the Tennis Club, and is a Certified Tennis Professional Instructor. They plan to join the Social Dance Club and want to sing with Desert Harmony in the upcoming year. They really love living in Sun City Festival, enjoy the weather, activities, and most of all the friendships they have made.

Boost Your Brain!

News

We all know regular exercise does great things for the body. Being active keeps the cardiovascular system functioning effectively, maintains strength, produces lean muscle mass, and helps fight osteoporosis. In addition, being physically fit reduces risk factors for Type II diabetes, many forms of cancer, heart disease and other chronic diseases. Equal to, or greater than, the physical benefits of exercise are the benefits to the structure and function of the brain.

Exercise in people of all ages promotes the process of making new brain cells also called neurogenesis. As humans age, the hippocampus, part of the brain

used for forming and storing memory, shrinks in size. In research with mice, time spent running on a wheel showed development of new cells in the hippocampus. In addition, these active mice performed better on simple learning tasks than sedentary cohorts. In humans, the hippocampus has been found to be larger in those who are physically fit. And, exercise has been shown to de-crease the risk for dementia and even slow its progress.

Beyond just neurogenesis, exercise boosts the brain’s neurotrophic factors. Neurotrophic factors are small proteins which promote the growth and survival of brain cells. Research has shown exercise causes the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF) which, in turn lead to enhanced memory and learning. Research also shows a genetic link to BDNF. This may lead some people to get greater or lesser release of BDNF and see more or less benefit from it.

Just as exercise boosts the body’s endurance, it also boosts the brain’s endurance. In response to cardiovascular exercise, the body’s cells create additional “powerhouses” called mitochondria. This process is not limited to working muscles. The brain’s cells also create more mitochondria. As a result, the brain’s ability to operate at peak levels may be extended to a greater period of time across the day.

A habit of regular exercise will build not just the body, but also the brain. Keep moving and keep thinking.
