BACK-TO-BACK CCSA CHAMPIONS • SIX NCAA/AVCA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES

MATCH #1: NO. 1 PEPPERDINE

MATCH #2: NO. 3 HAWAI’I

SCOUTING THE WAVES » Pepperdine enters Week #2 as the top-ranked team in both the AVCA and DiG polls. This

is the Waves’ 14th time ranked as No. 1. The Waves and the Seminoles are two of only five teams to be ranked in every AVCA Poll.

» Pepperdine started off the season with a loss to Cal Poly at the Grand Canyon Tourna-ment, but bounced back last week to pick up a pair of wins over No. 1 USC and split matches with UCLA to jump up in the rankings.

» The team’s No. 4 pairing of Skylar Caputo and Alexis Filippone picked up both the AVCA and VolleyMob weekly honors -- they are the Waves’ only pair with an untarnished 7-0 record.

» The Waves graduated a number of top players after the 2017 season, including AVCA All-American Delaney Knudsen and USAV Collegiate Beach Pairs Championship bronze medalist Brittany Howard.

» So far this season, the Waves have gone 3-4 at the No. 1 position, 5-2 at No. 2, 5-2 at No. 3, 7-0 at No. 4 and 2-5 at No. 5.

» After seven seasons and two AVCA Championships with Pepperdine beach volleyball, head coach Nina Matthies will retire following the 2018 season.

SERIES RECORD » Pepperdine leads 7-1 in the series against Florida State.

» FSU’s only win against the Waves was last season in Tallahassee, where the Seminoles earned their 26th straight win at home. The Waves retaliated just a day later to snap that streak and hand FSU its only loss on its home courts.

SCOUTING THE RAINBOW WAHINE » Hawai’i opened the season with a pair of wins against No. 3 UCLA and No. 17 Stanford,

sweeping the Bruins 5-0. Since then, the team has gone 2-2, defeating Stanford and Loyola Marymount, and falling to UCLA twice.

» So far this season, the team has gone 3-3 at the No. 1 position, 4-2 at No. 2, 5-1 at No. 3, 2-4 at No. 4 and 4-2 at No. 5.

» The Seminoles have defeated the Rainbow Wahine twice under head coach Brooke Niles, once at the NCAA Championships in 2016 and once in Honolulu - both decided in five sets.

SERIES RECORD » Florida State leads 5-4 in the series against the Rainbow Wahine.

» The last time the two teams met, Hawai’i knocked Florida State out of the NCAA Cham-pionships last season.

2018 FLORIDA STATE BEACH VOLLEYBALL MATCH NOTES

MATCH #3: NO. 4 UCLA

MATCH #4: NO. 2 SOUTHERN CAL

SCOUTING THE BRUINS » UCLA is coming off of a big weekend at home, defeating No. 3 Hawai’i and No. 17 LMU in

a pair of midweek single-dual matches.

» The Bruins currently have a 7-3 record in 2018 with wins over Hawai’i, Pepperdine, USC and LMU.

» The team is coming off of its best season to date in 2017, where the Bruins won a school-record 30 dual matches, earned a school record 24 straight dual victories, and took their first win over No. 1 USC in program history.

» Juniors Megan and Nicole McNamara return as two-time AVCA Beach All-Americans, becoming UCLA’s second and third recipients of the award. The pair has gone 4-4 at the No. 1 position so far this season

» Last season the Bruins graduated beach and indoor star Jordan Anderson and the pro-gram’s first beach-only athlete, Kamila Tan. Anderson now plays for Washington’s beach program as a graduate transfer.

SERIES RECORD » Florida State holds a 6-2 all-time record over UCLA.

» The last time the two teams met, the Seminoles knocked the Bruins out of the NCAA Championships last season for a fifth place finish.

SCOUTING THE WOMEN OF TROY » The Seminoles will face the three-time defending national champions only once this

season, taking on No. 2 USC in the final match of the East Meets West Challenge.

» USC’s 5-3 record this season includes wins over Arizona State, Nebraska, Cal Poly and UCLA, but it was a streak of losses to the Bruins and two losses to Pepperdine that knocked the team out of the No. 1 spot.

» The Women of Troy graduated a number of notable players last season, including Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes, who most recently became the youngest team to ever win an AVP tournament. The two were part of a five-member senior class with four All-Ameri-cans.

» Notable quote: “Florida State is the UCLA, Pepperdine [and] USC of the east coast,” - USC head coach Anna Collier.

SERIES RECORD » USC leads 3-7 in the series against Florida State.

» The ten meetings in the series is the most FSU has with any team at the East Meets West Challenge.

» The Women of Troy are on a five-match win streak against the Seminoles, all of which have come in the past two seasons, and all of which have been at neutral sites.

BACK-TO-BACK CCSA CHAMPIONS • SIX NCAA/AVCA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES

Entering her third season with the program, head coach Brooke Niles has shaped Florida State beach volleyball into one of the most elite teams in the country, establishing the Seminoles as a national contender every year and a fixture in the AVCA Beach Top-20. Niles came to FSU prior to the 2016 season, and had previously coached at the collegiate, junior college, club and high school levels working with both indoor and sand volleyball teams. In 2016, Niles led the Seminoles to unprecedented heights during the pro-gram’s first season as an official NCAA Championship sport. Her first year in Tal-lahassee was highlighted by a series of program firsts including a school-record for dual-match victories (32), a conference championship, the top-seed in the inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship and a national runner-up finish.

Florida State hit the ground running under Niles, winning its first 14 matches, all on the road, with eight of those victories coming against ranked foes including five ranked in the top-10. One of those wins came against then-No. 2 Southern California in Los Angeles as the Seminoles snapped the Women of Troy’s 19-match home win streak. FSU went on to earn the No. 1 overall seed at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship after claiming the 2016 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Conference title. The Seminoles finished the 2016 campaign as the national runner-up at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala. after posting a 3-2 record at the tournament. FSU went on to set the single-season school record for victories in a season with 32 and ranked in the Top 5 of the AVCA national poll all year. Along with their 14-match win streak, the Seminoles also put together a school-record 17-match win streak which saw Florida State outscore the opposition 71-10. At season’s end, Florida State registered 19 victories over ranked schools, while posting an 11-3 mark against teams ranked in the Top 10. In her second year under the helm Niles continued the winning tradition of Florida State beach volleyball. The team finished with the second-most wins in school history and the third most in the country (29). Niles and the Noles secured back-to-back CCSA Championships after they defeated FIU 3-0 in 34 minutes. Florida State reached their second consecutive NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship appearance and sixth straight post season appearance, tied for most of any school. The Seminoles finished the 2017 season in fourth place at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shore, Ala. after going 2-2 at the tournament. The Noles defeated a school record 22 ranked teams during the 2017 season, including 13 wins over top-10 teams and three over top-5 teams. The 2017 season saw the Garnet and Gold defeat Pepperdine for the first time in school history as they took down the second-ranked wave in Tallahassee. Under Niles, Florida State garnered two AVCA All-Americans, six CCSA All-Conference selections, a league-best three student-athletes named to the CCSA All-Academic team in 2016, the CCSA Scholar Athlete of the Year (Macy Jerger) in 2017, the CCSA Pair of the Year in 2016 (Julie Brown/Jace Pardon) and 10 Seminoles who earned a spot on the CCSA Academic Honor Roll. Niles was recognized for her outstanding effort in her first season at the helm of the Seminole beach volleyball program as she was named National Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
