SEVEN TO BE INDUCTED AT HALL OF FAME’S 32ndANNIVERSARY ON NOV. 18

Seven EHHS graduates will be inducted into the 32nd Annual East Haven High School Alumni Association

Hall of Fame on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2018 at Seasons, 980 Foxon Rd., East Haven (formerly Country House

Restaurant). Slated for induction are: Tim Whelan '72, William Parker '77, Vincent DeNuzzo '96, David

Bachinski '97, Jennifer Lucatino McCabe '04, William Paulson '04 and Natalie Crosby '07.

In 2017, Tim Whelan, Class of 1972, retired as vice president of Sunrise Senior Living

in McClean, Va., where he worked for nearly seven years. At Sunrise, a 300-property

senior living business, he managed senior dining and nutrition service programs

for 30,000 residents, establishing improved systems for purchasing, automated

recipe and menu development, production planning and training. This capped

a distinguished career in the food service hospitality industry, including 22 years with

Caterair International/Marriott Corporation, which provided inflight meals for passen-

gers on large commuter aircraft, and several multiunit retail organizations. In Bethesda,

Maryland, he was vice president of Prepared Foods and Produce for Balducci’s, a part-

ner in Marvelous Market, and senior director of Prepared Foods and Commissary Oper-

ations at Fresh Field/Whole Foods Market. He also served as vice president of Oasis

Market in Minneapolis, Minn. After his graduation from East Haven High School, where he lettered in football, Tim

attended Roger Williams College, Bristol, R.I., earning a bachelor’s degree in Urban and Environmental Planning in

1977. Since 2000, he has served as a counselor with First Tee Delaware, part of an international organization that

introduces young people to golf.

William Parker Jr., Class of 1977, was a three-sport athlete for the Easties. He was

named to the All-Housatonic football squad and was recognized by the New Haven

Gridiron Club as the most outstanding high school player in Greater New Haven.

Additionally, the New Haven-area Yale Club named him the area’s MVP. He com-

peted in both basketball and track during his high school career and also excelled

academically. He was named a State of Connecticut Scholar and a Football Founda-

tion Scholar-Athlete and received both the Harvard Book Award and the DAR

Award. He graduated from Yale University with a bachelor’s degree in Administra-

tive Science. He played freshman football for the Elis, but suffered a career-ending

injury in his sophomore year. Early in his career, Bill worked in banking. Since the

early 90s, he has been in telecommunications, working for such companies as

AT&T and SBC/SNET. He founded and is co-owner of Tricom Systems, Inc., a

technology company, at which he has been at the helm for the past 16 years. (Continued on Page 2)

Vincent A. DeNuzzo, Class of 1996, was president of the Faculty-Student Senate.

He was a four-year member of the basketball team, captaining the squad in his sen-

ior year, during which he averaged 13.9 points per game. He held the school record

for three-pointers (44) in a season until 2004. Vinny attended SCSU, earning bache-

lor’s and master’s degrees and a 6th year degree in Educational Leadership and Poli-

cy Study. He was inducted into SCSU’s chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the National

History Honor Society. He began his teaching career as a Social Studies teacher at

EHHS, later becoming instructional leader of that department. He was named the

school’s principal in 2012. He served on the ACES’ Social Studies Council (2007-

2012). Throughout his career in education, he stayed involved in sports. He was

EHHS’ assistant boys’ basketball coach, girls’ tennis coach, cross-county coach and

girls’ basketball coach. He led the girls’ basketball squad to the 2006-2007 Southern

Connecticut Conference Oronoque Division Championship, the first division cham-

pionship in the program’s history, and was named New Haven Register 2007 High School Girls Basketball Ar-

ea Coach of the Year. He is a certified varsity basketball official and has served on the Sal Tinari Biddy Basket-

ball League Board of Directors since 1997. He is president of the Southern Connecticut Conference and a youth

basketball coach in North Haven. He also served as director of the East Haven Yellowjacket Basketball Camp

(2003-2008).

David Bachinski, Class of 1997, played varsity hockey at EHHS. During his fresh-

man year, when the squad was Housatonic champions and reached the state title

game, Dave recorded 41 points. As a sophomore, he scored 54 points, and the team

again topped the Housatonic league and went on the state title match. He was nomi-

nated to the All-Area hockey team and was honorable mention for the All-State team.

As a junior, he was named to the All-State team, where he recorded 71 points; and

the team was the SCC champions, reaching the state title match. As a senior, he again

was named to All-State. He scored 83 points, and the Easties were again SCC

champs and reached the state title match. That year, he was nominated All-Area and

All-SCC and was named to the All-State first team. He finished his career with 249

points. He holds the school record with 147 assists. He graduated from Berkshire Pre-

paratory School, Sheffield, Mass., where he led the hockey team in points. For the

last 15 years, he has worked for Stop & Shop’s corporate offices, where he is current-

ly assistant manager of Operations for all the company’s stores.

Jennifer Lucatino McCabe, Class of 2004, distinguished herself in both soccer and indoor and outdoor

track. She lettered for four years on the soccer team, was co-captain her senior year, and

was named All-Hammonasset in 2002 and 2003. She lettered four years in track, where

her events were 55-meter, 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles; long jump; and triple jump.

She co-captained the track team in her senior year. She held several EHHS records. In

soccer, she scored the most goals in a season (11); most assists in a season (9); most ca-

reer goals (25) and most career points (59). In indoor track, she set records for the 55-

meter hurdles (8.9 seconds) and long jump (15' 6.5"). Her awards include the 2003-2004

CIAC Scholar-Athlete Award and the 2003 John “Whitey” Puriek Award as Outstand-

ing Female Soccer Player. Albertus Magnus College offered her a scholarship to play

soccer, but she elected to enter UConn’s School of Engineering, graduating with a bach-

elor’s in Chemical Engineering. She then worked as a systems engineer at United Tech-

nologies for three years, during which time she also earned an MBA from UConn. In

2011, she joined Medtronic, where she currently works as a research and development

engineer. Jennifer volunteers in local public schools, where she mentors young students

in STEM. She also is an active volunteer with the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and Habitat for Humanity. Jen-

nifer is married to Matthew McCabe. They are proud parents to a son, Chase. (Continued on Page 3)

EASTIES CAPTURE STATE CLASS M CHAMPIONSHIP

The East Haven High School Girls Basketball Team defeated Career High School 49-47 to win the Connecticut

Class M State Championship. The team, coached by Anthony Russell '95, finished the season with a record of 24

and 3. Kylie Schlottman, daughter of Keith Schlottman and Kim Jones Schlottman '92 and granddaughter of

Ralph and Shirley Riccio Schlottman '57/'59; and Makenzie Helms, daughter of Lance Helms '88; were

named to the All-SCC First Team, the New Haven Register All-Area Team, the Register’s All-State Team, the

Connecticut High School Coaches Association All-State Class M Team, the New Haven Tap-Off Club’s All Ar-

ea Team, and the USA Today All-USA Connecticut Team. Sophomore Alexis Pendziwater, daughter of Ursula

DeMartino Pendziwater’89/granddaughter of Norman DeMartino ’66, was named All-SCC Second Team.

William Paulson, Class of 2004, distinguished himself on the gridiron, the baseball dia-

mond, the basketball court and in the military. In football, he was a four-year starter, serv-

ing as quarterback, running back, wide receiver, defensive back, punter and kicker. He was

named to the Levi Jackson Gridiron Team and a New Haven Register “Player of the

Week” three times; twice to the All-SCC Hammonasset Division Team; once as WELI’s

“Defensive Player of the Game,” as East Haven Courier’s “Sports Person of the Year,”

and to the Class M All-State squad. He scored 242 career all-purpose points. He also was a

four-year starter for baseball, where he pitched and played the outfield. He was named to

the SCC All-Hammonasset Team and the New Haven Register’s All-Time Area Team. In

2002, the team was Division Champion and the State Champion runner-up. Bill also was a

varsity basketball starter for two years. He later attended the University of Connecticut on

a baseball athletic scholarship. His work history includes electrician, architectural drafter

and private security contractor. He served in the United States Marine Corps for five years,

including an eight-month combat tour as a squad leader in Afghanistan. He received sever-

al awards during his military service, including the Navy Unit Commendation Medal and

the Navy Achievement Medal. He continues to serve his country and his community by volunteering his time with

fellow veterans.

Natalie Crosby, Class of 2007, was a standout in volleyball and softball. As a

freshman, she was a varsity volleyball starter. In her a sophomore, junior and senior

years, she was named to the New Haven Register’s All-Area and the Southern Con-

necticut Conference’s All-Oronoque squads. As both a junior and senior, she was

named to the Connecticut High School Coaches’ Association All-State Team. She

appeared in the Senior All-State Game. Natalie finished her senior year with 270

kills. In her high school career, she topped over 900 kills and 500 digs. In softball,

she started varsity as a freshman and sophomore. She was on the Southern Connecti-

cut Conference All-Oronoque Team as a junior and senior. In her senior year, she

batted .467 and had 18 RBIs, six doubles, three triples and two homers. Her career

batting average was .375, with 85 career hits, and she was named All State as a sen-

ior. She attended Western Connecticut State University (WCSU), where she played

volleyball. As a freshman, she was named to the All-Conference First Team and the

Little East Conference “Rookie of the Year,” only the third WCSU player to achieve

that honor. She was All-Conference Second Team 2008 to 2010. As a senior, she

captained the squad and was named to the All-New England Team. Her career

achievements include 1,138 kills, 161 aces and 924 digs. After college, she was head

junior varsity coach at John Jay High School, Cross River, N.Y., leading the team to a

14-1 record. The following year, she was named assistant freshmen volleyball coach at Westhill High School in

Stamford. That team also finished 14-1. She is employed by the New Haven Police Department.

2017 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS NOW PURSUING POST-SECONDARY DEGREES

FOUR RECEIVE ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIPS

Joseph Castellano, son of Joseph Castellano '77, was a member of the National

Honor Society, and editor-in-chief of The Comet. Joseph lettered in three sports and

was captain of both the cross-country and indoor/outdoor track teams. He received the

SCC All-Academic Team Award, Princeton Book Award, Rensselaer Medal, SCC

Scholar Leader Award and Outstanding Performance in Principles of Engineering, and

Chemistry. Ranking third in his graduating class, he is attending the University of

Connecticut (UConn), where he will major in computer or biomedical engineering.

Anthony Luzzi, son of Salvatore Luzzi '79, lettered in football; received the Trinity

Book Award; and was a member of the Science Media and Creative Clubs. He ranked

sixth in his class and is attending UConn, where he is majoring in biochemistry.

Frank Camera, son of Alphonse Camera '87, and grandson of Madelyn Spadacenta Camera '64, was a four-

year member of the basketball and baseball teams. Frank was named a Scholar/Athlete by the New Haven Tap-

Off Club and the CIAC. He also was a member of the National Honor Society, Math League and class treasurer.

He received the St. Michael’s Book Award and Business Math Award. Ranked 14th in his class, he is attending

Fairfield University and majoring in accounting.

Debora Carpanzano, daughter of Rose Bonesse Carpanzano '93, was a member of the National Honor Socie-

ty, Yearbook Committee, Science Club, SADD, and HOSA. Debora received the CT COLT Award for Excel-

lence and lettered in soccer, cross-country, and track and field. She ranked 22nd in her class and is attending

Quinnipiac University.

ACQUARULO SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO SEAN VALLIE

Sean Vallie was the recipient of the Acquarulo Family Scholarship. Sean received the Xerox Award and the

South Central Area Superintendent’s Association Award. During the summer, he served as an umpire in the

Momauguin Little League, was a religious education assistant at St. Clare’s Church, and was an audio engineer

for the East Haven Arts Commission. He ranked 29th in his graduating class and is attending the University of

New Haven, where he is majoring in mechanical engineering.

SPANO RECEIVED CRISCUOLO SCHOLARSHIP

Ryan Spano, son of Elizabeth Franco Spano '79, received the Criscuolo Family Scholarship. During his high

school years, Ryan served with the Special Olympics, was a volunteer coach in the Sal Tinari Biddy Basketball

League, participated in the CCD Midnight Run, and was a member of the Mathematics Club. A four-year letter

winner in basketball and baseball, he served as captain of both squads. He ranked in the upper 30 percent of his

graduating class and is attending the University of New Haven, where he is majoring in civil engineering,

REID AND COYLE AWARDED DiLUNGO FAMILY SCHOLARSHIPS

Jessica Reid was a four-year member of the soccer team and a member of the National Honor Society, SADD,

HOBY, and the SCC All-Academic Team. She was a student representative on the Board of Education, was

named East Haven Courier “Sports Person of the Week,” and received the Mt. Holyoke Book Award. Ranked

fifth in her graduating class, she is attending UConn. (Continued on Page 5)

Olivia Coyle, daughter of Patty Russo Coyle '89, was a four-year member of the basketball team and a

member of the LSAB Club. She was ranked among the top 20 percent of her graduating class and is at-

tending Pace University, where she is majoring in finance.

HERARD RECEIVES PITE AWARD

Marley Herard received the Edward and Sara Pite Memorial Scholarship. She lettered in soccer and

basketball, was a member of the National Honor Society, and served on the Prom and Homecoming

Committees. She was class secretary; a member of the Yearbook Club; a recipient of the Wells College

Book Award; and was named a New Haven Tap-Off Club Scholar/Athlete and a member of the SCC All-

Academic Team. She ranked 10th in her graduating class and is attending Providence College.

SCHLOTTMAN AWARDED NARRACCI SCHOLARSHIP

Kylie Schlottman, daughter of Keith and Kim Jones Schlottman '92 and granddaughter of Ralph and

Shirley Riccio Schlottman '57/'59, received the Stephen Narracci Scholar/Athlete Scholarship. Kylie is

a three-time member of the All-State Basketball Team and a two-time member of the All-State Volley-

ball Team. She set several school scoring records, including a career mark of 1,693 points in basketball.

She was a member of the National Honor Society, vice president of the senior class and president of HO-

SA. She ranked 19th in her graduating class and is attending the University of New Haven.

MOSCATO AND LONGLEY RECEIVE VITALE SCHOLARSHIPS

Michael Moscato and Gabriel Longley were the recipients of the Albert and Teresa Parlato Vitale

Scholarship.

Michael Moscato was a letter-winner in golf and hockey, volunteered in the St. Andrew’s Child Care

Center clean-up, and assisted senior citizens with yardwork. He is attending the Porter and Chester Insti-

tute of Branford, where he is studying the electrical trade.

Gabriel Longley lettered in basketball and baseball and was a senior day volunteer, athletic depart-

ment statistics and video recorder. He also was a physical education intern at Momauguin School. He is

attending Eastern Connecticut State University, where he is majoring in Physical/Health Education.

WARNER SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO MAKENZIE FIORILLO

Makenzie Fiorillo, daughter of Joseph and Toni Aitro Onorato '91, received the Robert and Frances

Healy Warner Scholarship. Makenzie was member of the National Honor Society and served as an Envi-

sion and National Youth Leadership Ambassador. She also was a Youth Leadership mentor and president

of Student Government. She ranked in the top 20 of her graduating class and is attending UConn, where

she is majoring in Nursing.

Dr. Peter Barile '61 was named professor emeritus for SCSU and

the Connecticut State University System.

Ken McKay '69 was named East Haven Courier “Person of the

Week” in January. Ken has served on the East Haven Town Council for

last 20 years and is its current chair.

Robert Consolatore '74 was named East Haven Courier “Person of

the Week” in January.

Albert Carfora '76 was named “Official of the Year” by the New Haven Tap-Off Club.

John Goodwin '79 works for Moroso Performance Products, Inc.

Noreen Brereton Clough '79 was named East Haven Courier “Person of the Week” in February.

Noreen is a lifelong resident of East Haven and serves on the Town’s Board of Finance.

Michael Miranda, M.D. '79 is the director of Orthopedic Trauma at Hartford Hospital.

Bob Guarino '79 is the senior manager of Product Mandates at Blue Shield of California.

Jenna Pane '19, daughter of Louis Pane '81, was named to the All-SCC Tennis Team.

Michael Narracci '81, coordinating director of Boston Red Sox Baseball for NESN, was awarded his

sixth Emmy by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for live directing in May.

Tom Falco '82 is the new general manager of the Hilton Garden Inn, Miramar , Fla.

Alyson Narracci, daughter of Steve Narracci '83, was named MVP in the New England Prep

School Athletic Association Class B Basketball Tournament, as the Promfet School defeated Wilbraham

Northhampton School in the finals.

Eileen Parlato '83, EHFD battalion chief, received the East Haven Rotary’s Joseph Buonome Me-

morial Safety Award in June and was named East Haven Courier “Person of the Week” in July.

Louis Lefevre '84, basketball coach at Tipton (Indiana) High School, won his 500th game. Currently,

Lou is among the state’s top 10 active coaches in career wins and has the highest career won percentage

(76%) of all active coaches in the state.

James Oca '85, EHFD battalion chief, was among eight firefighters honored by the Exchange Club

of Branford at the organization’s “Honor Our Shoreline Heroes” banquet in May.

Kevin Lawlor '86 was named deputy chief State’s attorney in July.

Alphonse Camera '87, an ar t teacher at Joseph Melillo Middle School, was recognized as East

Haven’s 2018 Grade 6 to 8 Level “Teacher of the Year.”

Lori Butler '89, president of the East Haven Yellowjacket Club, was named East Haven Courier

“Sports Person of the Week” in January.

Lisa Geraci-Anastasio '92, a member of the East Haven Board of Education, was named East Haven

Courier “Person of the Week” in January.

Ashley Harkins '08 received her doctorate in Nursing Practice from Fairfield University in May 2017.

Kevin Glenn '97 was appointed deputy police chief in Nor th Haven on July 2. He was a police captain,

commanding officer of the South Central Regional SWAT Team, and Public Information officer.

Destiny Coward '14 was named “Most Outstanding Field Performer” of the Nor theast 10 Track and

Field Championships in February. She claimed the titles in the shotput (13.67m) and the weight throw

(20.25m). Her mark in shotput was a NCAA provisional qualifying mark, and her mark in the weight throw was

a NCAA automatic qualifying mark. She was also named Northeast-10 Conference “Indoor Field Athlete of the

Year” and was the Division II National Champion in the weight throw.

John Kikosicki '15 was named East Haven Courier “Spor ts Person of the Week” in November 2017.

John is a coach with the East Haven Youth football program.

Trevor Angelo '16 was named East Haven Courier “Spor ts Person of the Week” in November 2017. Tre-

vor is a volunteer coach in the East Haven Youth Football program.

Allison Luzzi '16, a sophomore at the University of Bridgeport, was named to the All-ECC Team. She bat-

ted .382 and led her team this past season with hits (60), triples (4) and homeruns (11).

Miranda Gladwin '16, a sophomore at ECSU major ing in spor t and leisure management, is also a mem-

ber of the basketball team.

Emily Maffeo '16, a sophomore at SCSU, was a member of the 4-X-400 relay Northeast 10 Champs in Feb-

ruary.

Vincenzo Camera '17, a freshman pitcher at Westfield State University, was named “Rookie of the

Week” after pitching seven innings, during which he allowed just three hits, in a win over top-ranked UMass

Boston in March.

Ryan Spano '18 played in the Connecticut High School Coaches Association’s Senior All-Star baseball

game.

IN RETROSPECT

1955 - The swim team, captained by Frank Keefe, won the District League Champi-

onship for the first time.

1961 - Francis F. Villa Jr. was named New Haven Register “Youth of the Year.”

1963 – Marilyn Volpe received the Connecticut Association of Women’s Dean’s

Award.

1964 - Dennis Anderson received the Harvard Book Award; Don Dempsey was

named to the All-Housatonic Basketball Team.

1970 - Bob Migliaro and George Rose were named to the All-Housatonic Football

Team; Doug Chapin and Jacqueline Gagnon received the All-Around Boy & Girl

Awards; the Easties won the Housatonic League Baseball Championship.

1973 - James Lyon was named to the All-Housatonic Track Team; David Ermer received the Harvard

Book Award.

1976 -Michael Esposito was named to the All-Housatonic Cross Country Team; Jim McConnell and

Lou Pellegrino were named to the All-Housatonic Swim Team.

1980 - Lee Schatzlein was named to the All-Housatonic Basketball Team. The Pioneer yearbook was

dedicated to English teacher Teresa Parlato Vitale, Class of '54.

1985 - Liz D’Angelo and Shawn Danielson were named to the All-Housatonic Softball Team; Scott

Mitchell was named a scholar-athlete by the New Haven Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

1988 - David Coulombe was named to the All-Housatonic Golf Team.

1998 - John Pellegrino was named to the All-State Hockey Team.

2004 - Rob Coates was the State Decathlon Champion.

2009 – Tom Ayala was named to the All-State Wrestling Team at 130

pounds.
