The Gift of Time – One More Year until Kindergarten

Kindergarten has changed since its inception more than 60 years ago. Originally, kindergarten was simply a pro-gram for young children to learn social-ization skills. Today’s kindergarteners, however, are expected to be advanced both socially and academically.

Therefore, it is important to make certain that your child is ready for his kindergarten experience. Readiness for kindergarten isn’t only predicated on a child’s aptitude; there are many factors to consider. Here are a few:

• Interest in Learning• Strong Oral Skills• Listening Skills• Independence • Social Skills• Strong Fine Motor Skills• Basic Academic SkillsI encourage you to visit a few kindergarten classes,

both at public and private schools, and envision your child in those situations. Ask yourself these questions as you are visiting in the classrooms:

-Does my child look forward to learning new things and can he sit for 15 minutes to listen to stories?

-Can he articulate his thoughts and engage in class-room discussion without getting frustrated?

-Is she capable of putting away and retrieving her belongings, going to the restroom, and managing social relationships?

-Is she able to hold a pencil properly and write with-out discomfort?

-Does he know the primary colors, recognize the alphabet, and basic family information such as parent names, phone number, and home address?

While these questions will help guide you in this process, remember to involve your child’s preschool teacher by asking for their insight and opinion about whether your child is ready for kindergarten. Most importantly, you know your child best. It is ultimately your choice whether your child should advance to kindergarten or receive the gift of an extra year.

Camp Billi Marcus, held at Temple Kol Emeth, offers large, inviting classrooms and exciting, age-appropriate playgrounds.
