Jack Miffleton

Jack Miffleton is a teacher and

musician. his songs are sung in classrooms and churches

around the world. he was

editor of OcP’s “Today’s liturgy

with children.” he teaches

music at saint Jarlath’s school

in Oakland, california, is

married, and has a grown son.

walking hand-in-hand with her four-year-old son into church for Mass, a young mother whispered, “i want you to behave today and sit quietly. do you know why you should be quiet in church?” “yes,” replied the boy, “because people are sleeping.”

it has been four decades since the Directory for Masses with Children (dMc) addressed the needs of children at Mass and set in motion a new dynamic between catechesis and liturgy. so what can be said today about children at Mass? Parents, priests, educators, developmental psy-chologists, and liturgists have all weighed in on the subject with diverse opinions. Each offers a unique perspective. it is generally agreed that children present special challenges when at-tending what is essentially an adult service, but it is their right because of Baptism. Moreover, the witness of adult believers can make a lasting impression on the children. in turn adults can benefit spiritually from the presence of children in the christian community (dMc 16).

Two Churches, Two Modelsi split my music-making ministry between

an inner city church with a small school that is largely hispanic and a suburban church that has a large parish school with an additional thousand children attending its afternoon religious edu-cation programs. at the spanish Masses in the latino parish, parents would be appalled at the idea of separating the children from the adults at Mass. There is a certain tolerance for children crying, talking, and walking about that i do not experience in the suburban church. however, the larger suburban parish offers a wide variety of well-prepared options for the children and parents. some might favor the model offered in this particular latino parish because at least theoretically it draws God’s people together as one and no one is sleeping except a few infants. Others might favor the developmental model

because it considers a child’s mental and physi-cal readiness for adult ritual. in both models children witness a joyful community celebrating the mystery of christ.

Preparing and Encouraging Children to Participate at Mass

as worshippers have become more comfort-able with the new Roman Missal with its prom-ise of a renewed liturgical spirituality, perhaps it is time to take a fresh look at the dMc, a land-mark document on children at worship, and its principles for introducing the Eucharist to pre-adolescent children and helping them “readily and joyfully encounter christ together in the Eucharistic celebration and to stand with him in the presence of the Father” (dMc 55).

The dMc is a document that rests firmly on the shoulders of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy and was prepared as a supplement to the 1969 General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GiRM). it is unique among church documents for it attempts to bridge the pedagogical and emo-tional needs of children with the canonical and theological requirements of the church. Many of the adaptations suggested for the Mass in the dMc apply to Masses when children are in the majority and not to a normative sunday Eucha-rist, yet with child-centered clarity the document can remind the adult church what is important for the celebration of every Eucharist and especially those Masses with children present.

Below are some suggestions for priests, mu-sicians, parents, and catechists that may help in preparing for the presence of children at sun-day Mass.

The Priest Celebrant“no other single factor affects the liturgy as

much as the attitude, style, and bearing of the priest celebrant” (Sing to the Lord 18, cf. dMc 23). Many parishes have a large number of children

CHORALhymn to the holy spirit (doherty/Bekakos) OcP 30109501

God in Trinity (wright) OcP 20921spirit of God (leBlanc/dudley-smith) OcP 4614

different people seem to reveal different parts of the Trinity to us. some people are totally spirit-directed. Oth-ers are ardent followers of Jesus, following in his footsteps, living and dying for others. There are those, too, who are connected and fascinated with the creator. Often artists and musicians, those in awe of the creative process, are in this group.

The holy spirit, who is leading the church in ways we may not understand, is leading us to our future, not by marching forward, but as in a dance, says australia’s Good samaritan sister Verna holyhead in Welcoming the Word in Year C: With Burning Hearts (collegeville: liturgical Press, 2006). “Theology has developed a word to describe the dynamic relationship between the Persons of the Trinity and the community of believers—perichoresis, or ‘dance.’

…The Trinity is a partnership of encircling and embracing, a graceful movement of loving attentiveness into which we are invited as partners who must, in our turn, draw others into the dance by our loving outreach to them. with the imagery of the dance we cannot think of God as solitary” (p. 84).

she also calls the Trinity “a community of wisdom-filled, love-oriented, and spirit-led communion” and claims that each of today’s readings speaks to an aspect of this com-munion (p. 83).

Many of today’s music suggestions have Trinitarian verses. The cosmic verses of “Farther Than the Farthest sun” are an attractive match for today’s cosmic responsorial psalm. — Elaine Rendler-McQueeney
