Quilt Elements, NEW from Judy Hopkins

The Flying Geese block has long been a favorite of quilters, and often is made from small pieces of fabric from the scrap bag. In this design, the geese fly north and south, flanking another simple traditional block called Economy Patch.

Quilters have traditionally arranged squares, rectangles and triangles into blocks and named the resulting designs for familiar things or ideas. The Eskimo Mask block is an abstract representation of ceremonial masks that were typically made from driftwood, animal skins, bone and/or ivory.

Cabin Lights is a counterchange block, with equal amounts of light and dark in equal sizes and shapes. In this jewelry design, the block is set “on point” on a counterchange background. Quilters know that positive-negative designs like this one work especially well for two-fabric quilts and for scrappy quilts.

Caribou are found in the Northern Regions of North America. As summer nears, caribou herds head north in one of the world’s great large-animalmigrations. Herds may travel more than 600 miles (965 kilometers) along well trod annual routes. The male and sometimes the female caribou carryantlers, shedding them annually as winter calls.

The small Alaskan Island that I call home is too small to sustain a mature bear. So, I was as surprised as the large Brown Bear that I came upon dig-ging through storm tossed kelp on the back beach. This piece depicts the bear as he looked up and “smiled” at me, before turning and running into the forest.

Barry Burger is an accomplished jewelry artist residing in the forests of Northern Idaho. Mr. Burger’s designs were inspired while living and hiking the vast northern region of Alaska.

Along the island that sits in the outside waters of Sitka Sound, where the artist lives, whales travel the Southeast Alaska waters. A humpback whale’s dis-play of its flukes inspired Alaska Whale Night, available as a bracelet, pendant, pin, and earrings.

The Inukshuk is a common feature of the Arctic Region and means “likeness of a person” in the Inuit language. The Inukshuk is made of stacked rocks and embodies the spirit of the Inuit. Unukshuik (plural) can be created to show directions to travelers, to warn of impending danger, to mark a place of respect, or to act as helpers in the hunting of caribou. The Inuit (meaning “people”) are related Northern Indian tribes living in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Siberia.

Along the island that sits in the outside waters of Sitka Sound, where the artist lives, whales travel the Southeast Alaska waters. The patterns featured inNarrow Whale I & II represent the flukes (tail) of the humpback whale. The humpback whales of Alaska spend the summers here to feed and travel to Hawaii in winter to birth their young.
