The MPGC PhD program benefits from the excellence of two Max Planck Institutes and one of the largest universities in Germany. With its joint PhD regulations, boards and supervision agreements, both from the Max Planck side and the university side, the MPGC is unique in its structure and devoted to highly interdisciplinary research. Projects in natural sciences are offered to excellent students from all over the world. The MPGC

The Max Planck Graduate Center with the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz provides an excellent research environment for doctoral studies. In particular ideas linking the traditional disciplines and the established research groups are highly welcome and will be supervised in joint advisory groups.

Research

The MPGC’s research fields build bridges between the traditional disciplines of biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and medicine. Similar processes may be investigated in different environments.

Topics currently offered are:• Gas transport in materials, biology, lungs and the atmosphere• Unifying characterization of synthetic and biological macromolecules and their assemblies• Multiscale modelling in materials science, biology and earth sciences • Chemical characterization of biosphere atmosphere-interaction• Novel drug delivery technologies • Formation of complex order from the microscopic to the macroscopic regime• Biological processes interacting with the atmosphere• Complex fluids on a macromolecular scale • Characterisation of solid earth–climate interactions through earth history • Biomineralisation, proxy incorporation and animal skeletons as paleo-climate indicators
