WELCOME TO EARLY YEARS
We look forward to your child joining the Early Years Department at Rose Hill School. Our aim is to ensure that we provide a high standard of care and education where each child feels valued and safe. We want all children to be stimulated, motivated and happy, and to have a positive approach to learning and finding out about the world around them. We recognise the importance of play and offer a friendly learning environment which respects every child as an individual. We give the children the opportunity to experience planned and purposeful activities within a broad and balanced curriculum. These activities are appropriate for their stage of development, and build on what they can already do. The sessions are organised so that the children can select from a range of activities and learn to see a task to its completion. They are also encouraged to
take part in adult-‐led and large group activities, which broaden their experiences and help them to acquire new skills. Learning should be fun! As far as your child is concerned this planned and structured curriculum is ‘just playing!’ Our aim is to ensure that each child has the chance to join with other children and adults to enjoy learning together through play and work. Generous care and attention is maintained by our ratio of qualified staff to children as set through the Welfare Requirements. We are pleased to be welcoming both your child and you to Rose Hill School and we look forward to working in partnership to help your child to learn and develop. We aim to add to the life of the local community and offer a service that promotes equality and values diversity. We are always happy to discuss any concerns or questions you may have. Children always feel more confident in situations if they are familiar with what is being asked of them. We have listed some suggestions that may be useful in preparation for their start at Rose Hill.
Please help your child to develop their individual skills. They could practice:
• using the toilet and washing their hands
independently • dressing and undressing • using a knife and fork • hanging up their coat • wiping their nose and putting the tissue in the bin! • tidying up (at school they will be encouraged to
‘choose, use and put away!’) • packing their own bag (so that they know where
things are) • playing games to encourage sharing and turn-‐taking (please do not always let them win!) • helping with jobs such as laying the table or hanging out the washing
Please ensure that all clothes and possessions are clearly labelled with your child’s name and encourage him/her to recognise it. (Please use lower case letters and only use a capital letter at the beginning of their name as this is how they will learn to write in school). We have found that mittens on elastic are extremely beneficial for young children as this not only eliminates the loss of the mittens but is also reassuring for the child to know where his/her mittens are. It is always useful for the class teacher to be kept informed of any changes in your child’s life. (Even if it may seem as if it is a small issue, children’s behaviour can often be affected.) All information is treated as confidential. Early Years Staff are very happy to discuss any concerns at a mutually convenient time.
THE FIRST DAY
Rose Hill School
6
Arrival • On the first day only, children can arrive up to 9am.
Registration is by 8.40am on all other days. • External classroom doors open at 8.25 am (if you are
not familiar with the building, please come to the front door of the Pre-‐Prep department.)
• You are, of course, welcome to come in to settle your child. It is always important to say goodbye and to reassure your child that you will be back to collect them. However, our experience shows us that the longer you stay to settle your child on their first day, the harder it is for them (and you!) to say goodbye.
What to bring • Book bag • Healthy (nut free) snack in a named container (drinks of water/milk are provided) • Spare underwear. • Blue Rose Hill Coat • Grey Rose Hill Fleece • Rose Hill PE bag containing the following (to be kept in school all week)
Rose Hill tracksuit Rose Hill White polo shirt White socks Black plimsoles Trainers (white) Wellies (any design)
Collection • Kindergarten, pick up should be made from the external classroom doors at 12 noon. • Reception children are released to the person collecting them at 3.30pm from in front of the Pre Prep.
On the first day your child will probably be looking to see you at the appropriate time – therefore it is
extremely beneficial if you are able to be prompt. UNIFORM During the first half of the Autumn term girls in Kindergarten may wear a white school polo shirt instead of the white roll neck jumper, and short white socks. The Early Years staff appreciate that the transition may take a little time. However, we pride ourselves on a warm welcome and good communication and we are all here to make your child, and you, feel happy.
THE SCHOOL DAY

Arrivals Parents escort children to the appropriate entrance door and wait until the class teacher opens the door at 8.25 am. Registration is taken by 8.40 am. A facility is available for parents with a regular work commitment to leave their children between 8am and 8.15am to be supervised in the Octagon. (This arrangement needs to be made, in advance, with the Head of Pre-‐Prep.) Snacks All children can access water throughout the day as required. They have a drink of milk (or water, if preferred) before morning break and bring a healthy snack to eat at this time. If a child forgets their snack, one is provided by the kitchen. During the afternoon (when children stay) they are given milk (or water) to drink and school supplies a healthy snack. Healthy snack suggestions: bread sticks, rice cakes, crackers, a savoury sandwich, Babybel or cubed cheese, fruit (fresh or dried), chopped raw vegetables. Lunch (when children stay) The weekly menu appears in the school newsletter. Early Years children are served by a familiar member of staff and are encouraged to try different foods, to eat what is on their plate and to have good table manners. There is a choice of dessert each day, which includes fruit and yoghurt. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN EARLY YEARS
Rose Hill Early Years Department aims to support parents/carers as their children’s first and most important educators by involving them in their child’s education, both in and out of school. Rose Hill believes that early years education and care is significantly improved when parents/carers work together in partnership with staff. The aim is to support, encourage and reinforce best practice -‐ guiding or advising parents/carers where necessary.
Prior to a child starting at Rose Hill, parents/carers are asked to complete the necessary forms and to bring their child to taster sessions. Parents of new Early Years children are invited to a Welcome Evening during the term before joining, where they have the opportunity to talk to staff, including the school nurse, as well as other new parents.
Parents/carers are encouraged to ensure on-‐going communication to improve the practitioner’s knowledge of their and to support the family. Additional information eg: illness in the family, moving house, or changes in the child’s eating or sleeping habits, can all help to aid best practice for each individual.
It is the parents/carers responsibility to inform Rose Hill of any changes of information relating to their home address or emergency contact details. Any person who is a new carer within a family, should be introduced to the school prior to the first occasion that they are required to collect the child. If this is not possible, for any reason, then a code word or number may be used by prior arrangement with the parent and school.
Parents/carers are welcomed by ‘key workers’ who are happy to talk with them about their children. When longer discussion time is required, appointments can be arranged.
Parents are encouraged to inform staff of any skills or activities that they may wish to come in and share with the children during school time. There are many ways that Rose Hill promotes good communication with families:
• Face to face daily contact • My Unique Story Books (plus ‘My World’ Books in Reception) • Weekly newsletter which is available to download each Friday • Parent mail and text mail • Notes(from teachers and/or parents/carers) put into child’s book bag • Home School books or Reading record • Information and notices put on classroom windows or notice boards • The facility to contact the Head of Early Years by telephone or by email
[email protected] • Three written reports each year, one per term • Three consultation evenings, one per term and additional information meetings

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
At Rose Hill, the health and welfare of your child is paramount to us and as the School Nurse, I work closely alongside the teaching staff to ensure the highest level of care is delivered. In an attempt to provide a safe and healthy environment for the children, please note
the following points from the School Policy:
• Please ensure that the school are made aware (and updated as necessary) of any Medical Issues, in particular any Food Allergies or concerns regarding your child’s general development.
• In the event of your child developing Vomiting and/or Diarrhoea, in accordance with Health Protection Agency guidelines, they should be off school, and remain so, until they have been symptom free for 48hrs.
• A School Medicine Form (available from school website) needs to be filled in for each medication, signed and handed into the school office along with the medication. ALL MEDICATION should be handed into the School Nurse (via the school office) No child should have medication on them or in their school bags. The only exception is Asthmatics and those who require an Epipen.
• The School adheres to a strict Communicable Diseases Policy so please contact the School Nurse if your child has been given a definitive diagnosis by your GP, for further guidance on each specific illness. With regard to undiagnosed rashes, we would ask that you consult your GP before your child returns to school. This results in not only the best care for your individual child, but ensures that we protect other vulnerable children and members of staff.
• Head lice are unfortunately part and parcel of daily life at School but we obviously try to keep cases to a minimum. It would help us greatly if you would check your child’s hair regularly and carry out the appropriate treatment if necessary. Please may I remind you that it is school policy that pupils with long hair should have their hair tied back. The websites www.chc.org and www.nittygritty.co.uk provide good up to date information about head lice and the various treatment options that are available.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns or queries. I am available every day from 09.00-‐ 16.15 and can be contacted via the school office or via email at:

THE EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE
We know that a fun stimulating environment is paramount to young children’s happiness and development. The provision for children’s development and learning is guided by The Early Years Foundation Stage and is detailed in our Early Years Curriculum Policy. The Early Years Foundation Stage has recently been reviewed and changes were effective from September 2012. Parents/carers can access further information via the DFE website. The following four themes underpin all the guidance, and with the principles that inform them, work together for children in the Early Years Foundation Stage. A Unique Child Every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-‐assured.
Positive Relationships Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships. Enabling Environments Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and carers. Learning and Development Children develop and learn in different ways. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities. Practitioners teach children by ensuring challenging, playful opportunities across the prime and specific areas of learning and development.
Rose Hill School
20
Prime areas are fundamental, work together, and move through to support development in all other areas.
• Personal, Social and Emotional Development • Communication and Language • Physical Development
Specific areas include essential skills and knowledge for children to participate successfully in society.
• Literacy • Mathematics • Understanding the World • Expressive Arts and Design
The Practice Guidance also sets out in ‘Development Matters’ the likely stages of progress a child makes along their journey towards the ‘Early Learning Goals’. These statements are the recognised levels of achievement which will then form a platform for further learning for each child as they make the transition to Year One. At Rose Hill we have regard to these matters when we assess children and plan for their individual learning. Children start to learn about the world around them from the moment they are born. The care and education offered by Rose Hill helps children to continue to do this by providing interesting activities that are appropriate for their age and stage of development. Our approach to learning and development and assessment is:
Learning through play Play helps young children to learn and develop through doing and talking, which research has shown to be the means by which young children learn to think. In some of the activities that are offered, children decide how they will use the resources and, in others, an adult takes the lead in helping the children to take part in the activity.
Assessment We assess how young children are learning and developing by observing them frequently. We use information that we gain from observations, as well as from photographs, to document their progress and where this may be leading them. We believe that parents know their children best and we ask them to contribute to assessments by sharing information about what their children like to do at home and how they as parents are supporting development. We undertake periodic assessment

summaries at regular intervals as well as times of transition, such as when a child moves into the next class. These form part of children’s records of achievement.
The Unique Story The setting keeps a record of achievement in the form of a Unique Story for each child. Staff and parents working together on their child's record of achievement is one of the ways in which the key personnel and parents work in partnership. Your child's Unique Story helps us to celebrate together her/his interests and achievements and identify your child’s ‘next steps’ to provide what your child needs for her/his well-‐being and learning.
Working together for your children In the Early Years Department we maintain the ratio of adults to children that is set through the Welfare Requirements. This helps us to:
• give time and attention to each child • talk with the children about their interests and
activities • help children to experience and benefit from
the activities we provide • allow the children to explore and be
adventurous in safety.
At Rose Hill we recognise parents as the first and most important educators of their children. All of the staff see themselves as partners with parents in providing care and education for their child. There are many ways in which parents can take part in their child’s learning and development:
• exchanging knowledge about their children's needs, activities, interests and progress with the staff
• sharing their own special interests with the children • taking part in events and informal discussions about the activities and curriculum provided by
the setting; • joining in school activities and those run by the Parents Association. • building friendships with other families in the setting.
The Early Years department uses a key persons approach. Your child's key person will be the person who works with you to make sure that what we provide is right for your child's particular needs and interests. When your child first starts at Rose Hill, they will help your child to settle and throughout the year, they will help your child to benefit from the activities.
Rose Hill School
22
Timetable and routines Rose Hill believes that care and education are equally important in the experience which we offer children. The routines and activities that make up the day are provided in ways that: help each child to feel that she/he is a valued member of the group
• ensure the safety of each child • help children to gain from the social experience of being part of the school community • provide children with opportunities to learn and help them to value learnin We organise our sessions so that the children can choose from, and work at, a range of activities and, in doing so, build up their ability to select and work through a task to its completion. The children are also helped and encouraged to take part in adult-‐led small and large group activities which introduce them to new experiences and help them to gain new skills, as well as helping them to learn to work with others. Outdoor activities contribute to children's health, their physical development and their knowledge of the world around them. The children have the opportunity, and are encouraged, to take part in outdoor child-‐chosen and adult-‐led activities, as well as those provided indoors. Meals and Snacks Lunch times are a social time at which children and adults eat together. Children are encouraged to use a knife and fork and have good table manners. Meals are planned so that the children are served healthy and nutritious food. Please inform us if your child has any specific dietary needs. Your child should bring a healthy snack each day for morning break and school will provide an afternoon snack when your child stays for a full day. Policies The school's policies help us to make sure that the service provided is of a high quality and that being a part of Rose Hill School is an enjoyable and beneficial experience for each child and her/his parents. Copies of the policies and procedures are available from school and many are available to download from the school website www.rosehillschool.co.uk. Safeguarding children All schools have a duty under the law to help safeguard children against suspected or actual ‘significant harm’. Our employment practices follow strict guidelines and we have a procedure for managing complaints or allegations. Special needs As part of the school's policy to make sure that its provision meets the needs of each individual child, we take account of any special needs a child may have. The setting works to the requirements of the 1993 Education Act and The Special Educational Needs Code of Practice (2001).
Rose Hill School

Clothing We provide protective clothing for the children when they play with messy activities. We encourage children to gain the skills that help them to be independent and look after themselves. These include taking themselves to the toilet and taking off, and putting on, outdoor clothes. Clearly named items make this task considerably easier for children, as they can become anxious when everyone’s clothing looks the same. It is helpful if every child has all items of school uniform in school each day as we spend time outside whatever the weather!

ADDITIONAL USEFUL INFORMATION PARKING We are fortunate to have a relatively secure facility for dropping-‐off and picking-‐up. In the interests of safety and to help ease congestion and delay the following points must be observed:
• The 10 mph speed limit must always be observed • Parking in front of the Main Entrance and in reserved spaces is not allowed • Parking along Rydal Drive (and the emergency turning circle at the top) is never permitted • Children must be supervised after pick-‐up, especially in the Car Parks • The play area to the right of the Sports Hall can only be used for parking on match days (Wednesdays
and Thursdays) if there is no other car park space. • Please keep the yellow, hatched areas clear at all times for emergency vehicle access • In order to instil good road safety habits, please use designated pathways and zebra crossing
DRESS AND APPEARANCE Correct uniform must be worn at all times at school. Please adhere to the uniform lists Children should be encouraged to take a pride in their appearance as follows:
• Shoes/sandals should be cleaned regularly • Hair should be kept tidy and trendy styles avoided please. Boys hair must be off the collar. Girls must
use hair clips or bands to keep long hair off the face. These must be white, pink or brown and of a plain design.
• Watches may be worn from Year 2 and must be named – they are not, however, really necessary. ABSENCE PROCEDURE All absences from school must be authorised by the Headmaster and we are legally obliged to account for absence. If your child is ill, please telephone the school office between 8.15 and 8.45am. Any infectious illnesses must be notified so that other parents can be informed. THE HOUSE SYSTEM At Rose Hill there are three Houses. The houses are named after prominent former pupils of the school. A House Tutor and several teachers are allocated to each House. Baden-‐Powell (Founder of the World Wide Scout movement) Mackinnon (Kent and England cricketer at the turn of the century) Grange (The last Headmaster who owned the school until 1974 and was responsible for
moving it from the London Road site up to Culverden Down in 1966) When pupils arrive at the school they are placed into one of these three houses. PARENTMAIL ParentMail is an e-‐mail communication system from school to home and most letters are sent in this way. It is very important that the school is kept informed of any changes to e-‐mail addresses. If there is a last-‐minute change, information can also be sent by text.
