Main ensembles + Venues of the genre...

Main ensembles –

• Early Rock ranged widely but most rock ensembles usually called rock bands

• Made up of guitars, keyboards, and rhythm section made up of a bass guitar and drum kit.

• The number of people varied, The king of rock n’ roll was solo, Beatles were a quartet etc.

Venues –

• When famous the bands performed at Rock Concerts, or live areas

• Starting out, the bands performed in public to attract audiences, as Rock more of a Public sort of music.

Similarities + Differences in Jazz and Early Rock

Differences:

•Jazz has a orchestra of wind, strings instruments and percussion. Early Rock mostly electric string instruments accompanied with beats.

•Jazz is more sophisticated, soothe, state-of-art and difficult to perform. Whereas early rock is loud, wild, but easier to perform.

•Jazz music is syncopated (swung eighth notes) while rock is more defined as having eighth notes played straight.

Similarities:

•Both genres portray feelings, written and performed to express one’s feelings.

•Time signatures are similar between jazz and rock.

•The instruments utilized between both genres.

What distinctive instruments and

languages are used in the genre?

• Language: English was the main language of the genre as it originated in the US and was big in England.

• There was a slight variation in the English language due to location, but more or less the same.

• Instruments: Electric + Acoustic Guitars, Drum Kits, Key boards, Snare Drum, Steal Bass Electric guitar.

Did written music look different from what you know

today?

• Music was written in the same way from the 20th-21st century, the style of writing out the notes is the same now as it was back then for this genre, but if you were to look at Medieval Music then there would be huge differences.

How can you recognize the genre by listening to the

piece?• Early rock, like many other types of rock

and roll has a very distinctive sound. Just by listening to the music, you are able to tell what genre it is, and we do this by listening out for the different rhythms and instruments. Most fast paced, guitar based pieces of music tend to have a slight heavy tune and therefore are depicted as Rock. Whereas something more mellow with a peppy beat could be taken as modern Pop music.
