Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is hard to believe we are heading towards the

end of the school year. There are a number of

school events that will be happening in the com-

ing weeks. Please note the calendar dates in this

newsletter, which also include the SOL Calen-

dar. We appreciate your support during the test-

ing window. On test dates, we begin by

9:00AM. Please note the specific dates for your

child and try to plan early dismissals around

these dates and times. On April 28th, we recognized our parent volun-

teers with a breakfast. Thank you to all of our

volunteers who come out to support our school,

students, and programs. During the week of May 9-13th, we will be hav-

ing our Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week.

who have planned a week of special events for

our staff. Within this newsletter there is information re-

Members of ERMS Trout in the Classroom Club, along with students from Dominion High School’s Environmental Science classes, released approxi-mately 250 young Brook Trout into Red Bud Run on April 9, 2011. The Brook Trout, raised from eggs, came from the VA Department of Fish and Game last fall. Students hatched and cared for the tender fingerlings in a controlled, cold water environment. Members of the club also learned a

lot about genetic diversity as well as the impor-tance of maintaining healthy streams in Northern Virginia. We also learned a little about fly fishing and fly tying! Four years ago, Eagle Ridge was the first school in Loudoun County to participate in the Trout in the Classroom Program. There are now 5 Loudoun County schools participating and our students have released nearly 600 trout to our cool Virginia waters.

Please remember that in order to cre-ate a healthier and safer environment for all students, Loudoun County Public Schools guidelines prohibit sharing or trading food in the school. While we appreciate that birthdays and other special occasions are often celebrated with food and other items, we are ask-ing you to support the LCPS guidelines by finding other ways to recognize these special days or saving your cele-bration for after school. Additional in-formation and suggestions are available at www.lcps.org at Services: Student Health Services: Food Allergy tab. We appreciate your support in promoting a safer environment for our students.

6TH GRADE Emily Burns Emily Burns is a creative young lady that is willing to go the extra mile to accomplish her goals. Her work is or-ganized and meticulous. She uses her imagination and demonstrates originality in her work. She is a determined student with an exemplary work ethic. She is always prepared and participates with confidence and ease. She demonstrates highly developed collaborative abilities and communication skills. Emily listens to and respects oth-ers. When working in a group, she brings her own ideas, but also works to incorporate the ideas of the others. Emily is an enthusiastic learner that always puts her best foot forward. Jared Lupia There are many outstanding students in keyboarding this year but one student stands out and that is Jared Lu-pia. Jared comes to class ready to learn and he puts forth 100% in all his assignments. Jared is enthusiastic about learning and is an active participant in the process of learning. Jared works hard to accomplish his goals and acquire new skills. Jared’s attitude is always positive and he is a pleasure to have in class.

7TH GRADE Karim Atris

Karim has demonstrated excellence and a desire to further pursue his understanding of how technology works

and how it affects our world. He exhibits a natural ability to solve and to trouble shoot technological systems. Karim exemplifies all that Eagle Ridge students should strive for in tech ed. Congratulations.

strengthens her abilities to logically understand technology and how it could be applied to the real world. Con-

gratulations.

8TH GRADE

Our Foreign Language Department in collaboration with Team Thunderbirds is pleased to recognize Heidi Engebreth as

Student of the Month. Heidi is a great classroom leader in her French Class. She gives full effort in all her assignments and

is a positive mentor for the rest of her classmates. She's always on time and is willing to help her peers. She exhibits respect

toward her teachers, as well as responsibility and trustworthiness. She is definitely the right choice for Student of the Month.

Congratulations Heidi!

The Foreign Language Department in collaboration with Team Thunderbirds is pleased to recognize Tyler Schafer as Stu-

dent of the Month. Tyler starts every class with an infectious grin and continues to exert a positive influence on the class

with his enthusiasm for the language. He enjoys using his growing command of the German language to create and partici-

pate in all of the skits and situations the students act out. Tyler has maintained an excellent average all year, realizing that

higher level classes require higher commitment and effort. Tyler is a positive and successful student who is a joy to teach

and is certain to carry his success on to high school. Congratulations, Tyler!

The Parent Connection Cindy Rolin~Parent Liaison

Are you looking for information on how your child can become a better student? You, a better

parent? Or, even a support group or parent organization for a child with a disability? If you

answered yes to any of these questions, than the LCPS Parent Resource Center may be for

you.

The Parent Resource Center (PRC) offers a variety of services at no cost to families. They have

a lending library of books, articles, and videotapes on disability and parenting topics. They

also offer training through workshops and seminars on a wide range of topics. The PRC meet

individually with parents whose children are experiencing difficulty at school, at home, or in the

community and wish to explore and consider the range of options available. The Parent Re-

source Center can also assist parents in preparing for special education and other meetings at

school.

If you need more information on how the Loudoun County Public Schools Parent Resource

Center can benefit you and/or your family, please contact them at 571-252-2185 or

www.loudoun.k12.va.us/prc, or as always please contact Parent Liaison, Cindy Rolin for more

information at [email protected].

News:

The Eagle Ridge Guidance Dept. is currently working on our rising 6th, 7th and 8th grade

students’ schedules for next school year. A Course Verification Letter should have come

home with your child’s 3rd quarter report card. Please take a look at the letter and spend a

few moments going over the selections with your child. If the classes listed are correct,

and you do not wish to make any changes, the form does not need to be returned. If after

reviewing the form, you and your student wish to make changes, please cross out the

course you want to change and write in the name of the course your child would like to

take instead next to it. Please have your child return the form to their counselor, if they

have made any requests for changes. If you have any questions regarding courses for next

year, please contact your grade level counselor for assistance. The deadline to make

changes for course selections for the 2011 – 2012 school year is June 1, 2011.

This year, Eagle Ridge formed a new committee in order to create business partnerships.

We are looking for businesses in our community who would like to partner with our school, in order

to best serve our students.

If you own a business or know a business that might be interested, Eagle Ridge Middle

School would like to invite your business to become a partner with our school to positively impact

the lives of our students! Our school community consists of over one thousand students, over one

hundred staff members, and thousands of parents and community members. It takes the com-

bined effort of our school community along with local businesses to create a complete learning

environment for the students of Loudoun County.

How can your business help our school? Eagle Ridge offers three levels of partnership to

create a bond between our students and local community businesses. We also are interested in

businesses that would like to present on career or curriculum related information. These partner-

ship levels include:

SILVER: Donation of Goods- (i.e. complementary meals, business coupons, store items,

etc.) to students as a community business gift. These are given to students at quarterly

award nights recognizing academic and character achievement.

GREEN: Purchasing a “Business Card”- ($100 per quarter/$400 per year). Your dona-

tion is used to purchase educational supplies (i.e. literature books, instructional supplies,

student awards, etc.). These 2’ x 3’ signs are displayed at all nightly events which allow

the school community to recognize your commitment to Eagle Ridge.

GOLD: Technology Grant- a cash donation of $500+ for the purchase of technology

items. Some examples of items that may be purchased are printers for the laptop carts,

a new laptop cart, document cameras (elmos), flip cameras, IPods for podcasting, and

many more hardware options.

If you are interested in participating with Eagle Ridge at any level, please contact Nikole Mullen,

business partner chair at

(571) 252- 2146 or [email protected].
