General information

Timisoara is the most western city of Romania, having a rich intercultural tradition resulted from a complex history. Throughout history the city was successively under Hungarian, Ottoman and Habsburg domination.

The e-Patrimonium Timisensis Project

The impressive number of studies that deal with the history of Timisoara contrasts with the attempts, so far shy, to create a virtual presentation of the cultural legacy of Timisoara that would enable anyone to be initiated into a temporal and spatial dimension of the city.

Our approach is following the line of attempts to popularize and preserve the patrimony of Timisoara. The project is called e-Patrimonium Timisiensis and it addresses the public that is in search of guidance, wishing to expand the cultural horizon. The results of our efforts have been materialized in the making of a website that will highlight the elements of the archaeological, historical and architectural patrimony.

Obiective

e-Patrimonium Timisiensis is meant to be an alternative source of documentation to the classical methods previously used, a source that will present in an electronic format multimedia data (text, image, video, sound) concerning the archaeology, history and architecture of the city of Timisoara.

Technical data

1. The texts have been taken from bibliography (libraries and archives) or are new (documents, photographs, boards, unpublished archaeological discoveries), each with the mentioning of the sources from which they were taken.

Page 6: e-Patrimonium Timisiensis An Hypermedia Gate to Timişoara City Authors: Dorel MICLE, Ionuţ ROMA, Vlad BĂLU, Adrian CÎNTAR West University of Timişoara,

Technical data

2. The maps have been made using Corel Draw 12, following the current street network of the city, the geographical coordinates and the street names updated for 2005, in a system of CMYK color combination – for the basic graphic of the map, and RGB – for the symbols used, at a scale of 1:14000. The quality of the exported images is 300 dpi and is of high resolution, but for a reasonable navigation speed the images have been downsized to 50%.

Technical data

The website includes three types of maps:

1. general city maps that were modified using different pictograms to identify archaeological points, architectural and public forum monuments

2. maps that highlight districts, with pictograms to identify archaeological points, architectural and public forum monuments, while the other areas are blurred

3. detailed maps of quadrants that include each monument separately

Technical data

3. The color photographs were taken with a professional digital camera, at different resolutions: 1600x1200 for the general images of the squares, 1280x960 for monuments and buildings and 640x480 for details and characteristic elements. The photographs were edited and optimized for web launching using Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7 in JPEG format.

Technical data

4. The videos were done with a Sony digital camera and processed with Movie Maker and saved in WMV format.

5. The sound records were done in the multimedia laboratory of The West University of Timisoara, saved in MP3 format. A Macromedia Flash application was designed for the sound rendering.

The website structure

The makers of the e-Patrimonium Timisiensis project designed the website as a portal structured on domains, types of media documents and areas of interest. Thus the documents can be accessed chronologically, on a temporal axis; on areas of interests (archaeology, architecture or history); zonal (on districts) or on the type of the multimedia document requested (text, image, video or sound).

The website structure

From a structural point of view the main page includes two sections: the technical section and the cultural section.

The website structure a. The technical section

a. The technical section is an element common to all the websites. The only differences are in the functional structuring. The subdivisions of these section are: a search engine (Search), an information download option (text, audio, video) (Download), a guest book (Guest Book), and a series of links to websites that include information which can be connected with the issues tackled by our portal (Links). Having in sight a future expansion of the project we encourage interaction between the visitors and the team. Thus, the visitors can express their opinions by using the contact forms that can be found in this section (Feedback). A map of the website (Site Map) and the frequently asked questions (FAQ) were created for a fast navigation and an easy identification of information.

The website structure b. The Cultural Section

b. The Cultural Section is structured on areas of interest. Their selection will take place both chronologically and spatially, according to the interest. The chronological axis provides a general vision of the history of Timisoara (City History), and of the archaeological discoveries (Archaeology) from the central districts or from the districts that are currently part of the city and that used to be at the periphery of the actual city. The exact delimitation of time periods enables the access to information of the image-text type.

The history of the districts is dealt with briefly in a special column. The purpose of this section is to spatially locate archaeological, historical and architectural points (Districts).

In our approach we also paid attention to the public forum monuments specified in the List of Historical Monuments of the Timis County 2004 (Public Forum Monuments).

The next section deals with the main architectural currents and styles that are mirrored in the urban landscape of Timisoara (Architecture).

The interactive digital map enables the localization of certain important areas or buildings in the city, and allows the user to follow a virtual path by opening video files with sound background (Maps).

Perspectives

1. The next step is the publishing in original of all the studies referring to the archaeology, history and architecture of the city (for some documents the authors have already given their approval, and for the others there are discussions concerning the copyright)

2. The second step will be the thematic diversification by approaching other branches of the patrimony of the city of Timisoara: old books, various documents, stamps, old photographs, numismatics, etc.

3. In the end, we wish to design a data and information base, with multiple users, concerning all the domains of the archaeological, historical and architectural patrimony that our website is limited to.
