High school seniors may be preparing for prom or getting ready to receive their diplomas, but high school juniors may be spending their time in-vestigating various col-leges.During the spring of
their junior year, many high school students study for and take the
Scholastic Achievement Test, or SATs. Test scores and applications factor heavily into where a stu-dent will go to college, but students must also nd a school where they feel comfortable.Choosing the right col-
lege can help a person start o on the right foot. Here are some helpful hints for students when researching colleges.* Brand-name schools
aren’t the be-all, end-all. While the well-known schools, particularly the Ivy League universities, may garner a lot of atten-tion, there are many other lesser-known schools that will provide a quality ed-ucation.
* ink about school size. Students who thrive regardless of class size may not have to worry as much about the size of a school. ose who like an intimate setting and more one-on-one inter-action may want to gear their searches to schools that have a smaller pop-ulation.* Factor in costs. Part of
the decision-making pro-cess will involve the costs of going to school. A pri-vate university will likely be more expensive than a public institution. Al-though some students de-ter paying for college by taking out loans, keeping the bigger picture in mind -- especially the loan pay-
ments that will await stu-dents upon graduation -- can help steer school choices.* Be honest with yourself.
Students should be honest when assessing their ac-ademic history and abil-ities. Some schools have very stringent acceptance policies and will only ac-cept students who t a certain academic prole. If a grade point average or SAT score falls signi-cantly below a school’s requirement, applying to that school and paying the application fee might not be in a student’s best interest.* Seek out personal re-
ferrals. Students can reach out to alumna of
certain schools and get their perspective on a giv-en school. ey can then schedule tours at some of the schools that seem the best ts and judge for themselves if the school are right for them.* ink about personal
and academic interests. Some school decisions are made simply by the programs oered. For a student who has a very specic degree in mind, there may be a limited number of schools that specialize in that course of study. However, a lib-eral arts major can select among a much greater number of options. Also, students should think beyond academics to the
athletics or aer-class ac-tivities oered.* Consider a school’s
proximity to home. Some students want to be close to home, and others want to be as far away as pos-sible. If getting away from home to broaden your horizons is important, then keep in mind the cost of travel on holidays and during breaks. While high school se-
niors are busy choosing prom dates and gradu-ation wardrobes, high school juniors are gener-ally on the hunt for col-leges. Scheduling tours and visiting national col-lege fairs can help stu-dents narrow down their choices.

Study abroad programs give students unique op-portunities to experience other cultures while pursu-ing their degrees. Such pro-
grams appeal to students who want to see the world without interrupting their studies, and many students who study abroad develop an anity for travel that remains with them for the rest of their lives.
When considering study-ing abroad programs or attending college overseas, recent high school gradu-ates or current high school students should consider a few factors before commit-ting to a program.
Language barrierStudents, particularly
those who are not u-ent in a foreign language, may nd it easier to live in countries where English is the primary language. While study abroad stu-dents can expect to work with professors who speak English regardless of where they go, life outside the classroom can be dicult for young students who do not understand the prima-ry language spoken in the c o u n t r y
where they will be study-ing.
Life overseasStudents who want to at-
tend school full-time over-seas may benet by rst studying through a study abroad program before committing to a two- or four-year program in an-other country. is gives students a chance to get a feel for a country and its culture and lifestyle be-fore making a long-term commitment to living and studying there.
Program sizee safety in numbers phi-
losophy is applicable for all travelers, but it can be espe-cially benecial for young students studying abroad.
Students may feel more safe and comfortable when signing up for programs that include many students as opposed to more exclu-sive programs that include only a handful of students. Large programs provide a built-in social network, and students may feel saf-er exploring foreign cities in large groups made up of fellow students than go-ing it alone or traveling in small groups.
DocumentationStudents should speak
with program directors about the documentation they may need to make the most of their time overseas. CEA Study Abroad recom-mends that students bring photocopies of all import-
ant documents, including passports, driver’s licenses, airline tickets, health in-surance cards, and student identication cards, with them when studying over-seas. is protects students should their wallets or backpacks be lost or sto-len while they’re overseas. Students also should in-clude a list of any medical conditions or medications they take among their doc-umentation and include their emergency contact information on this list.Studying abroad can be a
very rewarding experience for young students, who must consider a host of fac-tors before committing to a program so they can have the most enjoyable experi-ence possible.

While high school seniors on the cusp of graduating and moving on to col-lege give ample thought to their college majors, many are likely to change ma-jors at least once aer enrolling in a college or uni-versity. According to
the University of La Verne, be-tween 50 and 70 percent of college students change majors at least once, and many of them will change their majors three times before they
graduate. e Uni-versity also reports that 50 percent of college graduates pursue careers that are not related to their majors. Ca-reer and person-
ality assessments can help students determine which subjects they may want to study upon enrolling in a col-lege or university. Such assessments
can help students discover their in-terests, and then students can work with advisors and career counselors at their colleges or universities to nd
majors that align with those inter-ests. High school
seniors on their way to college in the com-ing months can rest easy
that, even if they don’t know what to study when they arrive on college campuses this fall, many of their fel-low freshmen are equally uncertain.
