1.0 Project Summary

The Düzova Wind Power Project is located in Bergama

district in the province of Izmir in Turkey. The project went

into operation in August 2009 with a generation capacity

of 15 MW, provided by 6 wind turbines. It also involved the

establishment of a connection to the national electricity grid.

In September 2010 the wind farm was extended, increasing

its capacity to 30 MW.

This Gold Standard project demonstrates the capacity of

wind farms to create substantial greenhouse gas reductions,

improve energy security, improve air quality and improve

local livelihoods. In this way the Düzova Wind Power Project

hopes to help Turkey develop a sustainable renewable energy

industry.

The additional revenue from the sale of carbon credits

provided the necessary incentive to justify the investment in

this wind farm. Without the carbon revenue the project would

not have gone ahead.

2.0 Project Benefits

Environmental – The Düzova Wind Power Project

contributes significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gas

emissions by creating new electricity generation capacity

using 100% renewable energy. This replaces electricity which

would otherwise have been generated using fossil fuel,

which is currently the dominant source of energy in Turkey.

Furthermore, the Düzova project reduces the level of air

pollution resulting from fossil fuel combustion.

Socio-Economic - The project also has local socio-economic

benefits, including:

• Repairing the school building and constructing a

ballpark for the primary school in Asagıkırıklar village;

• Providing air conditioning and stationery goods to the

primary school in Asagıkırıklar village;

• Improving the roads of Asagıkırıklar and Yenikent

village;

• Building a weigh bridge for Asagıkırıklar village;

• Donating food and electricity installation to the local

community;

• Paying off the electricity loan of Suleymanlı and

Asagıkırıklar villages.

2.1 Key Achievements

RAvoids GHG emissions

RReduces local air pollution

RReduces fossil fuel dependence

RPromotes alternative energy in Turkey

RStimulates local economic development

RSecures electricity supply

RFunds additional social initiatives

3.0 Background

Turkey’s rapidly growing economy is placing ever increasing

demands on the national grid. In order to meet this rise in

energy demand, it is essential the country establishes

sustainable electricity production as well as reducing the

amount of its overall greenhouse gas emissions.

It is hoped that with current and future development of

renewable energy production Turkey’s increasing energy

consumption can be decoupled from a proportional increase in

CO2 emissions. At the end of 2010 Turkey had installed wind

power capacity of 1,265 MW, yet wind power still contributes

less than 1% of Turkey’s total electricity requirements.

Investment in wind power plants in Turkey is still considered a

risky investment as experience is sparse, and the economic

model is new. The revenue generated through the sale

of carbon credits provides the crucial incentive to drive

investment in electricity generation from renewable sources.

The Düzova wind power project is located in Bergama district

in the province of Izmir, on the West coast of Turkey. The

province borders the Aegean Sea, and encloses the Gulf of

Izmir. Izmir province is divided into 30 districts, and has a total

population of around 4 million people.

4.0 Technical Details

The Düzova project consists of 6 GE 2.5xl model wind

turbines, each with an output capacity of 2.5 MW. The blades

are 100 metres in diameter and the turbines stand 85 metres

high.

The wind turbines are connected to the wind farm substation

through 34.5 kV underground cables. The voltage is

raised to 154 kV and is transferred to the grid via a 3 km

long transmission line which is connected to the bypassing

Bergama-Ayvalık transmission line of TEIAS, the national grid

operator.

The entire net electricity production is approximately 50,000

MWh per year.

5.0 How the project meets Climate Friendly’s principles

Climate Friendly only invests in projects that:

Principles How this project meets these criteria

Address the root cause of climate change PWind power doesn’t emit GHGs & replaces fossil fuel based

energy

Are permanent PEmissions reductions cannot be reversed

Are additional PCarbon finance was required to overcome technical & financial barriers

Are verifiable PIndependently verified by Bureau Veritas Certification Holding SAS

Are project based PNot allowance-based (Turkey does not have a Kyoto target or

any national emissions allowance system)

Contribute to sustainable development PReduces pollution, creates employment, facilitates technology

development, improves local infrastructure, supports local social

programs

Are synchronous PEmissions reductions have already occurred

Are exclusive PRobust assurance process & registry system ensures no double counting
