These idols would be kept on the Chariot of Lord Raghunath at Dhalpur Ground...Kullu Dussehra is the festival observed in the month of October in Himachal Pradesh state in northern India. It is celebrated in the Dhalpur maidan in the Kullu valley. Dussehra at Kullu commences on the tenth day of the rising moon, i.e. on 'Vijay Dashmi' day itself and continues for seven days. Its history dates back to the 17th century when local King Jagat Singh installed an idol of Raghunath on his throne as a mark of penance. After this, god Raghunath was declared as the ruling deity of the Valley. The State government has accorded the status of International festival to the Kullu Dussehra, which attracts tourists in large numbers.

Dussehra Celebrations in Kullu In the stunningly beautiful Kullu Valley, Dussehra festival is celebrated with a procession of idols,. The Dussehra celebrations in Kullu are world famous as more than two hundred deities are believed to meet for the unusual Dussehra celebration which begin on Vijayadashami itself and the celebrations continue for seven days. Those carrying the deities are usually paid an incentive by the State Government of between 10,000 to 70,000 rupees (US$215 to US$1,500) to make the journey and join in the celebrations. The celebrations include a dazzlingly decorated chariot carrying the idol of Lord Raghunath ji which is pulled from its place in Dhalpur Maidan to another spot across the Maidan by big ropes. The celebrations are attended by various other village deities mounted on colourful palanquins. The pulling of ropes which forms a huge procession is considered as sacred by the local Kullu people. Interestingly it is mandatory for all the village deities to attend the Dussehra celebrations at Kullu. On the last day of the festival the chariot is taken to the banks of River Beas where a pile of wood and grass are burnt symbolizing the burning of Lanka..

It was a sea of humanity as thousands of people, including domestic and foreign tourists, thronged the hill station of Kullu to celebrate Dusshera. Same happens every year, since years., giving wide scope for every effort to reach locals of Himanchal Pradesh in right manner and at right time. Approx. 1500-2000 visitors had visited our stall daily and we distributed leaflets and gifts like key chains, Branded Bags, pens etc. to the visitors.

Election commission's order to keep politics away from international Dussehra festivity in Kullu may have disappointed leaders, but youths are enjoying the programes without political speeches. For the first time, Kullu Dussehra is showcasing only cultural, traditional and entertaining events, and there is no space for politics. Though the administration has ordered to organize programmes only till 10pm, but youth viewers are very happy that netas are not allowed to disturb them. "I'm thankful to those who barred politicians from the stage of Dussehra. Otherwise they come, take hours and ruin our enjoyment throughout the festival," a second year student Yogesh Kumar said, adding that Dussehra organizing committee should make it an every year arrangement. "Because this is historic and cultural event, all ceremonies should be performed by people from the same background, not by netas," he explained. Sunita Khemu, a final year student believes politics and culture should be kept separate and she is enjoying the uninterrupted programs for the first time in her life. "Leaders should understand that we do not have any interest in their boring speeches. Now that we have no advertisements and intervals, extension of programmes till midnight would have enhanced the fervour of Dussehra," she said. Along with cultural programmes, artists from many countries perform filmy dance, songs, fashion shows, artistic acts and many more. One after another regular performances are keeping audience spell-bound. For computer applications student Manoj Sharma said, "I entered gate of Lal Chand Prarthi Kala Kendra for the first time in my life during Dussehra. Earlier, I and my friends used to watch performances from outside the walls as politicians bring tight security with them."
