Celebrating 20 Years1995-2015

Durham’s Partnership for Chil-dren is 20 years old. As we cel-ebrate two decades of prepar-ing Durham’s children to succeed, it is both humbling and inspiring to know that we stand on the shoulders of those who have come before us so that we can see to a farther horizon.

Perhaps at no other time in our history has our mission been more critical. Funding is at an all-time low, but a child only has one chance at childhood. There is no time to wait. Now is when we must dig deeper, be more cre-ative, develop innovative collabo-rations, bring new voices to the movement, and strengthen our own resolve in order to continue serving the more than 23,000 children birth to age 5 in Durham.

We received the GSK IMPACT Award this year, a perfect cap-stone to our first 20 years. This prestigious award recognizes our achievements in building a health-ier community through our In-novative, Measured, Partnered,

Accountable, Collaborative and Transformative work, all of which is featured in this report.

We are so proud to serve as the convener and facilitator of Dur-ham’s early childhood system. We are your Partnership. We don’t just operate in Durham, we belong to Durham. Everything that has been accomplished during our first 20 years is a testament to Durham’s spirit of collaboration.

The Partnership works alongside and invests in high- quality programs by awarding state-funded Smart Start grants to community organizations. All funded partners provide evidence-based/evidence-informed services that are monitored and evaluated to ensure a powerful impact on:

Durham Early Head Start is a federally-funded child devel-opment and family support program for low-income ex-pectant women and families with infants and toddlers ages birth to three.

The statewide NC Pre-Kindergarten initiative prepares eligible 4-year-olds for school by providing high-quality early education in both public and private settings.The Partnership administers the NC Pre-K program in Durham County and leads a universal application process with six collaborative agencies to serve and assist families throughout the community.

Entering kindergarten is one of the most significant events in a young child’s life, as it sets the tone for his or her entire educational experience.The TTK Initiative, a collaboration with Durham Public Schools, builds connections that prepare children to enter kindergarten feeling excited, ready to learn, and supported by their schools, families and community.
