Saint Valentine's Day, also known as Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is a holiday observed on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not a holiday in most of them. St. Valentine's Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. Several martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belonged to February 14, and added to later martyrologies. A popular hagiographical account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). In Europe, Saint Valentine's Keys are given to lovers "as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. Consequently, it will soon be that time of year when our thoughts turn to those we really hold dear. Those we have now, or those we have had in the past. Valentine's Day is one of our most popular periods, inspiring a flurry of card and gift giving to those we love or care about. Ways to celebrate the Valentine:

1. Paper valentine; Valentine's Day doesn't have to just be for couples, it can be for friends, kids, parents, and even for your pets! You also don't have to go crazy and spend a lot of money on those you love, get creative and have fun.

2. Dinner with friends; You can do this regardless of everyone’s relationship status. Sure, some couples may already have plans, but others will be glad for a low-key evening together. And if one of your friends is feeling down, this may cheer them right up.

3. Homemade meal; A candle lit dinner at home is undeniably romantic 4. Recreate Your First Date; To commemorate your relationship, pay homage to your first

date. It doesn’t have to be an exact repeat- no need to attend basketball game or fly back across the country- but a creative tribute shows how you value your memories of your time spent together. Eat the same meal or listen to the same band you saw that night

5. Anti-love party; If you feel like socializing on Valentine's Day, invite your friends over for a party. If you're in a relationship, make it a party for couples. If you're single, make it an anti-love party

6. Invite your parents over; If you have not seen your family in a while, invite them over for dinner. They will find the gesture sweet, and they will never turn their favorite daughter/son down.

7. Go for shopping; It's a great way to expand your wardrobe

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that occurs naturally in all parts of the body. Your

body needs some cholesterol to work properly. But if you have too much in your blood, it can

Page 7: DURATION OF THE PROGRAMMES - Nnamdi Azikiwe …unizik.edu.ng/nauweb/bulletin_news/bulletin/1424858964BULLETIN VOL... · students who applied for Law and Environmental Health, but

combine with other substances in the blood and stick to the walls of your arteries. This is called plaque. Plaque can narrow your arteries or even block them. High levels of cholesterol in the blood can increase your risk of heart disease. Your cholesterol levels tend to rise as you get older. There are usually no signs or symptoms that you have high blood cholesterol, but it can be detected with a blood test. You are likely to have high cholesterol if members of your family have it, if you are overweight or if you eat a lot of fatty foods. Your blood cholesterol level has a lot to do with your chances of getting heart disease. High blood cholesterol is one of the major risk factors for heart disease. A risk factor is a condition that increases your chance of getting a disease. In fact, the higher your blood cholesterol level, the greater your risk for developing heart disease or having a heart attack. When there is too much cholesterol (a fat-like substance) in your blood, it builds up in the walls of your arteries. Over time, this buildup causes "hardening of the arteries" so that arteries become narrowed and blood flow to the heart is slowed down or blocked. The blood carries oxygen to the heart, and if enough blood and oxygen cannot reach your heart, you may suffer chest pain. If the blood supply to a portion of the heart is completely cut off by a blockage, the result is a heart attack. High blood cholesterol itself does not cause symptoms, so many people are unaware that their cholesterol level is too

high. It is important to find out what your cholesterol numbers are because lowering cholesterol levels that are too high lessens the risk for developing heart disease and reduces the chance of a heart attack or dying of heart disease, even if you already have it. Cholesterol lowering is important for everyone--younger, middle age, and older adults; women and men; and people with or without heart disease. Everyone age 20 and older should have their cholesterol measured at least once every 5 years. It is best to have a blood test called a "lipoprotein profile" to find out your cholesterol numbers. This blood test is done after a 9- to 12-hour fast and gives information about your:

Total cholesterol LDL (bad) cholesterol--the main source of

cholesterol buildup and blockage in the arteries

HDL (good) cholesterol--helps keep cholesterol from building up in the arteries

Triglycerides--another form of fat in your blood

If it is not possible to get a lipoprotein profile done, knowing your total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol can give you a general idea about your cholesterol levels. If your total cholesterol is 200 mg/dL or more or if your HDL is less than 40 mg/dL, you will need to have a lipoprotein profile done. See how your cholesterol numbers compare to the tables below.

Total Cholesterol Level Category

Less than 200 mg/dL Desirable

200-239 mg/dL Borderline High

240 mg/dL and above High

* Cholesterol levels are measured in milligrams (mg) of cholesterol per deciliter (dL) of blood.

LDL Cholesterol Level LDL-Cholesterol Category

Less than 100 mg/dL Optimal

100-129 mg/dL Near optimal/above optimal

130-159 mg/dL Borderline high

160-189 mg/dL High

190 mg/dL and above Very high

HDL (good) cholesterol protects against heart disease, so for HDL, higher numbers are better. A level less than 40 mg/dL is low and is considered a major risk factor because it increases your risk for developing heart disease. HDL levels of 60 mg/dL or more help to lower your risk for heart disease.

Triglycerides can also raise heart disease risk. Levels that are borderline high (150-199 mg/dL) or high (200 mg/dL or more) may need treatment in some people. (Curled from Google)
