A Message from the President Dunbar Village Business Association

Welcome to our second issue of Dunbar Life Magazine and thank you to the community for all of the meaningful feedback on our first publication this past September. What we heard was overwhelmingly positive. We hope that this publication will continue to provide a catalyst for future conversations allowing us all to get to know each other better and celebrate everything that’s great about Dunbar.

Some of you may be surprised to know that our business association is only about 2 ½ years old. During this short time we have endeavoured to create a

more attractive streetscape through banners and flower baskets, to give back to the community through festivals and events such as Harvest Festival, and help our businesses prosper by organiz-ing group-marketing initiatives such as this magazine. Communication is key to enhancing this wonderful neighbourhood, and we are working within our own business community to ensure that it knows what’s going on and what we, as an association, are trying to achieve.

Throughout this process, we are becoming aware of all the little things residents and merchants do to make our community better. From the work of the Dunbar Residents’ Association, charitable causes of individual merchants and business owners, outreach activities of the community churches, and the volunteerism from the schools and pre-schools, there is a large contingent of people whose only motivation is to contribute to make Dunbar an even better place to be.

In this issue you’ll read about a couple of Dunbar residents who wanted to contribute and volunteered to be our Dunbar Village Clean Team. If you see Charlie and Fraser tidying up along the street, please give them a little pat on the back for their efforts.

Also in this issue, look for information about our upcoming “Dunbar Village for the Holidays” event that will take place on Saturday, December 18th. There will once again be roaming carolers, free hot chocolate, and the ever-popular horse & carriage rides. New this year you’ll see some of Santa’s Elves who will be giving away small gifts for children of all ages.

Giving back to the community through events, streetscape improvements, and being a better business operator is the driving force behind the goals of the business association. We welcome your feedback and ideas to help us achieve this, and look forward to working with the various community groups to keep the lines of communication open.

Stong’s Marketan interview with Lim Ng

I enjoy managing Stong’s because of the support and guidance I receive from Cori Bonina, who is the fourth generation owner and President of Stong’s, along with our outstanding management team. I enjoy the interactions I have with all of our friendly and loyal customers, many of them, I consider friends. I enjoy working with our dedicated, hard working staff that goes out of their way to provide outstanding customer service. We feel like a family rather than just another employee number. I’ve been on the Board of Directors for the Dunbar Business Association since September 2008. I’m currently the Vice-President and have enjoyed being part of the Association.

Tell me about yourself: I’ve been employed by Stong’s for over 11 years and have been the Store Manager since May 2007 and am very familiar with the Dunbar Community. A Parent’s Survival Guide To Dunbar Soccerby Sue Dvorak

If your child dons that distinctive dark green Dunbar Soccer Association jersey every weekend, he or she is in good com-pany: I was amazed to learn that there are presently over 1750 Dunbar players on some 115 teams supported by 400 volun-teers involved in this veritable army of soccer enthusiasts, from wee ones in long jerseys swarming fields in roving clumps to highly skilled eighteen year olds executing brilliant team play. While players receive countless hours of instruction, maybe their parents could use a few tips. I offer this simple guide borne of experience, having had all six of my kids play Dunbar Soccer over the past 13 years, with ten more years to go.

1. Visit Cheapskates Everyone's favourite sporting consign-ment store just west of Dunbar on 16th Ave may have a soccer

cleat bargain in store for you. Another family's loss in having their child grow two sizes in one month could be your gain.

2. Befriend the Manager The team manager is your life-line to all things organizational for your soccer survival: schedule changes, coaches' instructions, team photo forms, field addresses, you name it. Introduce yourself and extend your thanks in advance.

3. Carpool Get together with some families and arrange carpooling. Don't involve more than three families: this becomes akin to executing a rescue mission rather than a helpful measure to simplify your life.

4. Set a Timer Set the oven timer to mark the luxurious 35 minutes you have available at home during a soccer practice. Otherwise you may accidentally become engaged in some meaningful activity and “forget” your child.

5. Get a Warm Waterproof Winter Coat to wear on game days. All Day. Pay bills, prepare meals and work on the computer while wearing your coat indoors for the remainder of the day: this will help ensure you don't stay cold until Tuesday.

6. Don't Forget the Oranges Forget mergers and project deadlines: real pressure is remembering your scheduled turn to bring oranges for game half-time. Post large reminder notices throughout your home and workplace. The next Saturday you see some frenzied person in Stong's or Dunbar Produce hurling oranges in bags and sprinting for the door, this is not a case of emergency scurvy: this is a par-ent trying to get the oranges to the field on time. Step aside.

7. Check Your Email Always check your email before leaving for a game. Come some sleeting Sunday morning in mid-January you really don't want to miss a certain two word email: "game cancelled".

8. Learn the 'offside' rule. No, really.

9. Invest In a GPS for “Away” Games However this device is only helpful if you enter the correct address. You do not want to find out the hard way that there's a Bell Park in Ladner... and another one in Langley.

10. Don't Plan on Getting Things Done During the Game You might imagine that game times will be a great opportunity to edit a paper, clean out your purse and such, but don't bother. The sight of your child charging up and down the field, eventually in the right direction, is strangely captivating and the array of parents on the sidelines always pleasant to chat with. These years fly by and for now, you're with the team.

Glaucoma affects the peripheral vision first, having no symptoms until later stages. There is no prevention for glaucoma, so regular eye exams are important for early detection. Glaucoma can be managed by daily eye medications and, if not detected early, it may require surgery.AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (ARMD): is the leading cause of age-related blindness worldwide. ARMD is characterized by blurred or distorted central vision that can lead to a loss of central vision. There is no cure for ARMD, but early detection and preventative measures can help delay or reduce vision loss. UV protection, healthy diet, no smoking and normal blood pressure are all factors that help prevent ARMD. DIABETIC RETINOPATHY: One-third of people with diabetes will eventually develop this. Early retinopathy changes are often without symptoms, but can be detected during eye exams. Annual exams are important for maintaining healthy eyes or initiating early treatment. Diabetic retinopathy is treated with laser surgery.FLOATERS: appear as dark spots or lines that move with your eye movement. Symptoms of new or increased floaters, decreased vision, or flashes of light warrant an immediate evaluation by an eye care professional.Optometric Services: Comprehensive eye exams, contact lens fitting and assessment, investigation/treatment of: reduced visual acuity, recurring headaches, dry eyes, pediatric and sports eye care, screening/monitoring for diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and glaucoma, consultations and efficient referrals for private cataract surgery and laser eye surgery.

A Vancouver landmark since 1982, Dragon & Phoenix is Vancouver’s best women’s designer and mainstream consignment clothing, accessories and collectibles store.

Connection to Dunbar? My husband grew up on 41st and Balaclava. Throughout our 35 year marriage, we have continued to have a strong connection through family to this neighbourhood. My husband’s grandfather owned Pyatt Confectionery’s from 1940-1965, located on Dunbar and 41st. I have two adult children and my daughter is now actively involved with the business. Dragon and Phoenix was located on East Boulevard between 46th and 47th Avenues in Kerrisdale for many years before I moved to this location in 2003. It feels as though moving my business from East Boulevard to here, was a natural choice due to our long-standing connection with the area. It has turned out to be a great move. The area has a wonderful sense of community, plenty of walk by traffic and many complimentary shops nearby.

What is your role in the store? This is my only business and I have always been actively involved in every aspect of the store. Together with my fabulous store manager, Georgia Brand, we screen and price all of the items that come in to the store. We are constantly educating ourselves on the latest styles and fashion trends and price checking on-line and in the popular retail outlets in the city. We price our products at approximately one third of the original retail price. The product that we are accepting is often not more than a season old and very much the clothing and accessories that you will find in your favourite retail stores.

What has changed since the store opened in 1982 besides the location and ownership? Is the formula the same? The formula hasn’t changed much over the years. It is a system that has worked well for me over the past 19 years. Our consignees like the fact that they don’t need to make an appointment to bring in their items, which makes it easy and convenient for them. They also tell us that they like that they can collect the money from their contract at anytime. We try our best to accommodate the needs of our consignees by making the process fast, easy and financially rewarding for them.

Something people may not know about the store? Over the years our customers have shown a preference for trendier more casual wear rather than buying more of the formal and business attire. I think this is a reflection of many women opting for a more casual and comfortable lifestyle. Our store caters to a wide spectrum of consumers, from teens wanting the latest styles at an affordable price to stylish senior women. Our customers appreciate the fact that we take the time and care to carefully select all of our items to provide them with excellent quality and the most current styles.

What makes the store unique and special? Besides the carefully chosen stock and great prices, I think what we are best known for is our honesty and long history of reliability. Over the years, my staff and I have developed friendships with a large portion of the women that have been our regular customers and consignees. Many of our customers come regularly to check out the new stock we put out daily, and often find themselves participating in the lively discussions that are always taking place. I feel like the store has evolved over time into a place where customers come to shop, but also come to enjoy the familiarity, conversation and friendship that is hard to find in most modern retail stores. It reminds me of an atmosphere that is reminiscent of the days back when my husband’s grandfather ran his small confectionary in the same Dunbar community. I’d like to thank all of our customers and consignees for their continued support over the years!

A Season of Thoughtfulnessby Janet Morris-Reade

We are heading into the official season of thoughtfulness. It’s a combination of the holiday spirit of November and December combined with the bettering-oneself-resolutions of January and February. This is the period when donations to charity are highest and people take time to think about how they can contribute to their community. Without doubt, Dunbar is already on the right track!

Case in point: the Dunbar Resident’s Association is run by what feels like an army of resident volunteers who create, publish and deliver a community newsletter; patrol the neighbourhood to ensure a safe and friendly environment; invest countless hours documenting our history and making it available to us; help us get in touch with our environment through Salmonberry Days; and send out email blasts that are both helpful and informative.

Our local schools, churches, and sports leagues rely on volunteers to keep their organizations running. Many merchants and business owners usually have some charity that they support on the side, which accounts for countless of volunteer hours, too. Perhaps our biggest challenge in Dunbar is not finding volunteers, but rather finding fresh volunteers to tag in and take over for those who are wearing themselves out.

Whether you live, work, or go to school here, it takes many people to make Dunbar a great community for us all. Thanks to everyone and keep up the good work!

When Dunbar residents Charlie and Fraser were asked what they wanted to do, their answer was “give back to their community”. Charlie, a tall silent type with a wonderful attention to detail and Fraser, a lover of planting “trees”, decided that tidying up around Dunbar Street would be a good thing to do.

Along with the encouragement of their support worker, Chad, and their families, the Dunbar Village Clean Team was born. A few hours every week you will see Charlie and Fraser in their black vests picking up trash and put-ting things in their place. When you see them out and about, please take a moment to say thank you to these selfless volunteers for helping make our environment more clean and beautiful.

Trick-or-Treat in Dunbar Village was a Howl! The streets were taken over by bumblebees and fairies at our first Trick-or-Treat on Dunbar event much to the surprise and delight of everyone there. Many little ghouls were out trick-or-treating for their very first time, shattering the cuteness meter to smithereens. Expecting a smaller crowd, merchants made several trips to Shoppers & Stong’s to stock up on some candy, and then even more candy. Mental note for next year: there are a lot of kids in Dunbar and, make sure to buy more candy!
