Explore Buildings A set of hands on architecture models and activities. Supported by National Architecture Week In addition to the regular programmes, Dulwich Picture Gallery celebrates buildings each June with special education events all week and a family weekend. Dulwich Picture Gallery is an independent gallery. It receives no central government funding. The Education Department is entirely dependent on generous donations from charitable trusts and grants. For the first time in its historyJohn Soane’s Dulwich PictureGallery is being looked at in anew way.

An understanding of buildingsand their local context is usuallyreserved for the professionalsrather than the general public.

New programmes explore howbuildings work and are designedto appeal to children, adults,families, and cannot fail to interestthe professionals.

Programmes include:• Architecture tours of the building• Architecture tours of the local area• Drawing architectural details

• Drawing perspective and symmetry

• Buildings in the Landscape,mixed media practical art studio sessions

• Building exploration workshopswith hands on models

The Internal Gallery SpaceDulwich Picture Gallery is turnedinside out. An intriguing “RachelWhiteread” style model shows theinternal spaces, and illustrates the cube and double cube basis of the Gallery.

Soane’s Alternative DesignsSoane designed 12 variations of Dulwich Picture Gallery.Hand painted building blocks can re-create all 11 alternatives.

Building HistoryMapping activities illustrate thechanging local built environmentfrom before the Gallery opened in1817 to the present day.

ConstructionMiniature clay bricks illustratethe complexities of bricklayingand bonding. Soane’s use ofbrick created an extraordinarybuilding, find out how.
