requested by a student may be denied for one or more of the following reasons: 1) Receiving instructor denies

admission in course, 2) Transfer school does not offer equivalent dual credit course. All transfer requests denied as

All students, including dual credit, are expected to meet academic standards for coursework completed at South Texas College. Students with a cumulative grade point average below 2.00 (C average) will be placed on academic probation, continued academic probation or academic suspension as appropriate. Semester and Cumulative GPA Calculation All grade points earned by a student, including developmental courses and the College Success course, will be included in the computation of the semester grade point average and cumulative grade point average. In the case of a repeated course, the last grade recorded will be used in the computation. The academic progress standards for students attending the College are as follows: Level of Academic Status GPA Criteria Good Standing Cumulative GPA is 2.00 or above Academic Probation Cumulative GPA has dropped below 2.00 Continued Academic Probation Previously on Academic Probation or Continued Academic

Probation and cumulative GPA is below 2.00, but current semester GPA is 2.00 or above

Academic Suspension Previously on Academic Probation or Continued Academic Probation and cumulative GPA is below 2.00 and current semester GPA is below 2.00

Academic Probation Academic Probation is a system of monitoring student grades in all South Texas College courses in order to identify students who are experiencing difficulty in making satisfactory progress. Academic Probation occurs at the end of any semester when a student's cumulative GPA drops below 2.00. Continued Academic Probation Continued Academic Probation is a system of monitoring student grades in all South Texas College courses for students placed on Academic Probation in order to identify students who continue to experience difficulty in making satisfactory progress. Continued Academic Probation occurs at the end of the semester following Academic Probation when a student's cumulative GPA remains below 2.00. Academic Suspension Academic Suspension is a system of forced interruption in attendance at the College in those instances where a student is unable to maintain satisfactory academic progress. Suspension occurs when the student who has previously been on Academic Probation or Continued Academic Probation and cumulative GPA is below 2.00 and current semester GPA is below 2.00. Academic suspension may last for one regular fall or spring semester. Students placed on academic suspension may enroll for summer sessions for the purpose of raising their cumulative GPA to the level required for good standing. Readmission after a Period of Suspension After a period of Academic Suspension, a student may be readmitted on academic probation. Before readmission under probationary status, the suspended student must report to Counseling and Student Disability Services for an academic counseling session to develop an Academic Improvement Plan. Students on Academic Suspension who raise their cumulative GPA to 2.00 or higher can be reinstated in good standing following application to the Office of Admissions and Records. Removal from suspension can be most effectively accomplished by re-enrolling for courses in which the student has a failing grade. If a student who has been suspended feels that unusual circumstances warrant a review, the student may provide a written appeal to the Academic Appeals Committee in care of the Counseling and Student Disability Services.

How can my dual enrollment courses

affect my financial aid?

Satisfactory Academic Progress

Federal regulations mandate that a student receiving financial assistance under Title IV programs must maintain satisfactory academic progress in

his/her course of study regardless of whether or not financial aid is awarded each semester. All students, including dual enrollment students,

must adhere to the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy to be eligible for financial aid upon enrolling as an entering freshman at South Texas

College. The requirements of the policy you should know include:

1. Maintaining an overall 2.0 GPA

2. Completing 67% of courses attempted cumulatively

3. Graduating within the Maximum Time Frame (MTF)

1. Maintain an overall 2.0 GPA

Once your grades have been calculated, you must make sure that your overall GPA is at or above a 2.0. That is the equivalent of a C average.

2. Complete 67% of Courses You Have Attempted Cumulatively

Use the table below as an example of the 67% rule. Failing grades, drops, withdrawals, and incompletes will affect your completion percentage.

If You Have Attempted…

67% You Must have Completed at least…

24 Credit Hrs 67 % 16 Credit Hrs

21 Credit Hrs 67 % 14 Credit Hrs

18 Credit Hrs 67 % 12 Credit Hrs

15 Credit Hrs 67 % 10 Credit Hrs

12 Credit Hrs 67 % 8 Credit Hrs

9 Credit Hrs 67 % 6 Credit Hrs

Passing/Earned Grades

If you receive a letter grade “A”, “B”, “C”, “D”, or “P”, they will be considered credit hours earned in favor of the 67% rule.

Non-passing/non-earned grade

If you receive a letter grade “F”, “W”, “WP”, “WF”, “DP”, “DF”, “IP”, or “I”, they will not be considered credit hours earned in favor of the 67% rule.

3. Graduate within the Maximum Time Frame (MTF)

This is the maximum amount of time a student has to complete their program of study. Students cannot exceed 1.5 times the number of credit

hours needed to complete their degree. To calculate your own max, look at your degree plan to see how many hours that degree requires. Then,

multiply that number by 1.5 and the result is your max.

MTF= Required hours to graduate from your degree x 1.5

Example: If your associate’s degree required that you take 60hrs to graduate… MTF= 60hrs x 1.5= 90hrs…your Maximum Time Frame is 90hrs.

Determine your Financial Aid Status Use the visual as a guide in learning about your financial aid status.

All students, with no previous college coursework, begin with their financial aid status in good standing.

If a student fails to meet one or both of the first two requirements in the Satisfactory Academic Progress policy, they will be placed on

warning status for the following semester. Students with a warning status may still receive financial aid.

If your status is warning and you meet both requirements the following semester, you will be placed back on good standing.

However, if your status was already warning and you fail to meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy the following semester, you will be placed on suspension. Students on suspension will not be eligible to receive financial aid unless they have successfully appealed (see below).

FAQ’s

What will happen if I drop a course?

Students who drop before the 12th

college class day (see Academic Calendar) will not be penalized. Students who drop a course after the 12th

college class day, risk not satisfying the 67% rule. Dropping after this date will result in receiving a “W” for that course and will not be considered

an earned credit for the 67% rule.

What will happen if I drop all my dual enrollment courses in a semester?

Students who drop all their courses after the 12th

college class day will face a lower completion percentage (see requirement #2). These courses

will be counted as attempted; however, they will not be counted as earned in favor of the 67% rule.

How do I get out of suspension or warning?

If you are on suspension and meet the first two requirements you will be placed on warning status the following semester. If you are on warning

status and meet the first two requirements, you will be placed back on good standing the following semester.

What will happen to my status if I skip a semester?

It will remain unchanged. If your status was warning, it will remain on warning. If your status was suspension, it will remain on suspension.

I am planning on attending STC next semester, but I am on suspension. Can I get Financial Aid?

If you are on Financial Aid suspension when you enroll as a regular student at STC, though you may qualify for financial aid, we will not be able to

release any of your funds unless you are able to satisfactorily complete the appeal process (see below).

What if I attend a different institution after graduating from high school? Please check with your prospective college or university.

Appeal Process

Students who fail to meet the policy because of unusual circumstances, such as serious illness, death in the family, accidents, etc., have the right to

appeal. If your Financial Aid status is Suspension upon enrolling as a regular student at South Texas College, you may submit an appeal.

MANUAL OF POLICY

Title Student Appeal of Course Grades 3312 Legal Authority Approval of the Board of Trustees Date Approved by Board Board Minute Order dated November 9, 1995

As Amended by Board Minute Order Dated July 20, 2006 As Amended by Board Minute Order Dated August 21, 2008

Students at South Texas College have the right to appeal academic grades which they consider manifestly unjust or erroneous. The primary responsibility for assigning grades in a course belongs to the faculty member, and in the absence of compelling evidence of discrimination, differential treatment, or procedural irregularities, the judgment of the faculty member responsible for the course must remain determinant. In the event of an appeal, the South Texas College Grade Appeal Process must be followed. Appeals reaching the final level of review will be heard by the STC Grade Appeal Committee. Procedures for appealing course grades are readily available in the Student Handbook and on the South Texas College web site. The decision of the STC Grade Appeal Committee is final and concludes the approved South Texas College grade appeal process.
