How would your son or daughter answer these questions?

• Am I self-motivated and self-disciplined?• Am I a problem solver/resolve issues on own?• Am I an individual or do I follow my friends?• Do I have good study habits?• Am I goal-directed?• Do I have good time management skills?• Can I communicate with adults seriously?

Page 10: Dual Credit Parent Information. High School Credit + College Credit AT THE SAME TIME What is Dual Credit?

What is College Readiness?• Habits of Mind- patterns of intellectual behavior that improve

college success. Are you curious? Are you a problem solver? Are you open to new ideas?

• Academic Skills- basic writing, reading, math, and research skills, as well as competence in analysis and evaluation.

• Academic Behavior- can’t be measured on an entrance exam, such as study skills, time management, note-taking, and communication with adults professionally.

• Conceptual Skills and Awareness- “College knowledge.” This encompasses teamwork, communication with others, college culture, or simply, navigating the system.

Too Much Too Soon!

• To WITHDRAW student must discuss this with parents and counselor

• Next, submit the DC Withdrawal Form to NCTC DC Coordinator or Admissions

• Student receives a grade of “W” on NCTC transcript.

• Simply changing high school schedule does NOT withdraw a student from a college class.

NCTC

Page 31: Dual Credit Parent Information. High School Credit + College Credit AT THE SAME TIME What is Dual Credit?

High School vs. College

Page 32: Dual Credit Parent Information. High School Credit + College Credit AT THE SAME TIME What is Dual Credit?

COLLEGE

• large amounts of material in short amount of time • Check the syllabus to answer questions concerning course. • College instructors expect students to contact them

• NCTC does have a mandatory attendance policy---an absence is an absence, regardless of the reason-----

ex. vacation, extra curricular activities -Students MUST contact instructors BEFORE they are absent for a school-related activity and late work may or may not be accepted, depending on the instructor’s policy. -College instructors are NOT required to follow a high school’s plan.

Instructors follow the NCTC calendar because college courses are required by state law to meet an allotted amount of time per semester.

Page 33: Dual Credit Parent Information. High School Credit + College Credit AT THE SAME TIME What is Dual Credit?

Helping Your College Student Prepare Them For What To Expect

• Every 1 hour in class = 2 hours at least out of class

-reading, studying, and completing assignments.

• College gives a tremendous amount of freedom.-No one knows whether they’re doing the assignments.

• Have the student print you a copy of the syllabus• Students do most of their learning on their own.• Students must be mature enough to contact their

instructors on their own if they have questions, problems or confused.

Page 34: Dual Credit Parent Information. High School Credit + College Credit AT THE SAME TIME What is Dual Credit?

Let Them Do It On Their Own• There are no parent conferences.

Communication regarding NCTC students is restricted due to FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act).

• Student MUST request an official transcript at the end of each semester to be sent to high school.

• Parents transition from advocate to supporter.

• Student success depends on the student’s responsibility.

• If you question your child’s readiness, consider allowing them additional years to reach a level of maturity that will award them a greater chance for success.
