– Numerous events, tributes and memorials tied to the approaching Veterans Day federal holiday on Monday, Nov. 11, are set to take place around the Coachella Valley and beyond in the coming days.

There are many ways to both enjoy the desert and pay your respects to our brave men and women who have served selflessly and have sacrificed in the name of

duty for our country. Herein, we highlight a few of the happenings, listed alphabetically by location.

In Chiriaco Summit, the General Patton Memorial Museum at 62-510 Chiriaco Road is celebrating its 25th anniversary on Monday, Nov. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The day’s activities officially get underway at 11 a.m. with a fly-by by Warbirds West. The keynote speaker will Helen Patton, granddaughter of Gen.

PALM SPRINGS – The final edition of the world-renowned Palm Springs Follies, “The Last Hurrah,” is underway. Vacationers and residents alike have enjoyed this special show of this special show for 23 years. And Riff Markowitz is a hilariously one-of-a kind emcee, always incorporating audience members into the act.

The dancers and singers range in age from 56 to 84 and they mesmerize their audience with a show that mimics much-younger entertainers. The costumes remind us of the Ziegfeld Follies days, when huge feathers and sequins were the norm. The female dancers, escorted by sharply dressed men, take the stage one by one to note their show business experience and (proudly) their ages.

The opening of the Christmas edition took place Nov. 1 to a packed theater; another edition will be introduced after the holidays. The beautiful sensational Susan Anton, known for both her beauty and great voice, is the guest headliner. Ventriloquist Brad Cummings and his sidekick, the prehistoric REX, who hatches from an egg, is particularly funny.

The finale of the show is always a tribute to America, with the U.S. flag waving and songs that give thanks to all our military branches of the service. PALM SPRINGS – The Desert Cancer Foundation held its Gift of Life Celebration with a Halloween party at the Jim Houston Estate in Palm Springs on Nov. 2. The presenting sponsor for this event was the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Desert Regional Medical Center. It was a spectacular evening, with fine wine and delectable food. The menu was chosen by host Jim Houston himself.

Silent and live auctions of exclusive fine, vintage and very rare wines were held. Donors of the wines chose from their own private wine cellars especially for this event. All proceeds went to the Cancer Foundation, and some wines sold in the hundreds of dollars per bottle to wine lovers for this cause.

Desert Cancer Foundation’s mission is to assist Coachella Valley residents that have cancer and are unable to get medical care because they are can’t afford insurance. It helps people of all ages with all types of cancers — partnering with doctors, hospitals, imaging centers and other facilities and professionals to provide quality healthcare. Twitter is Setting Markets All a-FlitterBy Kevin Powell

In one of the most anticipated initial public offerings (IPOs) all year long, Twitter is expected to commence trading on Thursday, Nov. 7. Estimates are for the stock to be priced from $23 to $25 a share.

The ultimate opening price of the stock will depend on demand. From all appearances, there are more buyers than stock available, so expect the stock to rise rapidly shortly after it opens for trading.

This has been the busiest year for IPOs since 2007, with 190 companies joining the exchanges this year. The most recent was last week, when The Container Store (containerstore.

com) nearly doubled on its first day of trading. It has been in business for 35 years, while Twitter has been around for six.

I have no doubt that Twitter is going to soar at the start. However, be careful of buying it in the near future. You have to be a client of one of the banks or brokerage houses that helped bring the stock to market in order to purchase it at the IPO price. Most of us don’t fall into that category, which means if we want to purchase the stock, we have to wait until it starts trading.

The irony in all this is that Twitter has never posted a profit since its launch. The company still must find a way to monetize its advertising. But many expect them to follow Facebook’s model, which has flourished over the past six months and has pushed that stock to all-time highs.

LinkedIn also at an all-time high trades for about 19 times their yearly revenues. Frighteningly, some analysts have already set huge upside price targets for Twitter ranging from $30 a share to $50 a share.

Many stocks in the market

don’t trade at a traditional valuation, and Twitter is certainly another that won’t.

It’s an exciting company and the future looks bright. There are hurdles that must be overcome. It’s also coming

to market at a time when the indexes are very high. Higher interest rates in 2014 may slow down the market’s growth rate and that could push the price back down. If you’re a Twitter fan, it might

pay off to wait a while before buying the stock.

The fundraiser will be held on Monday, Nov. 11, from 5-7 p.m. on the Zen Patio at Wang’s. The suggested door donation is $20. A silent auction and raffle will also take place to raise additional funds.

Twentynine Palms will host the Morongo Basin’s Veterans Day Tribute 2013. This is an annual event that alternates each year between Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms. The event takes place Monday, Nov. 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Veterans Park, next to City Hall, at 6136 Adobe Road.

The tribute will include guest speakers and static displays of law enforcement, fire department and military equipment, as well as music and entertainment. The Marine Sandpiper and the Marine Corps Color guard will open the ceremony at 11 a.m., followed by guest speakers including City Councilmember Jim Harris and Col. Jay Bargeron, 7th Marine Regiment, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center.

Big Hearts for Little Hearts Desert Guild is kicking off its 2013-14 season with the first of three annual Lunch and Learn Cooking Demonstrations benefiting Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital (LLUCH). The first event of the season will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Catalan Restaurant, 70026 Hwy. 111.

“I am always excited to see everyone participating in these fun and worthwhile

events benefiting Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital,” said Desert Guild President Joyce Engel. “This is an excellent opportunity for our Desert Guild to reacquaint themselves with current members, as well as meet potential new members in the community.”

Drew Davis, executive chef of Catalan Restaurant, will present a three-course menu for all guests to enjoy. He will demonstrate how to prepare the meals, and guests will be able to take recipes home

from the luncheon. “In the nine years that

we have been hosting these Lunch and Learn Cooking Demonstrat ions at area restaurants,” added Engel, “our guests always seem pleased to learn new skills and obtain new recipes they are able to take home and share with their families — all while learning valuable insight about the only dedicated pediatric hospital in the region. of life is “What happens after we die?” Science has not given us an answer to this question, but a new report from researchers at the Institute of Healthy Aging at University College, London, shows that scientists are figuring out exactly what happens at the time of death.

The researchers report that death is a slower process than previously perceived. Living organisms do not immediately switch from alive to dead all at once. Instead, the British study states that living cells shut down individually as a wave of cell-killing acid spreads across the body.

The study, published in the October 2013 issue of PLOS Biology, explains this by a detailed examination of the biological changes that take place in earthworms upon their deaths. Surprisingly, the study reported that these changes are the same in both earthworms and humans. Most notably, the dead worms took on a blue hue throughout their body. Scientists identified this eerie blue hue as anthranillic acid, and now claim that this material is responsible for ending all life at the cellular level.

David Gems, the leader of the study, explained the team’s findings. “We’ve identified a chemical pathway of self-destruction that propagates cell death in worms, which we see as this glowing blue fluorescence traveling through the body,” he said. “It’s like a blue grim reaper, tracking death as it spreads throughout the organism until all life is extinguished.

“Essentially, upon death, a few select cells secrete anthranillic acid as they shut down. This acid then targets nearby cells, which similarly secrete the acid before death. The chain reaction continues across the host body until every cell is dead.”

The eerie blue florescence, Gems and his University College colleagues learned, is caused by a cell death pathway which is dependent on calcium signaling. However, they also made the fascinating discovery that the death process can be stalled by interrupting the calcium signaling. While this cannot prevent death from natural cell deterioration caused by old age, death

induced by physical accidents, infections and other stresses can be delayed, the researchers found, by blocking the calcium signaling pathway.

“This suggests,” said Gems, “that aging causes death by a number of processes acting in parallel.”

Gems continued: “The findings cast doubt on the theory that aging is simply a consequence of an accumulation of molecular damage. We need to focus on the biological events that occur during aging and death to properly understand how we might be able to interrupt these processes.”

The report suggested that if scientists find a way to stop or suppress the acid’s activity within a host body, they may be able to develop new ways to prolong human life and even bring the recently dead back to life.

DESERT HOT SPRINGS – On Wednesday, Oct. 30, the local chapter of Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley held an anti-bullying rally. Posters and stories about bullying were displayed for all to observe and study.

DHS police personnel spoke about the detriments of bullying on individuals and on society, using volunteers in skits to demonstrate the stark statistic that 60 percent of bullies end up in prison.

Some high-schoolers performed a skit illustrating the terrible effects of bullying on one girl, who resorted to suicide to escape her life. It was a day of listening, looking and learning for all of the young attendees. (Photos by Bruce Montgomery)

DESERT HOT SPRINGS – Borrego Health celebrated the grand opening of its Community Health Center at 66675 Pierson Blvd. on Tuesday, Oct. 29. This long-awaited facility adds 18 exam rooms to local medical community and employs 50. The clinic will be able to serve about 500 people each week.

PALM DESERT – Desert Samaritans for Seniors will honor two outstanding charity supporters, (the late) Bob and Jo Pond, with the 23rd Annual Good Samaritan of the Year Award, at an afternoon cirque-type event at the Desert Springs Marriott Resort & Spa on Sunday, Nov. 17.

The Second Annual Golden Senior Award will be presented to Betty Francis of The Desert Sun. Mary Hansen- Faris will receive special recognition for her dedication to Desert Samaritans.

The event starts at 2 p.m., with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar available prior to the awards ceremony and entertainment.

The Miracle Springs Resort will host a single performance of an original, much-acclaimed play titled “Lush!” on Sunday, Nov. 10.

The two-act play, presented as a staged reading, relates the story of a forgotten American heroine: the first woman to join Alcoholics Anonymous. “Everyone knows about the two men who started AA,” said playwright-director Valerie-Jean (VJ) Hume. “In 1935, the thinking was that only men were ‘inebriates.’ AA was exclusively a guy thing for the first four years!”

But Marty Mann, a former socialite born into wealth and privilege in Chicago, wound up living on a park bench, homeless, alone… and drunk. How did she become “the First Lady of AA”? Her story paved the way for all other women in sobriety — including one of this nation’s First Ladies, Betty Ford.

Hume’s two-hour play about Mann, told with much laughter and a few tears, also seeks to answer the many questions, some paradoxical, raised by alcoholism, including: Why don’t they stop drinking when they see what it’s doing to them? Why do they relapse after finally getting sober? Is the disease inherited?

“Everybody knows someone who is an alcoholic,” said Hume. “It might be a friend, a co-worker, or someone dangling off a branch of your own family tree. So everyone can identify with the messages of this show, even non-alcoholics.”

A few years ago “Lush!” swept its category in the Desert Theatre League’s Desert Stars Awards, with six wins. It has been performed to standing ovations at the Indio Performing Arts Center, Michael’s House, The Tolerance Education Center, The ABC Club and the world-famous Betty Ford Center.

The cast includes Dean Apple as Bill W. and Ron Young as Dr. Bob Smith,” AA’s co-founders. Hume plays Marty Mann, and all three appear in various other character roles. Live music provided by talented local clarinetist Ted Pethes not only sets the mood, but identifies the exact year of the upcoming scene.

The Miracle Springs Resort, with its world-famous healing mineral waters, is located at 10625 Palm Drive, six miles north of I-10. Playgoers can come early for lunch at the award-winning Capri Restaurant or the Juice Bar, or stay for dinner after the show. The hotel will also offer a special Sunday night rate for stay-and-playgoers.

“We are so enthusiastic about this play, which has already helped so many people and is a first for our hotel,” said Reggie Bickford, manager of the Miracle Springs Resort.

Inc.” from Disney-Pixar.That 2001 animated film

reintroduced us to the little kid within and our associated childhood fears — populating

its story with colorful characters representing the monsters we once believed lurked under our beds.

The film was such a hit that it inspired its talented makers to create another film telling

the backstory of how our two favorite monsters — little green one-eyed Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal) and James P. “Sully” Sullivan (voiced by John Goodman) — first met. The awaited prequel, “Monsters

University,” was, well, a monster hit this past summer and is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.

Ever since he was a little monster, Mike dreamed of becoming a Scarer — and, like the best of them, he enrolls at Monsters University. Unfortunately, during his first semester, studious little Mike has problems with the oversized blue, furry Sully. They soon clash, with disastrous results for both of them. In no time their competitive spirits get them kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program by the order of Dean Hardscrabble (voiced by Helen Mirren).

To gain reinstatement, the two colorfu l r iva ls must enter a university competition and work together along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters. Can they put their egos aside for the benefit of their ragtag team?

Soon they all face frightful problems of their own. How they handle the monstrous tasks ahead spot l ights the value of self-discovery and teamwork.

Campus comedy abounds, and once again the animators at Pixar create a wide variety of monsters who are far more cuddly than creepy. Both the DVD and Combo Collector’s Edition come with audio commentary and a sweet animated short, “The Blue Umbrella” (about an evening commute in the pouring rain during two umbrellas fall in love).

The deluxe Collector’s Edition of “Monsters University” brims with even more bonus materials like Scare Games, “Campus Life” and “Music Appreciation” — a featurette about Randy Newman’s music, where we learn all about the scoring process for the film — and more.

“Monsters University” is rated G for good, clean, freaky cartoon fun.

RANCHO MIRAGE – Continuing in its tradition of celebrating stars of the stage, screen and television, in the 2013-14 season of “Luminary Luncheons,” Coachella Valley Repertory Theater (CVRep) will host one of the most prolific directors /choreographers and dancers of the 20th century, Tommy Tune, on Thursday, Nov. 14.

Sponsored by Acqua Pazza and Lulu California Bistros, the delicious catered lunch begins at noon and will be followed by an “Inside the Actors Studio”-style Q&A session hosted by local TV/radio host and musician Don Martin.

Tune is marking his 50th year in show business performing his latest work across the country, “Steps in Time, A Broadway Biography in Song and Dance.” A native Texan, the 6’6.5”-tall Tune began his career as a dancer on Broadway, but would soon step out of the chorus and into a principal role in the musical, “Seesaw.”

Tune has won nine Tony Awards: in 1974, as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Musical), for “Seesaw”; in 1980, as Best Choreographer (with collaborator Thommie Walsh) for “A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine”; in 1982, as Best Director (Musical) for “Nine”; in

1983, as Best Actor (Musical) and Best Choreographer (also shared with Walsh) for “My One and Only”; in 1990, as Best Director (Musical) and Best Choreographer, for “Grand Hotel, The Musical”; and in 1991, as Best Director (Musical) and Best Choreographer for “The Will Rogers Follies.”

In the run for board of directors of the Mission Springs Water District, both incumbents — Nancy Wright, with 31.46 percent of the vote, and Jeff Bowman, with 25.52 percent — retained their

seats. Malcolm McLean and Mary Jane Sanchez-Fulton trailed in virtual unison at 21.57 and 21.46 percent, respectively.

In Palm Springs, with 100 percent of precincts reporting, the city council — with two seats up for grabs — remained status quo. Incumbent Ginny Foat registered 33.95 percent of the votes, incumbent Chris Mills 33.25 percent, Judy Deetrack 20.29 percent and Jeffrey Nichols 12.50 percent.

The contest for three seats on the board of directors of the Desert Water Agency found Pat Oygar with 30.44

percent of the votes, Jim Cioffi with 28.49 percent, Joe Stuart with 24.58 percent and Michael Paduano with 16.50 percent.

Palm Springs Measure B, which will place taxes on the city’s three legal medicinal marijuana dispensaries, passed by a wide margin: 66.89 percent to 33.11 percent.

By 10:30 p.m., nearly about 37,000 ballots had been counted and posted. A final count wasn’t expected until midnight. Provisional ballots were expected to be counted several days later.

Eakes, best known for her turns on two of daytime television’s top soap operas, “All My Children” and “The Bold and the Beautiful,” moves to the stage in “Turn the Page” — a one-time performance at the Annenberg Theater this Friday, Nov. 8.

While her Emmy-nominated daytime work has made her an afternoon living room staple for nearly 15 years, Eakes has other impressive credits — with guest appearances on such shows as “Cheers,” “Falcon Crest,” “Full House” and “Matlock.” Her resume includes the feature films “Choosing Mathias” and

“Charlie’s War,” as well as stage work in “Love Letters” and the touring version of “Cinderella.”

A vocalist since childhood, Eakes made her debut in the all-girl band Big Trouble, which was mentored by Grammy-winning disco era legend Giorgio Moroder. Her 1998 solo album debut “Here and Now” mixed country-western and bluegrass. With “Something Beautiful” in 2005, Eakes added sultry jazz to her repertoire.

SKY VALLEY - Bernadette Schwenn, 64, a resident of Fan Canyon in Sky Valley, was arrested on Monday, July 1 on charges of animal cruelty. Schwenn lives in a makeshift shanty with no water, no electricity and a pack of Queensland Heeler dogs.

Last April, Kitty Pallesen, an animal advocate and writer received a call saying something

may have happened to the woman living in Fan Canyon and that her dogs needed help.

“One night a friend of Schwenn’s stopped by with a jug of water. He had not talked to her, did not know where she was nor had any contact information for her. Before he left, he said he did not understand why something had not been done a long time ago about the situation with the dogs, and that over the years

PALM SPRINGS – The U.S. Supreme Court handed down a historic ruling on Wednesday, Jun. 26 to grant same sex marriages across the nation. In their ruling on DOMA and California’s Proposition 8, the justices overturned a previous lower court ruling which declared same sex marriage unconstitutional.

Within minutes of the landmark ruling, local hoteliers and wedding planners scrambled to promote Palm Springs as a premiere wedding destination.

“The Supreme Court’s

historic action today overturning DOMA and dismissing the appeal of California’s Proposition 8, clearing the way for same-sex marriage in our state is a huge victory for the LGBT community. This is about equal rights and I

recognized that we are all the same,” said Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet.

“My husband Christopher and I look forward to same-sex weddings commencing again in the state of California – and rest assured the City of Palm Springs will continue to be a destination committed to celebrating the

institution of marriage, both heterosexual and same-sex,” Pougnet said in a prepared statement

“Riverside County is prepared to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and record their marriages immediately after the anticipated direction is received from the state and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Hopefully that day will be here soon,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit.

Emin Bernd Alihodic was born on July 21, 1951 in Siegen, Germany and immigrated to the United States sometime in the late 1980s. Alihodic left behind two children and an ex-wife. His son, Jens (Alihodic) Luschnt, 35, came to Palm Springs on Monday, Aug. 12 to search for his biological father with only a

newspaper article describing how his dad was rescued twice off Mount San Jacinto on Feb. 9, 2009 and then again on May 13, 2010.

Jens, who speaks little or no English, was adopted by his step-father at the age of 10 and only knows a little about his biological father from stories his mother told him through the years.

“I’d like to know more

about him. How’s he been living all these years,” the younger Alihodic said through a German/English interpreter.

Jens said he started looking for his father about a year and a half ago after meeting the

own family soon and through her urging, they traveled to Palm Springs to search for his biological father.

what has been a football season filled with snapped streaks in the Desert Valley League (DVL), the Cathedral City High School Lions (3-1 DVL, 8-1 overall) had a chance to end the league’s longest win streak last Friday at Cathedral City High School.

The La Quinta High School Blackhawks (3-1 DVL, 6-3 overall), owners of an incredible 13-game, 13-year winning streak against the Lions, went into “The Jungle” looking to extend their winning streak.

However, with only one loss on their record, and an offense averaging 33.3 points a game, the Lions entered the matchup against the Blackhawks with the best, and most evenly matched, team they have fielded in over a decade.

Three weeks ago, no one could have predicted that allowing Palm Desert High Aztec running back Trae Riek to run for an unbelievable 465 yards, would, in fact, be a blessing in disguise for the Lions’ defense.

Riek’s historic game sent a clear message to Lions’ Head Coach Richard Lee. If the Lions are going to win a DVL title, then allowing 450-plus yards per game from one opposing running back is not going to get them there. Coach Lee’s defense was going to need some tweaking.

Now, three weeks later, the Lions defense found itself paired up against the Blackhawks — the league’s leading rushing team, averaging a hair over 300

yards per game. If the Lions had any hopes

in snapping the streak, it was no secret that they were going to have to limit the production of Blackhawks star receiver-turned-running back Vincent Guzman.

With another chance to defend an elite running back, the Lions’ defense had an opportunity to redeem its half-hearted performance against Riek and the Aztecs.

Guzman, who averages 131.5 rushing yards a game and is coming off of a 253-yard performance in his last game, is supported by alternate running backs Darius Griffin and Chris “Turbo” Rom-Turibio. Together, their three-headed monster of a running game has accounted for 20 of the team’s 34 touchdowns. Only 11 Blackhawks touchdowns have come from passes.

With these facts in mind, Coach Lee’s defensive game plan was obvious: clog the holes and force the young Blackhawks’ quarterback Michael Avina to do what he has not been forced to do all season — throw the ball. From the Blackhawks’ first possession of the game, the Lions’ game plan looked viable.

After gaining only 10 yards in their first seven plays, the Blackhawks seemed a bit discouraged by their lack of immediate offensive production on their first possession. The Blackhawks projected defeat and they hadn’t even given up any points.

Midway through the first

quarter, the Lions’ offense finally took advantage of the Blackhawks’ offensive inability to move the ball. Lions junior quarterback Davin Lile took it upon himself to take the game over with his legs: his two long rushing touchdowns in the first quarter propelled the team to the early two-touchdown lead.

By the end of the first half, the score was 21-7 in favor of the Lions. With the Blackhawks’ uncharacteristic inability to produce on the offensive end,

it appeared the game had been decided.

The Lions dominated the Blackhawks in the second half as much as they did in the first half. Two third- quarter Lions touchdowns — a 40-yard catch from star receiver James Rodriguez and a 40-plus-yard run from running back Orlando Wallace — put the game out of reach for the Blackhawks.

T h e L i o n s ’ offense was working on all cylinders, but their tight, stingy defense was what set them apart.

Guzman, one of the league’s best running backs, scored a running touchdown in the first quarter to try and get the Blackhawks back in the game. At the start of the fourth quarter, Guzman would catch one more touchdown, but unfortunately for the Blackhawks, his last score came when the lead was insurmountable.

Despite his two touchdowns, the Lions were able to hold Guzman to 130 yards running on 30 carries — his lowest totals since his first game playing running back. Additionally, the Blackhawks only ran for 160 total yards; that’s almost half as much as their 300 average.

After 13 years, the Lions finally ended the Blackhawks’ amazing run.

With one game left on the schedule, the Lions are now

positioned to clinch their first DVL title in over a decade. If the Lions can defeat the former defending champion Palm Springs High Indians this Friday, they will be DVL co-champions — under one condition.

The Blackhawks have to defeat the DVLs’ only undefeated team, the Aztecs. If the Aztecs win, they will be the

sole champions of the DVL. Twisting matters further, if the Lions and the Blackhawks win this Friday, the Aztecs,

Samaritans SPCA will hold its 13th annual Walk for the Animals & Pet Expo on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Sunrise Park. The event raises money to feed, shelter, rescue and provide veterinary care for animals in need.This year, Animal Samaritans welcomes several Marines and their canine warriors from the Marine Corps base in nearby 29 Palms.

The veterans will share touching stories of serving side by side with dogs on the battlefield, the roles they fill, and the bond between soldiers and combat dogs. In addition, Sherri Waters from Wounded Warriors, a nonprofit organization that trains and matches therapy dogs with veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress, will be at the event to discuss her work and share inspiring stories of

hope and healing. Following the optional one-mile walk through and around Sunrise Park, pet lovers will enjoy more than 30 pet-related vendors, including several local animal shelters with pets for adoption and food vendors — such as The Cowboy Way, Tootie’s Barbecue and Grandpa’s Kettle Corn. There will be a Frisbee dog performance, a Flyball dog performance, and demonstrations from the U.S. Marines canine unit

and Indio Police K9 unit. Animal Samaritans will also offer affordable pet vaccinations and microchipping starting at 9:30 a.m. Guests are reminded to bring cash for great food and great raffle prizes that include a new beach cruiser bicycle, big screen TV and deluxe pet package.Animal Samaritans will also honor 10 student finalists from their “Kindness to Animals” Student Art Contest, which was open to local

fourth through eighth graders. At noon, Animal Samaritans will call the finalist on stage and announce the winning artists. The top artist from elementary school (grades four and five) will receive four free passes to Disneyland, and the top artist from junior high school (grades six, seven and eight) will receive four free passes to Six Flags Magic Mountain. Animal Samaritans SPCA, founded in 1978, is a non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of animals and people. Programs in place to save the lives of healthy and treatable animals include prevention through humane education, low-cost and no-cost spay / neuter, low-cost vaccinations and low-cost dental care.Registration kicks off at 8 a.m. and is free, but donations are encouraged. Close to 100 pet lovers have already preregistered online, and Animal Samaritans expects that an additional 900 attendees will register the day of the event. KESQ TV’s morning news anchor Jeff Stahl will welcome guests and begin the program at 9 a.m. Shortly after, Rev. Dr. Maxine Kaye will hold a brief Blessing of the Animals ceremony.
