PALM SPRINGS – The final edition of the world-renowned Palm Springs Follies, “The Last Hurrah,” is underway. Vacationers and residents alike have enjoyed this special show of this special show for 23 years. And Riff Markowitz is a hilariously one-of-a kind emcee, always incorporating audience members into the act.

The dancers and singers range in age from 56 to 84 and they mesmerize their audience with a show that mimics much-younger entertainers. The costumes remind us of the Ziegfeld Follies days, when huge feathers and sequins were the norm. The female dancers, escorted by sharply dressed men, take the stage one by one to note their show business experience and (proudly) their ages.

The opening of the Christmas edition took place Nov. 1 to a packed theater; another edition will be introduced after the holidays. The beautiful sensational Susan Anton, known for both her beauty and great voice, is the guest headliner. Ventriloquist Brad Cummings and his sidekick, the prehistoric REX, who hatches from an egg, is particularly funny.

The finale of the show is always a tribute to America, with the U.S. flag waving and songs that give thanks to all our military branches of the service. And that’s especially appropriate for this Veterans Day Weekend. Left photo top: Riff Markowitz. PALM SPRINGS – The Desert Cancer Foundation held its Gift of Life Celebration with a Halloween party at the Jim Houston Estate in Palm Springs on Nov. 2. The presenting sponsor for this event was the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Desert Regional Medical Center. It was a spectacular evening, with fine wine and delectable food. The menu was chosen by host Jim Houston himself.

Silent and live auctions of exclusive fine, vintage and very rare wines were held. Donors of the wines chose from their own private wine cellars especially for this event. All proceeds went to the Cancer Foundation, and some wines sold in the hundreds of dollars per bottle to wine lovers for this cause.

Desert Cancer Foundation’s mission is to assist Coachella Valley residents that have cancer and are unable to get medical care because they are can’t afford insurance. It helps people of all ages with all types of cancers — partnering with doctors, hospitals, imaging centers and other facilities and professionals to provide quality healthcare. Jessup Auto Plaza Guns Motor for 75thBy Larry Jameson

CATHEDRAL CITY – Jessup Auto Plaza invites Coachella Valley residents to its 75th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday, Nov. 10. The Jessup Family has a day of family fun planned, including a Classic Car Show at its Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC dealership sponsored by the Palm Springs Corvette Club.

“The 75th anniversary of our dealership is something we’re very proud to be celebrating this year,” said General Manager Dan Jessup. “On November

10th, we’re also celebrating some of the amazing classic cars that have been part of our heritage along the way.”

The day kicks off with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Palm Springs Lions Club. All day, vintage Chevy, Cadillac, Buick, GMC, Pontiac and Oldsmobiles will be on display as the heart of the event — with awards given to Fan Favorite, Best of Show and Top Flight by Make. Additional activities include a barbeque, beverages, live music and a giant bouncer house / obstacle course

for the kids.“We hope to see new faces

and old alike come out to the dealership,” said Jessup. “The communities of Cathedral City, Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley as a whole have been an integral part of our family’s business since the start. It’ll be nice to say thanks to everyone, have some amazing food and drink from Fisherman’s Market & Grill and enjoy some classic cars.”

Since 1938, Jessup Auto Plaza has been providing automotive sales, service,

and parts to communities throughout the Coachella Valley. Located in the Cathedral City Auto Center, Jessup offers Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and GM Certified Pre-Owned vehicles and is the only dealership in the Coachella Valley with an on-site auto body and collision center.

The Jessup Auto Plaza Classic Car Show runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 68-111 E. Palm Canyon Drive in the Cathedral City Auto Center. For more info, visit jessupautoplaza.com.

Twitter is Setting Markets All a-FlitterBy Kevin Powell

In one of the most anticipated initial public offerings (IPOs) all year long, Twitter is expected to commence trading on Thursday, Nov. 7. Estimates are for the stock to be priced from $23 to $25 a share.

The ultimate opening price of the stock will depend on demand. From all appearances, there are more buyers than stock available, so expect the stock to rise rapidly shortly after it opens for trading.

This has been the busiest year for IPOs since 2007, with 190 companies joining the exchanges this year. The most recent was last week, when The Container Store (containerstore.

com) nearly doubled on its first day of trading. It has been in business for 35 years, while Twitter has been around for six.

I have no doubt that Twitter is going to soar at the start. However, be careful of buying it in the near future. You have to be a client of one of the banks or brokerage houses that helped bring the stock to market in order to purchase it at the IPO price. Most of us don’t fall into that category, which means if we want to purchase the stock, we have to wait until it starts trading.

The irony in all this is that Twitter has never posted a profit since its launch. The company still must find a way to monetize its advertising. But many expect them to follow Facebook’s model, which has flourished over the past six months and has pushed that stock to all-time highs.

LinkedIn also at an all-time high trades for about 19 times their yearly revenues. Frighteningly, some analysts have already set huge upside price targets for Twitter ranging from $30 a share to $50 a share.

Many stocks in the market

don’t trade at a traditional valuation, and Twitter is certainly another that won’t.

It’s an exciting company and the future looks bright. There are hurdles that must be overcome. It’s also coming

to market at a time when the indexes are very high. Higher interest rates in 2014 may slow down the market’s growth rate and that could push the price back down. If you’re a Twitter fan, it might

pay off to wait a while before buying the stock.

Big Hearts for Little Hearts Desert Guild is kicking off its 2013-14 season with the first of three annual Lunch and Learn Cooking Demonstrations benefiting Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital (LLUCH). The first event of the season will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Catalan Restaurant, 70026 Hwy. 111.

“I am always excited to see everyone participating in these fun and worthwhile

events benefiting Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital,” said Desert Guild President Joyce Engel. “This is an excellent opportunity for our Desert Guild to reacquaint themselves with current members, as well as meet potential new members in the community.”

Drew Davis, executive chef of Catalan Restaurant, will present a three-course menu for all guests to enjoy. He will demonstrate how to prepare the meals, and guests will be able to take recipes home

from the luncheon. “In the nine years that

we have been hosting these Lunch and Learn Cooking Demonstrat ions at area restaurants,” added Engel, “our guests always seem pleased to learn new skills and obtain new recipes they are able to take home and share with their families — all while learning valuable insight about the only dedicated pediatric hospital in the region. Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital serves children living in the Coachella Valley who require critical care that is unavailable locally.”

To complete the season, there will be two additional Lunch and Learn Cooking

Demonstrat ions held on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Vintage Country Club in Indian Wells, and on Wednesday, March 19, at The Club at Morningside in Rancho Mirage.

The Big Heart for Little Hearts Desert Guild was founded in 2002 to serve the community and its children through action and leadership while emphasizing children’s healthcare needs. The Desert Guild is committed to supporting the children at LLUCH by developing projects that address the critical needs of hospitalized children and their families. Since the Desert Guild began, other guilds have developed in communities served by LLUCH. The Desert Guild is

focused on raising funds to ensure critical medical care for the children of the Coachella Valley.

The Nov. 13 lunch starts at 11 a.m. Tickets for the Lunch and Learn Cooking Demonstrations are $75 for Desert Guild members and $90 for non-members. Due to limited seating, reservations can only be held with accompanying payment. For more info about the Lunch and Learn Cooking Demonstrations, please contact Josh Zahid at 909-558-5384.

By Art Kunkin (Mr. Life Extension)One of the great mysteries

of life is “What happens after we die?” Science has not given us an answer to this question, but a new report from researchers at the Institute of Healthy Aging at University College, London, shows that scientists are figuring out exactly what happens at the time of death.

The researchers report that death is a slower process than previously perceived. Living organisms do not immediately switch from alive to dead all at once. Instead, the British study states that living cells shut down individually as a wave of cell-killing acid spreads across the body.

The study, published in the October 2013 issue of PLOS Biology, explains this by a detailed examination of the biological changes that take place in earthworms upon their deaths. Surprisingly, the study reported that these changes are the same in both earthworms and humans. Most notably, the dead worms took on a blue hue throughout their body. Scientists identified this eerie blue hue as anthranillic acid, and now claim that this material is responsible for ending all life at the cellular level.

David Gems, the leader of the study, explained the team’s findings. “We’ve identified a chemical pathway of self-destruction that propagates cell death in worms, which we see as this glowing blue fluorescence traveling through the body,” he said. “It’s like a blue grim reaper, tracking death as it spreads throughout the organism until all life is extinguished.

“Essentially, upon death, a few select cells secrete anthranillic acid as they shut down. This acid then targets nearby cells, which similarly secrete the acid before death. The chain reaction continues across the host body until every cell is dead.”

The eerie blue florescence, Gems and his University College colleagues learned, is caused by a cell death pathway which is dependent on calcium signaling. However, they also made the fascinating discovery that the death process can be stalled by interrupting the calcium signaling. While this cannot prevent death from natural cell deterioration caused by old age, death

induced by physical accidents, infections and other stresses can be delayed, the researchers found, by blocking the calcium signaling pathway.

“This suggests,” said Gems, “that aging causes death by a number of processes acting in parallel.”

Gems continued: “The findings cast doubt on the theory that aging is simply a consequence of an accumulation of molecular damage. We need to focus on the biological events that occur during aging and death to properly understand how we might be able to interrupt these processes.”

The report suggested that if scientists find a way to stop or suppress the acid’s activity within a host body, they may be able to develop new ways to prolong human life and even bring the recently dead back to life.

Friday, Nov. 1, the doors officially open to Draper’s & Damon’s new Country Club Village boutique.

Local shoppers are the first to experience the national retailer’s new “classic timeless elegance” store concept. Conceived and executed entirely by Draper’s & Damon’s in-store team of personal shoppers, sales staff and managers, whose passion for the store’s beautiful desert location informed both the store’s interior design and its expanded apparel and accessories collections, the flagship store’s new retail concept is a major milestone for the brand, which also just redesigned and relaunched its Web presence with a new aesthetic.

Serving fashionable women who value sophistication, comfort and quality craftsmanship, Draper’s & Damon’s began in 1927 as a purveyor of “smart things to wear” with its Draper’s Studio of Modes in Pasadena. Today, the retailer continues to honor founder Virginia Draper’s commitment to the very best in customer service while exploring new fashion trends for its loyal clientele. In fact, the company’s own in-house designers create many of its best-selling styles, often incorporating customer feedback and personal requests into their fashion and accessories designs.

“Our expanded fashion and accessories collections really fit the active Desert lifestyle —

from easy-care casual wear to beautiful day wear to gorgeous social wear,” said Draper’s & Damon’s CEO, Naomi Langbecker, a Desert resident.

Langbecker expects her Desert customers will be thrilled with the store’s elegant new shopping atmosphere and in-store amenities, including a stunning 100-piece chandelier, spacious fitting rooms, a beautifully appointed and easy-to-navigate floor space and artfully displayed clothing and accessories.

“We are excited to introduce our new Country Club Village shopping experience to our Desert customers,” said Langbecker, who has been with Draper’s and Damon’s since 2009. “I shop the stores myself quite frequently, and I’m always impressed by our dedicated in-store teams. Their one-on-one attention and personalized

fashion advice really does make shopping easy and enjoyable!”

Headquartered in Irvine, Draper’s & Damon’s is an 86 year-old retail brand, with 29 stores across the country, a thriving online boutique and an annual catalogue circulation of over 30 million. Draper’s & Damon’s is a part of the Orchard Brands family of 15 boutique catalogue brands, dedicated to serving active lifestyles of the 50-plus market. Visit online at drapers.com.

Country Club Village, the address of Draper’s & Damon’s, is a 10-acre upscale shopping center located at the southwest corner of Monterey Avenue and Country Club Drive. It is anchored by Albertsons and includes such tenants as Starbuck’s Coffee, Subway, Mirage Dental, Better Nails, Help U Hear, Goody’s Cafe, Golden Spoon Yogurt and Shanghai Inn.

By Frieda NooneDESERT HOT SPRINGS –

The Miracle Springs Resort will host a single performance of an original, much-acclaimed play titled “Lush!” on Sunday, Nov. 10.

The two-act play, presented as a staged reading, relates the story of a forgotten American heroine: the first woman to join Alcoholics Anonymous. “Everyone knows about the two men who started AA,” said playwright-director Valerie-Jean (VJ) Hume. “In 1935, the thinking was that only men were ‘inebriates.’ AA was exclusively a guy thing for the first four years!”

But Marty Mann, a former socialite born into wealth and privilege in Chicago, wound up living on a park bench, homeless, alone… and drunk. How did she become “the First Lady of AA”? Her story paved the way for all other women in sobriety — including one of this nation’s First Ladies, Betty Ford.

Hume’s two-hour play about Mann, told with much laughter and a few tears, also seeks to answer the many questions, some paradoxical, raised by alcoholism, including: Why don’t they stop drinking when they see what it’s doing to them? Why do they relapse after finally getting sober? Is the disease inherited?

“Everybody knows someone who is an alcoholic,” said Hume. “It might be a friend, a co-worker, or someone dangling off a branch of your own family tree. So everyone can identify with the messages of this show, even non-alcoholics.”

A few years ago “Lush!” swept its category in the Desert Theatre League’s Desert Stars Awards, with six wins. It has been performed to standing ovations at the Indio Performing Arts Center, Michael’s House, The Tolerance Education Center, The ABC Club and the world-famous Betty Ford Center.

The cast includes Dean Apple as Bill W. and Ron Young as Dr. Bob Smith,” AA’s co-founders. Hume plays Marty Mann, and all three appear in various other character roles. Live music provided by talented local clarinetist Ted Pethes not only sets the mood, but identifies the exact year of the upcoming scene.

The Miracle Springs Resort, with its world-famous healing mineral waters, is located at 10625 Palm Drive, six miles north of I-10. Playgoers can come early for lunch at the award-winning Capri Restaurant or the Juice Bar, or stay for dinner after the show. The hotel will also offer a special Sunday night rate for stay-and-playgoers.

“We are so enthusiastic about this play, which has already helped so many people and is a first for our hotel,” said Reggie Bickford, manager of the Miracle Springs Resort.

Tickets to the 2 p.m. performance are $10 and reservations may be made with “Stanley” at the front desk, 760-251-6000.

By Theda Kleinhans ReichmanIt all began with “Monsters,

Inc.” from Disney-Pixar.That 2001 animated film

reintroduced us to the little kid within and our associated childhood fears — populating

its story with colorful characters representing the monsters we once believed lurked under our beds.

The film was such a hit that it inspired its talented makers to create another film telling

the backstory of how our two favorite monsters — little green one-eyed Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal) and James P. “Sully” Sullivan (voiced by John Goodman) — first met. The awaited prequel, “Monsters

University,” was, well, a monster hit this past summer and is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.

Ever since he was a little monster, Mike dreamed of becoming a Scarer — and, like the best of them, he enrolls at Monsters University. Unfortunately, during his first semester, studious little Mike has problems with the oversized blue, furry Sully. They soon clash, with disastrous results for both of them. In no time their competitive spirits get them kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program by the order of Dean Hardscrabble (voiced by Helen Mirren).

To gain reinstatement, the two colorfu l r iva ls must enter a university competition and work together along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters. Can they put their egos aside for the benefit of their ragtag team?

Soon they all face frightful problems of their own. How they handle the monstrous tasks ahead spot l ights the value of self-discovery and teamwork.

Campus comedy abounds, and once again the animators at Pixar create a wide variety of monsters who are far more cuddly than creepy. Both the DVD and Combo Collector’s Edition come with audio commentary and a sweet animated short, “The Blue Umbrella” (about an evening commute in the pouring rain during two umbrellas fall in love).

The deluxe Collector’s Edition of “Monsters University” brims with even more bonus materials like Scare Games, “Campus Life” and “Music Appreciation” — a featurette about Randy Newman’s music, where we learn all about the scoring process for the film — and more.

“Monsters University” is rated G for good, clean, freaky cartoon fun.

FRODO Frodo, at age two, is a very Weimaraner mix who has been at Save A Pet his whole life. By Robert KinslerNew albums from singer-

songwriter-guitarist Tommy Keene, the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Heathens have arrived to enhance your sound environment this week.

Artist: Tommy KeeneTitle: Excitement at Your Feet (Second Motion Records)Listen if you enjoy: Elvis Costello, Matthew Sweet, Paul Westerberg

There are few things more fun for an established artist than reworking material from some of their own heroes on a collection that does the original work justice. Such is result on Tommy Keene’s

10th official studio album, the wonderful “Excitement at Your Feet.” The ambitious collection features Keene covering mostly obscure gems such as Guided by Voices’ “Choking Tara,” a dreamy take on television’s “Guiding Light,” and an intoxicating vocal trip through “Ride on Baby” by the Rolling Stones. The biggest surprise on the 11-track disc is also one of the most beautiful — a gorgeous interpretation of the Bee Gees’ “I Laugh in Your Face.” Info: secondmotionrecords.com.

Artist: Jimi Hendrix ExperienceTitle: Miami Pop Festival (Sony Legacy)Listen if you enjoy: Jimi

Hendrix, Ten Years AfterReleased the same day

(Nov. 5) as the outstanding new American Masters documentary “Jimi Hendrix: Hear My Train a Comin’” being featured on PBS-TV this month, the newly-issued “Miami Pop Festival” is an important recording that captured Hendrix and company at the first major rock festival staged on the East Coast — the May 1968 Miami Pop Festival. Opening with a blistering version of “Hey Joe,” that starts slowly but builds to a roar, the selection of classics —

delivered with a superb mix of rock attack and virtuoso skill — includes “Foxey Lady” and “Fire.” By the time Hendrix closed the festival with a mighty version of “Purple Haze,” it was clear the future of rock would never be the same. This concert marked the first time that the instrumental “Tax Free” and the freewheeling “Hear My Train a Comin’” were ever performed live. Info: jimihendrix.com.

Artist: Band of HeathensTitle: Sunday Morning Record (BOH Records)Listen if you enjoy: I See Hawks in L.A., The Jayhawks, Gram Parsons

From the playful Southern rocker “Miss My Life” to the Gram Parsons-echoing folk ballad “Girl with Indigo Eyes,” there are layers of lush and rewarding songcraft delivered by the Austin, Texas-based Band of Heathens on “Sunday Morning Record.” With founding singer-guitarists Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist still firmly at the helm, the quartet’s masterful delivery of roots rock encompasses authentic country draped in irresistible harmonies (“Shotgun”), affecting ballads (“Caroline Williams”) and blues-baked rock ‘n’ roll (“Shake the Foundation”). Eakes, best known for her turns on two of daytime television’s top soap operas, “All My Children” and “The Bold and the Beautiful,” moves to the stage in “Turn the Page” — a one-time performance at the Annenberg Theater this Friday, Nov. 8.

While her Emmy-nominated daytime work has made her an afternoon living room staple for nearly 15 years, Eakes has other impressive credits — with guest appearances on such shows as “Cheers,” “Falcon Crest,” “Full House” and “Matlock.” Her resume includes the feature films “Choosing Mathias” and

“Charlie’s War,” as well as stage work in “Love Letters” and the touring version of “Cinderella.”

A vocalist since childhood, Eakes made her debut in the all-girl band Big Trouble, which was mentored by Grammy-winning disco era legend Giorgio Moroder. Her 1998 solo album debut “Here and Now” mixed country-western and bluegrass. With “Something Beautiful” in 2005, Eakes added sultry jazz to her repertoire.

“Turn the Page” starts at 8 p.m. at the Annenberg Theater, located in the Palm Springs Art Museum, 101 N. Museum Drive. For tickets, visit reactionshows.com or call 760.322.3554.

Janet Napolitano as New UC PresidentOAKLAND - In response to

the news that Homeland Security Secretary and former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano will become the new President of the University of California system, Kathryn Lybarger, President of the university’s largest union—AFSCME 3299—has issued the following statement:

“While UC staff, students and patients were largely excluded from the secretive process that led to Secretary Janet Napolitano’s appointment, we appreciate her years of public service and congratulate her on becoming

the next President of the University of California. Secretary Napolitano’s tenure at UC begins at a time of skyrocketing student tuition, degraded patient care quality, increased privatization of public university resources, unprecedented debt, unrivaled executive excess, and declining taxpayer trust in top University leadership. While this will be the unfortunate legacy of her predecessor, it is our hope that Secretary Napolitano will work to arrest the UC’s continuing modesty problem, and restore the spirit of cooperation and respect

SKY VALLEY - Bernadette Schwenn, 64, a resident of Fan Canyon in Sky Valley, was arrested on Monday, July 1 on charges of animal cruelty. Schwenn lives in a makeshift shanty with no water, no electricity and a pack of Queensland Heeler dogs.

Last April, Kitty Pallesen, an animal advocate and writer received a call saying something

may have happened to the woman living in Fan Canyon and that her dogs needed help.

Bernadette, but found so many dogs with no food or water. I went back every day delivering water and food, not knowing if the woman was dead or alive. I did not know her last name or how to contact her. I started calling different agencies trying to get help for the dogs,” Pallesen

said in an exclusive interview. “The water and food bowls

were always empty. I counted 20 or 22 dogs at the camp near the road, not knowing there were more in an upper camp.

“One night a friend of Schwenn’s stopped by with a jug of water. He had not talked to her, did not know where she was nor had any contact information for her. Before he left, he said he did not understand why something had not been done a long time ago about the situation with the dogs, and that over the years

Schwenn had been personally responsible for ‘hundreds and hundreds’ of dead dogs.

Pallesen called Animal Control, the ASPCA, the Humane Society, PETA, Animal Samaritans, a County Supervisor, “and every place I could think of. Nobody called back.

“Sky Valley Park’s chapel raised money for a bigger water container. I asked the Sky Valley Fire Station if they could deliver water, but their tanks held

and the water is not suitable for

the dogs. “On May 1, I found an older

female (dog) laying out in the sun, too weak to move or drink, breathing hard. I took her to a vet trailing blood to the exam room. She was very emaciated.

“The veterinarian said was too far gone. The only option was to humanely end her suffering. I held her, whispered, and cried for her to the end, just like she was my own dog,” Pallesen said.

This dog’s death was

Desert Businesses Clamor to Attract Same Sex WeddingsBy Jackie Devereaux

PALM SPRINGS – The U.S. Supreme Court handed down a historic ruling on Wednesday, Jun. 26 to grant same sex marriages across the nation. In their ruling on DOMA and California’s Proposition 8, the justices overturned a previous lower court ruling which declared same sex marriage unconstitutional.

Within minutes of the landmark ruling, local hoteliers and wedding planners scrambled to promote Palm Springs as a premiere wedding destination.

“The Supreme Court’s

historic action today overturning DOMA and dismissing the appeal of California’s Proposition 8, clearing the way for same-sex marriage in our state is a huge victory for the LGBT community. This is about equal rights and I

recognized that we are all the same,” said Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet.

“My husband Christopher and I look forward to same-sex weddings commencing again in the state of California – and rest assured the City of Palm Springs will continue to be a destination committed to celebrating the

institution of marriage, both heterosexual and same-sex,” Pougnet said in a prepared statement

“Riverside County is prepared to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and record their marriages immediately after the anticipated direction is received from the state and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Hopefully that day will be here soon,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit.

Tampering with Evidence Indictments

Emin Bernd Alihodic was born on July 21, 1951 in Siegen, Germany and immigrated to the United States sometime in the late 1980s. Alihodic left behind two children and an ex-wife. His son, Jens (Alihodic) Luschnt, 35, came to Palm Springs on Monday, Aug. 12 to search for his biological father with only a

newspaper article describing how his dad was rescued twice off Mount San Jacinto on Feb. 9, 2009 and then again on May 13, 2010.

Jens, who speaks little or no English, was adopted by his step-father at the age of 10 and only knows a little about his biological father from stories his mother told him through the years.

“I’d like to know more

about him. How’s he been living all these years,” the younger Alihodic said through a German/English interpreter.

Jens said he started looking for his father about a year and a half ago after meeting the

own family soon and through her urging, they traveled to Palm Springs to search for his biological father.

Have you seen this man?

The Senior Social Media Connection

You turn inward, assessing where you’re living and work environments along with the foundations of your life. Your personal world is most important at this time. Perhaps you need a new home. Perhaps you need a garden or architectural landscaping. You realize only peace and quiet bring forth your authentic self. You think about security, what it means for you and if you can maintain it. You sense the need for more happiness. So you gather the family together, create a new rhythm that heals everyone.

You’re called away from your semi-hermetic life to be in contact with more people. Not necessarily happy about this, you however realize only you have the skills needed for a plan to be completed. You call for grace to assist you with communication. Learning new skills, your focus is now on thriving, not only surviving. Loved ones, far away, are contacted. They wait for your call.

Jupiter provides you with self-

revelatory discoveries, a deeper sense of self-worth and value. These are discoveries for a later time when you will actualize and bring into manifestation decisions that reflect your true needs, beliefs, knowledge and all that you value. Moving beyond the “talk” stage increases your spiritual world. Manage your finances and resources with care and tithing.

An event from the recent past helps you feel more confident, healthy and optimistic. A new cycle of inner growth is beginning. This will manifest in outer circumstances next year. Begin to have gratitude daily for this coming benefit. A new philosophy is also appearing, enhancing your goodness and sense of self. Allow for some indulgences. You’ve been restricted too long. Consider what pleases you. Ask for it.

Many things complete themselves in your life in the next 120 days. This is a 12-year cycle of completion. Spiritually, you’re seeing and understanding realities hidden behind veils —realities others don’t understand. Immersion in religion,

the spirit, study and practice yields revelations. You’re called to greater service to creatures, plants, animals and/or humans in need. As your love increases, their love also increases. Entering a state unity you join with the Nirmanakayas, the Great Contemplative Ones.

You begin a new series of goals and new ambitions, setting your sights on horizons far into the future. You dream big dreams for humanity and the world. Realizing the need to participate in community, you begin to build and construct in your mind what that community would be like. You are detailed, ordered and organized. You hold this quietly in your heart. Gestating the new reality for humanity. Draw that community.

New realities that expand your professional work emerge next spring. For now, in order to create a firm foundation, you consider your past work history — plateaus and upheavals, changes, stops and moving forwards. You assess if you want to continue on the same track or expand into something completely new. Something concerning parents or parenting needs support and recognition. Careful with love these next months. Be humble and grateful.

You explore many ideas concerning how you want to expand yourself in the coming year. You need

a new sense of adventure, outwardly and inwardly. Later you will be studying and reading more, perhaps taking up new spiritual practices or researching meditation. It’s an excellent time to write, to create journals of research and investigation, of travel and study. These expansions of consciousness will be professionally useful next year. You find there are no limits.

Thoughts on partnerships, mergers, sharing of resources and deep intimacy stir through mind like rainy day clouds. You realize the need for inner preparation before they come fully into view. All intimate relationships, resources and finances go through a review. You feel more open and vulnerable seeking connections with all things. The mystery of life and death, things magical (manifestation) and occult (mental not mystic) appear. Your values change. Quickly and surprisingly. Extremes happen. Upheavals. You remain observing, balanced and poised.

For the past six years you’ve experience personal development. After this year, you move out of your garden and enter the world once again. Personal encounters assume a greater depth of love and intimacy. There will be fruitful interactions, helpful people, mutual agreements, beneficial advice and advisors, healers and counselors assisting in understanding your life and goals. Teachers, friends,

family, cultures, wealth, beauty — all enhance your life. Your loving partnerships grow deeper in love.

You seek to improve skills and accomplishments, mastering a craft that for many years has been asleep, waiting to be awakened. You create more effective daily routines, tend to health, diet, and care of your body. All that you do for yourself will be supported by the precipitating cosmic energies. Your hard work brings a great sense of fulfillment. Seek less stress in your world. Find ways to have more relaxation and rest on a daily basis. Add prayer.

Creativity increases and as it does more courage comes forth, too. Tend to your heart. And tend to those for whom you are responsible. I found a poem the other day for you. Its message is important: “Life is short and we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of those who travel with us, so be swift to love and make haste to be kind. Be swift to love and make haste to be kind. Gladden others’ hearts.” Written by Henri-Frederic Amiel. Gladden your heart, too, Pisces.

adults can learn what the Facebook craze is all about in a class to be offered in the Mizell Senior Center’s Behrend Computer Learning Center on Friday, Nov. 15.

This two-hour, hands-on course will cover establishing, configuring and using a Facebook profile account.

Facebook is a great, and fairly simple, way for seniors to stay in touch with family and

grandchildren in an increasingly high-tech world. In addition to creating an account, the class will teach how to add friends, view and send Facebook messages, edit and tag photos, join a network and create event pages.

The Mizell Senior Center has been serving Palm Springs and surrounding communities for nearly 40 years, and it is the educational focal point on healthy and active aging. This is a place where active adults of all ages come together for service

and activities which enhance their dignity, support their independence and encourage their involvement in and with the community.

The Facebook class runs from 9-11 a.m. and space is limited to six participants. Cost of the course is $30 for members and $60 for non-members. To reserve your space for this important program or for additional info, call 760-323-5689, visit mizell.org or drop by the center at 480 S. Sunrise Way.

By Dan MarinelliCATHEDRAL CITY — In

what has been a football season filled with snapped streaks in the Desert Valley League (DVL), the Cathedral City High School Lions (3-1 DVL, 8-1 overall) had a chance to end the league’s longest win streak last Friday at Cathedral City High School.

The La Quinta High School Blackhawks (3-1 DVL, 6-3 overall), owners of an incredible 13-game, 13-year winning streak against the Lions, went into “The Jungle” looking to extend their winning streak.

However, with only one loss on their record, and an offense averaging 33.3 points a game, the Lions entered the matchup against the Blackhawks with the best, and most evenly matched, team they have fielded in over a decade.

Three weeks ago, no one could have predicted that allowing Palm Desert High Aztec running back Trae Riek to run for an unbelievable 465 yards, would, in fact, be a blessing in disguise for the Lions’ defense.

Riek’s historic game sent a clear message to Lions’ Head Coach Richard Lee. If the Lions are going to win a DVL title, then allowing 450-plus yards per game from one opposing running back is not going to get them there. Coach Lee’s defense was going to need some tweaking.

Now, three weeks later, the Lions defense found itself paired up against the Blackhawks — the league’s leading rushing team, averaging a hair over 300

yards per game. If the Lions had any hopes

in snapping the streak, it was no secret that they were going to have to limit the production of Blackhawks star receiver-turned-running back Vincent Guzman.

With another chance to defend an elite running back, the Lions’ defense had an opportunity to redeem its half-hearted performance against Riek and the Aztecs.

Guzman, who averages 131.5 rushing yards a game and is coming off of a 253-yard performance in his last game, is supported by alternate running backs Darius Griffin and Chris “Turbo” Rom-Turibio. Together, their three-headed monster of a running game has accounted for 20 of the team’s 34 touchdowns. Only 11 Blackhawks touchdowns have come from passes.

With these facts in mind, Coach Lee’s defensive game plan was obvious: clog the holes and force the young Blackhawks’ quarterback Michael Avina to do what he has not been forced to do all season — throw the ball. From the Blackhawks’ first possession of the game, the Lions’ game plan looked viable.

After gaining only 10 yards in their first seven plays, the Blackhawks seemed a bit discouraged by their lack of immediate offensive production on their first possession. The Blackhawks projected defeat and they hadn’t even given up any points.

Midway through the first

quarter, the Lions’ offense finally took advantage of the Blackhawks’ offensive inability to move the ball. Lions junior quarterback Davin Lile took it upon himself to take the game over with his legs: his two long rushing touchdowns in the first quarter propelled the team to the early two-touchdown lead.

By the end of the first half, the score was 21-7 in favor of the Lions. With the Blackhawks’ uncharacteristic inability to produce on the offensive end,

it appeared the game had been decided.

The Lions dominated the Blackhawks in the second half as much as they did in the first half. Two third- quarter Lions touchdowns — a 40-yard catch from star receiver James Rodriguez and a 40-plus-yard run from running back Orlando Wallace — put the game out of reach for the Blackhawks.

T h e L i o n s ’ offense was working on all cylinders, but their tight, stingy defense was what set them apart.

Guzman, one of the league’s best running backs, scored a running touchdown in the first quarter to try and get the Blackhawks back in the game. At the start of the fourth quarter, Guzman would catch one more touchdown, but unfortunately for the Blackhawks, his last score came when the lead was insurmountable.

Despite his two touchdowns, the Lions were able to hold Guzman to 130 yards running on 30 carries — his lowest totals since his first game playing running back. Additionally, the Blackhawks only ran for 160 total yards; that’s almost half as much as their 300 average.

After 13 years, the Lions finally ended the Blackhawks’ amazing run.

With one game left on the schedule, the Lions are now

positioned to clinch their first DVL title in over a decade. If the Lions can defeat the former defending champion Palm Springs High Indians this Friday, they will be DVL co-champions — under one condition.

The Blackhawks have to defeat the DVLs’ only undefeated team, the Aztecs. If the Aztecs win, they will be the

sole champions of the DVL. Twisting matters further, if the Lions and the Blackhawks win this Friday, the Aztecs,

B l ackhawks a n d L i o n s will be in a three-w a y

t i e

for first and they will all be co-champions.

Both the Blackhawks and Lions finish their

regular season schedu les a t home. Each game starts at 7 p.m.

Samaritans SPCA will hold its 13th annual Walk for the Animals & Pet Expo on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Sunrise Park. The event raises money to feed, shelter, rescue and provide veterinary care for animals in need. This year, Animal Samaritans welcomes several Marines and their canine warriors from the Marine Corps base in nearby 29 Palms.

The veterans will share touching stories of serving side by side with dogs on the battlefield, the roles they fill, and the bond between soldiers and combat dogs. In addition, Sherri Waters from Wounded Warriors, a nonprofit organization that trains and matches therapy dogs with veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress, will be at the event to discuss her work and share inspiring stories of

hope and healing. Following the optional one-mile walk through and around Sunrise Park, pet lovers will enjoy more than 30 pet-related vendors, including several local animal shelters with pets for adoption and food vendors — such as The Cowboy Way, Tootie’s Barbecue and Grandpa’s Kettle Corn. There will be a Frisbee dog performance, a Flyball dog performance, and demonstrations from the U.S. Marines canine unit

and Indio Police K9 unit. Animal Samaritans will also offer affordable pet vaccinations and microchipping starting at 9:30 a.m. Guests are reminded to bring cash for great food and great raffle prizes that include a new beach cruiser bicycle, big screen TV and deluxe pet package.Animal Samaritans will also honor 10 student finalists from their “Kindness to Animals” Student Art Contest, which was open to local

fourth through eighth graders. At noon, Animal Samaritans will call the finalist on stage and announce the winning artists. The top artist from elementary school (grades four and five) will receive four free passes to Disneyland, and the top artist from junior high school (grades six, seven and eight) will receive four free passes to Six Flags Magic Mountain. Animal Samaritans SPCA, founded in 1978, is a non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of animals and people.
