Story and Photos by Pat Krause One of the best hot spots for

entertainment is the Purple Room in Palm Springs.

JoAnn Worley from the famous TV show, Rowan and Martins, Laugh In, made a return visit to the Purple Room with more of the show’s humor and song. JoAnn performed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the Labor Day weekend to a filled restaurant of adoring fans. Dick Taylor introduced JoAnn as she stepped on stage with her signature large roses, long strands of pearls and feathered boa. Guests enjoyed a scrumptious dinner before her performance in this most intimate of venues.

A new sound system and two large-screen TVs enhanced the performances. Diners in the back across the room could enjoy the show watching these TVs while sipping exotically named drinks. The Cleopatra, Bacall, Dean Martini, The Sammy, The Mommie Dearest and the Purple Orchid bring fun names to specially made drinks. Guests could order either small plates or large dinners from the menu.

JoAnn showed videos of some of the TV shows in which she starred, which included some

of the funniest clips of Laugh In. She was part of the game show where a contestant won $10,000 because of her help. These videos brought back wonderful memories. In between videos, she sang songs from that era. She told stories about her career in show business that brought laughter from the crowd. She still has an amazing voice and probably would not even need a microphone as she hits the high notes. Every now and then, she would say BORING from the Laugh In show. She has been a star on Broadway, in movies and TV with her amazing talent.

It was a busy night on Friday as The Martini Kings followed the JoAnn Worley show for those that wanted late-night entertainment. This group has been performing for many years and is well known having been on the Oscars and Emmys stages plus performing with other famous stars. There are a lot of upcoming shows with Susan Anton performing on Friday the 11th and Sat. the 12th with dinner at 5:30 and show at 7:45. She will perform at a Sunday Brunch at 11:30 and show at 1:00. Susan Anton was a hit as a star in the Palm Springs Follies and a show not to be missed.

led Colts and a healthy Matthew Stafford led Lions: Lots of stats, not a lot of Super Bowls.

Meanwhile in Indy, the Colts have added veteran leadership on offense and get Robert Mathis back (eventually). The Colts will benefit from playing in a conference in which every team has glaring deficiencies and they have the fewest. The Broncos will benefit from the fact they have Peyton Manning. I’m not a fan of the way this team was built. Too many “me” guys, not enough “heartbeat” guys. But there’s a lot, A LOT, of talent. So they’ll win.

Wildcards: Bills, Chiefs. That’s right! Tyrod Taylor is THE man who ends THE drought.

Well, LeSean McCoy, Sammy Watkins and that defensive line will also have something to do with it too, but the NFL’s longest playoff drought will end this year. The Chiefs are a wildcard team because they have a guy in Jeremy Maclin that can actually catch the football, a solution to the problems Dwayne Bowe presented AND the defense is healthy and back and even injured last year, they allowed the fewest rushing touchdowns in the NFL. I thought about the Chargers, but their lines, offensive and defensive, are still a concern and I’m looking forward to watching the Raiders play football. A thought that hasn’t crossed my mind in more than a decade.

AFC Champ: Indianapolis Colts

NFC Division Winners:If I’m honest about it, I

wouldn’t mind seeing the Chip Kelly experiment to fail, just seems like one man with that much power is bound to blow up. But I don’t think it will. He’s assembled some immense talent on offense, Sam Bradford could have a breakout year and their defense is solid. This is a good football team, they just need to execute week in and week out and they’ll have a bye week in January. Eagles will win the East. I’m going with the Vikings to win the North. The Packers defense is a massive question mark. Yes, there’s Clay Matthews, no, that’s not enough.

And without Jordy Nelson, that offense will be good, but not great. The Vikings were closing the gap last year without an angry Adrian Peterson. The Dan Quinn effect in Atlanta will have the Falcons in the post season. And the Seahawks would have to have a major catastrophe to miss the playoffs after adding the touchdown machine known as Jimmy Graham.

Wildcards: Packers get in over the Cards, Lions and Saints because they have Aaron

Rodgers. Niners get in because their defense, despite losing Patrick Willis, Chris Borland and Justin Smith to retirement still has Navarro Bowman, Antoine Bethea and Jarryd Hayne might be the breakout NFL star of the year.

Gray Wolf Returns to California

By Pamela Price Fall foliage in Twisp,

Washington is a kaleidoscope of autumn’s colors custom-made for hiking and outdoor exploration. Twisp, in the Methow Valley between two of America’s largest wilderness areas, the Paysatan and Sawtooth, is home to Twisp River Suites, a resort with luxurious touches in each of its sixteen suites, from Memory Foam beds to a convenient pair of reading glasses. You just want to make yourself at home at this off the beaten path destination with modern comfort’s galore. It took Joe Marver, a Minnesotan with a flair for hospitality and attention to detail, to put this sixteen suite ‘hotel’ into the limelight, especially for those seeking to blend the great outdoors with art, culture, healthy dining and long walks on hiking trails framed by the colorful displays of fall foliage.

And it’s a haven for those traveling with their pets, as well. Three spacious suites are designed for those with heir pets in tow, from comfy beds to enclosed spaces for their safety. Fly fishing, hiking and

biking and river rafting through class III-IV rapids aside, the Twisp Suites is also well-located behind the Twist River Pub amidst a populace dominated by artisans, musicians and craftspeople. Suites enjoy private decks overlooking the River enhanced by deep soaker bathtubs and nature-inspired bath amenities.

September and October mean fall foliage, a canvas bursting with autumn’s lush palate of orange and bronze. And in the midst of it all, you’ll find Marver, owner of the Twist River Suites who loves every minute of fine tuning this comfortable hideaway into treasured destination. Trip Advisor reveals 300 “excellent rat ings” with laudatory comments such as “home away from home in Northern Cascades” to “loved it” and “paradise in Twisp.”

Marver fell in love with this friendly hamlet bringing into the community his flair for hospitality, comfort cuisine and the arts. Growing up in St. Paul, MN means he is familiar with the four seasons, especially those long, deep freeze winters. “We are open year-round with

activities nonstop,” he says. On Friday evenings he sings accompanied by a classical guitarist, and on October 8th he has an Oktoberfest party planned.

During the devastating fires that swept through the Twisp, Wintrop and Methow Valley area in August, Marver accommodated firefighters and residents who were in danger. He also directs guests to the weekly Farmers Market on Saturday, which is limited to those farmers residing in Okanogan County. Marver brags about the displays of strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and Wenatchee Valley apples (#1 in the world) local cheeses, Chevre and the array of regional produce.

And then there are three Pet Suites with a private fence and courtyard. “I realized how important pets are when I received seven Inquiries in a single week from potential guests who said they would not make a reservation unless their dogs were welcome! I took that seriously,” says Marver. “Now there’s a suite for small or medium breed pets, another accommodating two adults and

two pets and the largest, ideal for three adults and two pets. There is a charge for one’s pet, per night. ”

Having breakfast here is another reason to spend a few days. The breakfast menu features home made gluten-free casseroles showcasing local ingredients to the max. “Today we served fruit parfaits, home-made bread pudding, vegetable quiche and localized Blue Star coffee,” Marver said.

Getting to this postage stamp paradise is worth the journey. The drive from Spokane International Airport (GEG) is three hours. The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport has flights to Wenatchee, WA, From there the drive to Twisp is 90 minutes. Rates during fall foliage began at $139. Suites include a full kitchen, washer, dryer, and an “art wall” featuring local artwork, flat screen Direct TV and complimentary high-speed wireless Internet. Plan to stay at least two nights!

By Desert Star StaffMOUNT SHASTA, Calif. -

The wolf pack is back - literally! A pack of gray wolves has been discovered in California for the first time since they were hunted almost to extinction about 90 years ago.

Trail cameras recently caught sight of what’s known as the Shasta pack in Siskiyou County near Mount Shasta. Pamela Flick with the nonprofit Defenders of Wildlife says the gray wolf has been under federal protection since 1973 but was just listed as endangered in California last year, making it illegal to hunt or harass the animals.

“The Shasta pack is known to have at least five pups and the alpha male and female,” says Flick. “The presence of a whole pack affirms that wolves know

that there is suitable habitat in our state and are already using it. Grey wolves are back for good.”

The wolves are believed to have spread from existing packs in Oregon. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has been working with stakeholders in conservation, livestock production and hunting interests to develop a California Wolf Plan, which will be released for public comment by the end of the year.

Kimberly Baker is with the nonprofit Environmental Protection Information Center.

“I look forward to a day where we have viable populations of wolves and wolves and humans are coexisting and sharing the landscape together,” says Baker.

Flick says her group is working with ranchers to make

the repopulation of wolves in California go smoothly.

“Defenders of Wildlife has a lot of experience in working with nonlethal tools to reduce conflicts between wolves and livestock so that they can live in harmony and

share the same landscape,” she says.

In the future, Fish and Game biologists plan to briefly capture one of the adult wolves so the animal can be fitted with a tracking device and then released.

New music heroes, a classic rock band, as well as one of Disney’s greatest-ever soundtracks are showcased via recent releases.

Artist: StyxTitle: Live at The Orleans Arena Las Vegas (Eagle Rock Entertainment)You might like if you enjoy: Styx, Kansas, Tommy Shaw

Tell me more: Just as Rush, and subsequently Kansas have enjoyed a wide-ranging resurgence over the past few years, Styx has experienced a renewal for songs blending v i r tuoso mus ic iansh ip , memorable songwriting and arena-worthy dynamics. “Live at The Orleans Arena Las Vegas” is the perfect audio showcase of Styx’s contemporary powers, with the dozen-song set mixing up hits (“Lady,” “Renegade,” “Come Sail Away”) and choice album cuts (“The Grand Illusion,” “Suite Madame Blue”). The most memorable selections

here are nuanced version of singer-guitarist Tommy Shaw’s masterwork “Crystal Ball,” and a rocking take on “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)” where Styx is joined by former Eagles lead guitarist Don Felder. Information: eagle-rock.com or styxworld.com.

Artist: Hollis BrownTitle: 3 Shots (Inkind Music)You might like if you enjoy: Counting Crows, Simon and Garfunkel; Crosby, Stills and Nash

Tell me more: With an artistic spirit that recalls a myriad of roots and folk rock greats, New York-spawned quintet Hollis Brown’s “3 Shots” rings true via the anthemic “Cathedral,” lush “3 Shots,” the ambitious “John Wayne” (that grows from an acoustic lament to a roaring rocker over nearly 7-1/2 minutes), Bo Diddley-mining “Rain Dance” and tuneful “Sweet Tooth.” The band also joins forces with acclaimed

Americana songstress Nikki Lane on the infectious rootsy rocker “Highway 1.” Southern California audiences can catch Hollis Brown when they open for Counting Crows at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in Irvine, CA on Oct. 2, or when the band headlines at Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles on Oct. 3. Information: hollisbrown.com.

Artist: Tommy KeeneTitle: Laugh in the Dark (Second Motion)You might like if you enjoy: Matthew Sweet, Marshall Crenshaw, The Replacements

Tell me more: There isn’t a clunker anywhere to be found on rocker Tommy Keene’s “Laugh in the Dark,” the latest in a long line of strong discs from the Maryland native. Kicking things off with the driving “Out Of My Mind” and continuing with the romantic “Dear Heloise,” Keene’s songs cast their spell with a single listen. “Last Of

The Twilight Girls” and “Alone in These Modern Times” mine that melody-meets-melancholy rock territory once owned strictly by the Smithereens, while the beautiful “All The Lights Are Alive,” spirited Replacements-minded “I Belong To You” and genre-blending “All Gone Away” cast further delight on the singer-guitarist’s potent original song craft. Information: tommykeene.com.

Title: The Legacy Collection: Pocahontas (Walt Disney Records)You might like if you enjoy: Composer Alan Menken, singer Judy Kuhn

Tell me more: Even when separated from the 1995 animated Disney classic that creatively mixed history and fantasy, “The Legacy Collection: Pocahontas” soundtrack is a joyful listen. Composer Alan Menken’s instrumental score, as well as the songs he composed with lyricist Stephen Schwartz,

shine bright more than 20 years after their creation on the newly-issued “The Legacy Collection: Pocahontas.” The centerpiece “Colors of the Wind” is one of the decade’s best film-related songs (far besting “My Heart Will Go On” from 1997’s “Titanic”), and the new deluxe edition features that gem along with a number of other wonderful songs. Singer Judy Kuhn has a beautiful soprano, as heard on the soaring “Just Around the Riverbend” and dramatic “Epiphany/Savages” which features a mix of solo voices and chorus. A second disc includes some early demos (including the sweet duet “In The Middle of the River” which was not included in the final film). “Pocahontas” received two Academy Awards for its music, including Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “Colors of the Wind.” Information: DisneyMusicEmporium.com.

Past, present celebrated on new releasesMUS I C BY ROBERT KINSLER

By Lindsey BahrLOS ANGELES (AP) - Martin

Milner, whose wholesome good looks helped make him the star of two hugely popular 1960s TV series, “Route 66” and “Adam-12,” has died.

He was 83. “Adam-12” co-star Kent McCord, who spoke to Milner’s children, said Milner died Sunday near the La Costa neighborhood of Carlsbad, Calif. He said the family is doing well, but gave no other details.

Milner, who began his career as a teen actor, shot to fame in 1960 with co-star George Maharis in the iconic TV drama “Route 66,” which found two restless young men roaming the highway author John Steinbeck had dubbed “The Mother Road” in a red Corvette convertible.

Milner was Tod Stiles, a young man born to wealth but suddenly broke when his father died and left him nothing but the new Corvette. Maharis was Buz Murdock, a hardened survivor of New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen.

Together they toured the country in Tod’s new Corvette,

meeting all kinds of people and becoming involved with their lives. The series was said to have been inspired by Jack Kerouac’s novel “On the Road” and it featured such weekly guest stars as Robert Redford, Alan Alda and Gene Hackman in some of their earliest roles.

As much the show’s star as Milner and Maharis was Route 66 itself. Since bypassed in favor of bigger, faster interstates, the iconic highway stretched unbroken from Chicago to the Pacific Ocean during the show’s heyday and was venerated as a driving force behind the country’s 20th century westward migration.

“Route 66” was the only TV show filmed entirely on location in the early 1960s, moving to new towns and cities for each new episode. But ironically, the action often took place off the highway.

“The problem was that once you get into Oklahoma and Texas on the route, the scenery is flat and boring,” Milner recounted in a 1997 interview. “Pictorially it just wasn’t very interesting.”

Maharis, who became ill with

hepatitis and missed part of the third season, left “Route 66” at the end of that year amid rumors of a contract dispute. He was replaced by Glenn Corbett, who played a war hero trying to cope with civilian life. The magic was gone, however, and the show lasted just one more season.

In 1968 Milner signed on to another buddy series, “Adam-12.” This time he was Officer Pete Malloy, a veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department assisted by rookie cop Jim Reed, who was played by Kent McCord.

“I had a long, long friendship with Marty and we remained friends up till the end,” said McCord on Monday. “He was one of the really true great people of our industry with a long, distinguished career...Wonderful films, wonderful television shows, pioneering shows like ‘Route 66.’ He was one of the great guys. I was lucky to have him in my life.”

Los Ange les Po l ice Department Chief Charlie Beck said Monday that Milner’s “depiction of a professional and tough yet compassionate cop” led

to his own decision to apply to the department.

The series was produced by Jack Webb, who applied the same realistic treatment of police doings that had made his “Dragnet” TV show, in which he was Sgt. Joe Friday, a huge hit. During the seven-year life of “Adam-12,” both Reed and Malloy won promotions.

Milner had met Webb years before “Route 66” when both were appearing in the feature film “Halls of Montezuma,” and Webb had hired him for an early radio version of “Dragnet.” Later, he appeared in several episodes of the 1950s TV version.

When Milner was in the Army at Northern California’s Fort Ord, he would sometimes visit Los Angeles and look Webb up.

“Even though there wasn’t a part for me in ‘Dragnet’ that week,” he recalled in 1989, “Jack would write one in so I could collect $125.”

Before and after “Route 66” and “Adam 12” Milner appeared in numerous TV guest roles and in films. Early film roles included “The Sands of Iwo Jima,” ‘’Marjorie

Morningstar” and (as Marty Milner) “Sweet Smell of Success.”

Others films were “Louisa,” ‘’Our Very Own,” ‘’Operation Pacific,” ‘’Battle Zones,” ‘’My Wife’s Best Friend,” ‘’Springfield Rifle,” ‘’The Long Gray Line,” ‘’Mister Roberts,” ‘’Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.” ‘’Valley of the Dolls” and “Three Guns for Texas.”

Martin Sam Milner was born in Detroit and grew up in Seattle, where he worked as a child actor in local plays. When the family moved to Los Angeles, he found jobs in movies, notably in his film debut as the second son in 1947’s “Life with Father” which starred William Powell and Irene Dunne.

After finishing the film he was stricken with polio and spent a year in bed. He recovered and enrolled in theater arts at the University of Southern California but dropped out after a year to devote himself to his acting career.

Milner married actress-singer Judy Jones in 1951, and they had four children: Amy, who died in 2004, Molly, Stuart and Andrew. Source KMIR

What do you think Walt Disney, Vincent Van Gogh and fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent had in common? One answer is, they were all innovators with artistic vision and talent. A second shared element in their lives is the fact that each was aided by the financial prowess of someone close to them. Disney, for example, was able to give life to “Snow White,” “Dumbo,” “Bambi” and countless other animated fairytale character’s thanks to his brother Roy. Tortured and often penniless, Van Gogh was given monetary and emotional strength from his brother Theo and the significant stabilizer for Yves Saint Laurent was his business partner, Pierre Berge. Roy, Theo and Pierre made it possible for each of these gifted, yet often troubled geniuses to release their unique creations into the universe. Now all three artists are gone, but their

undiminished legacy lives on. In Sony Pictures, Classics

“Saint Laurent,” director and co-writer Bertrand Bonello brings the designer to life, focusing on ten pivotal years in his life—1967 to 1976. The film was featured in “Entertainment Weeklies’ popular ‘Must List” and was France’s official submission for Best Foreign Language Film for the 87th Academy Awards. It was an official selection at the 2014 Cannes and New York Film Festivals, was a 2015 Cesar Award winner for Best Costume Design and was nominated for numerous other Cesar Awards including Best Film, Best Actor (Gaspard Ulliel) and Best Supporting Actors (Jeremie Renier, Louis Garrel).

In the film the viewer gets the chance to examine the color and lush textures of St. Laurent’s extraordinary life and see what it was like to

be a part of the glamour and decadence of the European Fashion world at that time.

St. Laurent was born in Algeria in 1936 and died 72 years later of brain cancer in Paris. But in between that time line he led an amazing, often times decadent life as one of the world’s greatest designers. His world was filled with success, defeat, glamour, drugs, booze and art.

His desire to design began in his youth when he created paper figures and dressed them in lovely gowns of his own deign. For his youthful inspirations, he devoured his mother’s fashion magazines. He was shy and often bullied, but eventually he, like the proverbial butterfly, emerged from his cocoon to create haute couture fashion designs that dazzled the world. They were innovative, classy and classic.

Throughout his life, he gazed upon the world through signature dark-rimmed glasses and by age 21, he took over the fashion house of Dior. When he was called up for military duty, he was replaced at Dior. As a result, he fell apart and wound up in a mental hospital. In 1958, he met Pierre Berge (Jeremie Renier) who became not only a lover, but his trusted business partner, friend and guardian of the Yves Saint Laurent brand and worldwide reputation.

While Laurent’s life seemed like a fashion fairy tale, filled with color and glamour, it was also a life tinged by substance abuse and self-doubt. Now, due to this film and a documentary filmed by David Teboul, the truth of his often tortured life comes to the big screen.

Gasbard Ulliel, who plays Saint Laurent in the Sony Classics film, “Saint Laurent,” describes the man as “an artist, not just a designer.” Actor Jeremie Renier (Pierre) sees the icon as “A

visionary in many ways. “Saint Laurent” debuts on

Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD on September 22. It is rated R for graphic nudity, strong sexual situations, substance abuse throughout and some language. The film, in French with English subtitles, has a running time of approximately 150 minutes.

••••••••••••••On September 15, Disney

will release three DVDs for family film fun: “Cinderella,” “DisneyNature Monkey Kingdom” and “Lego Star Wars: The New Yoda Chronicles.”

Years ago, Walt Disney created a delightful animated version of the classic fairytale “Cinderella.” Now, many years later, the lovely Cinderella returns in a live-action film version to the story, staring Lily James (TVs “Downton Abbey”) in the title role with Cate Blanchett as her domineering stepmother. The

DVD features over 12 minutes of additional scenes, including an alternate opening, plus the “Frozen Fever” theatrical short. Rated PG.

“DisneyNature Monkey Kingdom,” a playful documentary about a clever and resourceful monkey named Maya, Is set among ancient ruins in the jungles of South Asia. Maya’s world changes dramatically when she welcomes her son Kip into her colorful extended monkey family. Their adventures will make you laugh as Maya’s world changes for the better. The upbeat nature documentary is narrated with zest by Tina Fey. Note: DisneyNature will donate a portion of the first-week sales to Conservation International to help protect endangered species in their natural habitats. Bonus features include: “Tales From the Kingdom,” “On the Set of Monkey Kingdom with Jane Goodall and Wolfgang Dittus,: “DisneyNature Monkey Kingdom: The Conservation Story,” a music video performed by Jacquie Lee and more. Rated G.

Your favorite Lego Star Wars heroes are back with four complete episodes: Escape from the JedI Temple, Race for the Holocrons, Raid on Coruscant and Clash of the Skywalkers with a bonus feature, an alternate ending for Clash of the Skywalkers.

After headstrong Luke nearly delivers the good guys into Palpatine’s clutches, Master Yoda and the ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi unearth the Holocrons--last remnants of the secrets of the JedI—to further Luke’s training. But Darth Vader also seeks the Holocrons and will stop at nothing to get them first. Total running time is approximately 92 minutes. Rated G. For more information visit DisneyDVD.com.

By Desert Star StaffThe offshoot has confirmed

a split within the largest Yakuza syndicate in Japan. Thousands of excommunicated members of the Yamaguchi-gumi formed a new crime syndicate over the weekend. Police expect a wave of violence.

The Yamaguchi-gumi reigns supreme over all other conglomerates, with about half Japan’s gangsters directly or indirectly employed by it. The Yakuza grouping has had a tumultuous history, and splits in its ranks have always deserved the attention of authorities, owing to the wave of bloody retributive violence that inevitably follows such events. The last such rift occurred in the mid-80s, leading to 293 violent clashes and a series of killings.

Now, the newly-formed group which according to Kyodo News would call itself Kobe Yamaguchi-gumi has officially declared its split, issuing a document, according to investigative sources speaking to Japanese media. The document contains quite brazen descriptions of Shinobu Tsukasa (aka Kenichi Shinoda), the sixth-generation leader of the syndicate.

Many in his ranks accused Tsukasa of extreme egotism, sources said Monday as cited by the Japan Times. Reportedly, another reason is his desire to expand the gang’s turf from its native Kobe into Tokyo and other areas.

The secession document was signed by Kunio Inoue, the leader of the Yamaken-gumi – a Yakuza clan within the

Yamaguchi-gumi, also based in Kobe, and consisting of 2,000 members.

Inoue and others who seceded explain that they did so in order to honor the wishes of the previous leaders of the Yamaguchi-gumi. The newly formed Kobe Yamaguchi will continue to use the logo currently used by Tsukasa’s syndicate, which is a controversial move, and might escalate matters further. Recent news of the possible split between the two had the police on high alert – although some in law enforcement circles say this is an opportunity to weaken the clan structure.

It remains to be seen how the power balance between the two will play out. The original Yamaguchi-gumi wishes to spread itself thin by branching

out; however, its more than 23,000 members comprise nearly 50 percent of all of Japan’s Yakuza – a substantial advantage over the Kobe Yamaguchi figure, so far only boasting 3,000.

Suspicions within the Yamaguchi-gumi began to emerge over the summer, leading to the excommunication of the 13 Yakuza leaders of clans thought to be the most dangerous to the syndicate’s unity.

The Yamaguchi-gumi was born in 1915, founded by a western-Japanese fisherman. It’s Japan’s largest syndicate,

existing in 44 out of 47 of Japan’s prefectures, while its reach also spreads to overseas operations in Asia and the United States.

Its wealth measures $80 billion, Fortune magazine said last year, making it by far the richest syndicate in the world – a wealth acquired from drug trafficking, prostitution and white collar crime; although, in a bid to expand, the Yakuza have been branching out into new crime sectors, which is a departure from the golden age of Japanese Yakuza – the 1980s.

By Desert Star StaffCOGNAC, France – To

celebrate its 300th anniversary, it was essential for the Martell House to celebrate its origins in Cognac, and in particular in the Château de Chanteloup, which has been refurbished for the event.

Over 2,500 winegrowers, distillers and other partners from the Cognac region received their invitations from Martell employees, who delivered them personally to mark their special relationship. For a month ahead of the event, they criss-crossed the Charente countryside in Martell branded trucks to hand-deliver the invitations to partners.

“This is a very special year for Martell, which is celebrating three centuries of cognac-making and close bonds with the people of Cognac. We wanted to invite all the local partners with whom we have nurtured a truly remarkable partnership for nearly ten generations, and

I sincerely hope that this special relationship will continue for many generations to come,” said César Giron, Chairman and CEO of Martell House.

Spectacular staging for an experience rich in sense & history

Guests were treated to a spectacular surprise at the start of the evening when two fighter jets roared across the Cognac sky, followed by three planes from the “Cartouche Doré”, a squadron of seasoned flight instructors from the French air force flight academy in Cognac. The squadron is considered the “little brother” of the famed Patrouille de France aerobatics team, which put on a demonstration for guests during the 20 May event in Versailles. Two Cap Ten aerobatic planes then wrote out the number “300” in white smoke before dropping three parachutists – carrying some flags marked with Martell colours – who joined the guests and presented César Giron &

Alexandre Ricard with bottles of the limited edition cognac given to guests as a gift.

This exceptional 40-minute airshow –a tribute to a shared history anchored in savoir-faire, excellence and passion – was crowned by a stunning fireworks display to set the stage for a grandiose evening in an amazing setting.

In an enchanting decor reminding of Versailles, guests had the chance to enjoy cocktails created especially for Martell’s 300th anniversary by Thierry Hernandez (head barman at the famous Plaza Athenée). The 3,200 guests shared a custom-crafted culinary experience

developed in collaboration with the Château de Chanteloup’s chefs Eric Danger and Pascal Nebout. The menu featured delectable gastronomical specialties from the region with an emphasis on local seasonal products, as well as contemporary takes on recipes dating from 1715.

After being warmly thanked for their contribution to Martell, they danced late into the night. The concert was punctuated by the unexpected arrival of French singer-songwriter Louis Bertignac (a founding member of the group Telephone), a friend of the House who couldn’t resist a chance to play several of his hits.

Because the Tricentenaire of Martell is above all an opportunity to celebrate 300 years of craftsmanship and excellence, each guest received an exclusive limited edition cognac, a blend of fifteen eaux-de-vie from the five main crus, spanning the last three centuries.

“The blending of these 15 eaux-de-vie, which then completed their ageing in barrels made from 300-year-old oak, spotlights our savoir-faire, our commitment, and our attachment to a House that has let us continue a fabulous story that began in 1715.” Notes Martell Cellar Master Benoît Fil.

Martell Celebrates 300 Years Of Craftsmanship

By Desert Star StaffA ringing cell phone starts off

this madcap romantic comedy by Pulitzer Prize finalist Sarah Ruhl. When the peaceful setting in an otherwise-quiet café is interrupted by the incessant ring tone, Jean, the woman at the next table, becomes exasperated. Discovering that the phone’s owner is dead, she answers the phone -- and soon finds herself dating the dead man’s brother, sharing cosmopolitans with his widow, and meeting his mistress for a mysterious rendezvous. Jean’s odd odyssey to set things right for the dead man results in reawakening her own life by

forcing her to confront her own assumptions about morality, redemption and the need to connect in a technologically obsessed world.

Winner of the Helen Hayes Award for Best New Play, Dead Man’s Cell Phone was first presented in 2007 at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington D.C. before going to New York City, where it opened at Playwrights Horizons starring Mary Louise Parker.

Dead Man’s Cell Phone takes a look at life and connection in a world of technology. September 18-26, 2015 at the Arthur Newman Theatre in Palm Desert, CA.
