Keynote1SeamlesslySupportedPersonalNavigationintheCityDiamantinoFreitasUniversidadedoPorto,PortugalRoomE–1December|12h00m-13h00mChair:LeontiosHadjileontiadisAbstractPersonalmobility in the city built environment is a very important aspect of autonomy andindependencethatneedssubstantially increasedsupportaseveryonemayagree.Localizationand geo-referencing, access to location information, guidance and navigation are essentialmeansfor integration inthebuiltenvironmentanduseof thepublic transportsystemthat isalsoindispensable.Inspiteoftheavailabilityofrelevanttechnologiesthereisstillmuchtobedoneattheintegrationlevel,inordertodeployinclusiveserviceswithagoodaccessibilityfortheuser’sbenefit.In this communication, the experience of the Speech Processing and Electro-acousticsLaboratory of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto in the research anddevelopmentofinclusivesolutionsforpersonalmobilitywillbepresentedanddiscussed.One of the achievements that works as an umbrella project is NAVMETRO®, the telephonevoiceportalandambientacousticguidancesystemfortheblindandamblyopic inthePorto’sundergroundtransportsystem.Associatedwith this project’s evolution, several usability evaluation andenhancementworkswill be reported. One of the laboratory’s recent outcome, the Audio-GPS acoustic indoorlocalization system, will also be described with a discussion of its impact potential on theinclusion of a wide range of users’ needs for accessing and living in the built environment,includinganowfeasibleindoor-outdoorseamlessintegration.

An alternativeapproachisemergingthatfocuseson“keepingpeoplehealthy”throughprimaryandsecondaryprevention in all phases of life. This paradigm shift in the healthcare systems is demandingresearchinambient,sensor-enhancedassistivetechnologiesthat“keeppeopleoutsideofthehospital”. Therefore, a fast- growing interest exists for wearable and pervasive computingsystems and ambient assistive technology that aim at ubiquitous health promotion forindividualsinthehomeandcommunitysettings.Thetalkwillpresentseveralexamples forassociatedresearchprojects in the fieldsofsports,health,andmedicine.AparticularexampleisthemiLiferesearchproject.Inthisproject,wei)implemented ambient sensors for hysiological (ECG, EMG, …) and biomechanical(accelerometer, gyroscope, …) data recording, ii) used pervasive computing systems (e.g. insmartphonesorsmarthomes)formonitoringandsignalprocessing,andiii)employeddatabasetechnology,machine learningalgorithms,andsimulationmodels inorder toprovideaccurateinformation to sportsmen, patients, and caregivers in numerous applications that aimed atpromotinghealthylivingandimprovinghealthcare.The talkwill also present further research challenges that exist in the field ofwearable andpervasive computing systems for ubiquitous health support. Example challenges are therequired signal processing andmachine learning algorithms that need to be computationallyefficientyet sufficientlyaccurate,butalsocomprehensivedatabases, simulativedataanalysisand holistic data mining strategies. Keynote3PedagogicalaspectsofICTinlearningandcommunicationdisordersTassosAnastassiosMikropoulosUniversityofIoannina,GreeceRoomE–2December|12h00m-13h00mChair:JoséAlvesDinizAbstractThecontributionofInformationandCommunicationTechnologies(ICT)toinclusiveeducationisimplemented in twodifferent aswell as complementaryways. Firstly, assistive technologies,based mainly on hardware systems, facilitate access to learning resources and to theeducational system in general. Secondly, educational technology, with its main focus atsoftware applications, contributes to cognitive enhancement, a topic of great importance inlearningandcommunicationdisorders.Learningdisordersincludedyslexiathatmainlyinvolvesreading disability and mathematics disorder, developmental disabilities like the autismspectrumdisorder, intellectualdisability, developmental coordinationdisorder, speech sounddisorder,languageimpairment,andattention-deficithyperactivitydisorder.This work underlines the importance of the pedagogical approaches in designing ICT-basedenvironmentstocognitiveenhancementinsituationsoflearningandcommunicationdisorders.Students with learning and communication disorders need individually designed andsystematically monitored teaching procedures, adapted systems and teaching material thatconstitute an environment whereby their difficulties can be circumvented. Researchers andeducators understand that interactive environments can help to address the needs of thosestudents.Technologycanhaveasignificantroleintheteachinginterventionsofindividualswithspecial needs, by providing interactive media to facilitate communication and learning.Teachers need tailored applications that provide appropriate learning environments withtransparentinterfaces.The diversity of characteristics encountered by children with learning and communicationdisordersmaypresentanextrachallengeforthedesignofICT-basedapplicationsandsystemssuch as adaptive hypermedia and virtual reality applications as well as real time dynamicaffectivesystems.ButanICT-basedlearningenvironmentandaneducationalsystemingeneralthat does not acknowledge and address the specific, individual differences and needs ofstudentswithlearningandcommunicationdisorders,infactexcludesandprohibitsthemfromachievinganormallevelofpersonalself-sufficiencyandsuccessintheirlifeandthecommunity.Importantresearchtopicsareraisedanddiscussedinthisworkasfaras itregardstheuseofICT-based environments for childrenwith learning and communication disorders. Firstly, it isthe attitudeof these students against technology. This knowledgewill inform researchers tothinkof thetypeofsystemswillbedesigned.Secondly, it is thepedagogicalapproachof thedesigned applications. Is the transfer of well-known teaching interventions into ICT-basedenvironments enough or constructive approaches that promote specific types of interactionandfeedbackareneeded?Thirdly,itistheevaluationofICT-basedenvironmentsthatwillhelpto inform on their design and delivery and improve future efforts. The ultimate goal is tofacilitate the learningenvironmentsof the targetpopulation, assuming that theproblem lieswiththeenvironmentnotthedisorderandthereforeneedsadapting.

Keynote5TechnologyandSportsScience,InnovativeMethodsinMovementAnalysisOrlandoFernandesDepartmentofSportandHealth,ScienceandTechnologySchool,UniversidadedeÉvora,PortugalRoomA–3December|10h30m-11h30mChair:JaimeSampaioAbstractTechnology inSports Sciencehasassumeda strong importancenowadays.Particularly in thebiomechanical analysis of movement with emerging new instruments andmethodologies tobetterunderstandtheoriginandcausesofthemovement.Technologyisasetoftools,methodsandtechniquesthataimtosolveproblemsandwhereverpossiblewithpracticalapplicationofscientificknowledge.Thenewtechnologiesarethefruitofimportant technologicaldevelopmentachievedover therecentyears,andhasa fundamentalroleininnovation.This presentation is an integration of knowledge in the context of the biomechanics andmovementanalysisduringthelast10yearsworkingwithaninnovativemultidisciplinaryteamwhilerespectingtheobjectiveandbalanceofTechnology-Science.In this particular case, the increase of data collected relative to the position of “players”,resultedinthesearchfornewsolutionstoincreaseaccuracyandlowcostinvestmentthroughvideo analysis. This also lead to the development of computational methods for non-linearanalysisthatcanprovideaugmentedinformationandtocontributetonewinterpretations.Thisprocess involved the development of new technologies that resulted in the integration ofmethodologies(know-how)andinstrumentsthatalreadyexisted, innovatingandpromotingawiderapplicabilitythatisanobviouscharacteristicofScience/Technology.
