DS 30.1 Inserts for indexable tooling Introduction There are millions of combinations of insert size, shape and grade to choose from. For a large commercial production facility it is worth getting an accurate match but for the small workshop on a tight budget compromises have to be made, often involving surplus stock or manufacturers’ end-of-line products that are available at a lower price. This data sheet is targeted at the latter category of craft workers who might be looking online at a range of possible inserts that will fit available tools or who plan to make tooling to suit the available inserts. The standard ISO code system is shown but not all manufacturers are listed in the grade chart - only those that occur frequently on sources like eBay. The information was up to date in 2018 but manufacturers add new grades and coatings as a result of their continued research so if an insert is not listed it may predate or postdate the information available at the time of compilation. If you cannot find it here you can always consult their information directly, though the quality of their information does vary considerably! All inserts will wear out eventually. Although a limited amount of resharpening is possible, any coating will be removed in the process so the tip will wear more quickly in subsequent use. Whether this is acceptable will depend on your circumstance. When a carbide insert has reached the end of its useful life it will still contain a considerable amount of tungsten, which is a scarce metal that can be recycled. In large quantities this can give useful income and in small quantities the scrap value should at least cover the postage. On principle though, I would encourage all users to return worn tungsten carbide tooling to a recycler.

Insert grade (manufacturer specific)

Material to be machinedSub-groups within each ISO classification exist but are not detailed here as they are less relevant for the small workshop. Similarly, there are a few more specialist categories omitted for simplicity.

ISO classification Type of workable material

P Steels including carbon and alloy steels, cast steels, malleable iron and martensitic stainless steel (e.g. 431) with hardness upto c. 40HRC

M Stainless steels especially work hardening alloys (e.g. 303, 304, 316)

K Cast irons

N Non-ferrous metals (e.g. aluminium, brass)

S Heat resistant metals super alloys, titanium, tungsten

H Hardened metals hardened steels upto 60HRC

Insert materialMost inserts are made by cementing tungsten carbide powder with cobalt powder at high temperature. Cemented tungsten carbide suits the majority of production applications. To reduce the risk of chipping cemented carbide inserts are manufactured with a small radius on the cutting edge and the radius is increased when coated.

Less common are ceramic and cermet (ceramic+metal) inserts where the ceramic component gives the wear resistance and the metal gives toughness. The ceramic is titanium carbide or titanium carbonitride and the metal is usually nickel. Cermets have characteristics that are suited to smaller workshops with older machines: cermets will operate at a wide range of speeds and will give superior finish at lighter cuts but are not as good as cemented carbides for heavy roughing. They operate to a higher temperature than cemented carbide and so can be run dry but they do not take thermal shock well so intermittent cooling is not recommended.

If carbide/cermet isn’t hard enough, cubic boron nitride or polycrystalline diamond are available at significantly higher cost.

Insert coatingCoating inserts with titanium nitride (TiN), titanium carbonitride (TiCN), titanium carbide (TiC), TiCN-Al2O3, TiAIN and, for specialist materials, TiB2 extends the life of the tips considerably in most applications. Coating also slightly reduces friction but increases the price. Two processes are used for coating inserts: chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and physical vapor deposition (PVD). For the small workshop user there is no significant difference between the coating, though be aware that CVD tends to give a thicker coat with rounder edges compared with PVD. And just to complicate matters, multilayered coating using both processes is also used. As a general rule, if a really sharp edge or fine finish is required use an uncoated or PVD coated insert, but if long life and high removal rates are preferred, use a coated insert. In the following tables I have shown whether an insert is coated but have not distinguished the type of coating.
