By changing over to DryLin® R linear plain bearings, the main -tenance interval for this compaction unit was increased to 2 years, despite heavy soiling from powder particles and abrasiveagents. The shafts of the previous ball-bearing rotation solutionrepeatedly became clogged, which meant that the bearings andshafts had to be replaced every 2–3 months.

The DryLin® standard round bearings consist of a replaceable iglidur®

J liner, that is manufactured to be a mechanical fit into an anodized aluminium adapter. The liner snaps into a groove which provides totalaxial security.DryLin® R linear plain bearings, made from solid polymer, are dimensionally equivalent to standard ball bearings. They are madeentirely out of wear resistant iglidur® J materials and can offer technical advantages in addition to the clear price advantage. Thus,applications in which machine parts are primarily stainless steel, i.e.food and filling equipment, are well suited for the use of solid plasticbearings. An additional weight-saving is also easily obtained. Both types are designed for fitting in housings with the recom-mended tolerance H7. The bearings are secured by circlips in thesame way as with ball bearings. The narrow design of the 02 design series, is pressfit or bonded intothe housing. Standard commercial adhesives can be used for thispurpose.

Dirt, dust, fibres

An important feature of all the linear plain bearings is their tolerance of dirt and abrasive particles. For most conventional bearing systems, the use of wiper or seals is recommended to prevent dirt accumulation. No other system has the design benefits for use in dust, lint, and coarse dirt as DryLin®. The patented design of the bearing surface using individual slide pads connected by thin film sections,provides performance benefits for dirty environments. Dirt, even if itbecomes wet on the shaft, is wiped away by the individual glide pads and is moved into the open areas. The running sections of the DryLin® bear ings then slide on the shaft that has been cleared ofall contaminants.

Split linear bearings

Applications that are on the edge of technical feasibility or in extreme ly harsh environments often require frequent replacement ofthe linear bearings. In many cases, DryLin® can give a multiple increase in the service life. However, in extreme applications, replacement of the bear ings is necessary, even with DryLin®. DryLin® linear bearings can provide considerable cost reductions insuch cases as only the polymer bearing liner has to be replaced. This often means a reduction of more than 90% in replacement partcosts. The iglidur® J liner can be easily replaced, while a ball-bearingcage cannot. The range of split adapters offers even greater cost savings. Shaftsno longer need to be re moved from the housing. The two shells of the adapter can be opened very easily. The high performance polymer bearing inside is split and can easily be pulled off the shaft.Clip a new bearing liner over the shaft, put the two adapter halvestogether, fit – done! With this product line of split DryLin® bearings,installation times can be reduced to a minimum.

Eccentric Forces

To ensure successful use of maintenance-free DryLin® linear bearings, it is necessary to follow certain recommendations:If the distance between the driving force point and the fixed bearingsis more than twice the bearing spacing (2:1 rule), a static friction valueof 0.25 can theoretically result in jamming on the guides. This principleapplies regardless of the value of the load or drive force.

The friction product is always related to the fixed bearings. The greater the distance between the drive and guide bearings, the higher the degree of wear and required drive force. Failure to observe the 2:1 rule during a use of linear slide bearings canresult in uneven motion or even system blockage. Such situations canoften be remedied with relatively simple modifications. If you have any questions on design and/or assembly, please contactour application engineers.

Self-Aligning Bearings

DryLin® R linear plain bearings in the 03 design series offer great advan-tages in applications with parallel shafts. By their geometry, they areable to compensate for alignment and parallelism errors and shouldbe used on the shaft located furthest from the drive mechanism.

The design provides a spherical area on the outside diameter of thealuminium adapter for self-alignment. Reductions in load capacity areprevented, since the shaft always lies on the total projected surface.

Due to the even load distribution over the entire bear ing, edge loadsare eliminated with the self-aligning DryLin® linear bearings. Even in unfavourable conditions, the load is supported by the entire projected surface.

In order to compensate for parallelism errors between two shafts, theouter diameter is designed to be small er than the housing bore diameter by 0.2 - 0.3 mm (de pending on the size). With the use ofmounted O-rings, these bearings have an elastic bearing seat.The clearance between the bearing and housing allows for the maximum compensation of possible shaft mis-alignment.

The DryLin® R self-aligning bearings are supplied hard anodized. Thesesurfaces guarantee the highest wear resistance if the aluminium bearing moves in the hous ing during compensation adjustments.

This application, a rotary transfer machine, seals champagne bottles with corks,aluminium caps and wire braid. The fact that the DryLin® guide systems arelubricant free is important in the food sector, additional benefits include resist -ance to chemicals and cleaning.

L1 – Pressfit bearings

The range of L1 plain bearings are manufactured from the iglidur®

L100 bearing material, which has a higher temperature resistancethan iglidur® J and can be used as a simple press-fit bushing in H7 housing bores, even in linear applications, if the environmental temperature does not exceed 60 °C. L100 is nearly as good as thewear resistance of iglidur® J and the coefficient of friction is highercompared to iglidur® J. The parts consist of two sections: A plainsleeve section for the pressfit function and a ribbed section for therunning surface. The com bination of these two sections makes lowclearances possible. The sliding area consists of individual glide pads,which are connected to each other by thin film sections. These filmsections prevent the individual glide pads from spreading open.These also compensate for expansion of the bearing due to heat ormoisture. The function of the pressfit area, which has a clearancecompared to the shaft, is to secure the bearing in the housing.

Compressive strength

iglidur® plain bearings are homogeneously filled with solid lubricants.In this way, lubricants cannot be removed, even at high loads. Thematerial iglidur® L100 allows an average static surface pressure of70 MPa. However, only half of the bearing surface can carry loadsand this is taken into account in the calculation.

This application from the food industry transfers breads and pastries from oneconveyor to the next. Lubrication is totally prohibited due to food contact. An -other reason for using the DryLin® R linear plain bearings is the resistance tocorrosive cleaning agents. Additional benefits include the reduced designspace required by the iglidur® J bearings and the excellent corrosion resistance.

Coefficients of sliding friction

Plain bearings in the L1 range are designed for running dry againststeel. The best results were obtained with a surface roughness of0.8 μm. For increasing load, the coefficients of friction decrease.Typical values when running dry are μ = 0.2–0.3. With poor qualityshafts, the value can be higher.

Surface speeds

The following table shows possible surface speeds of L1 bearings.The highest permissible speeds are for linear movements.

Operating temperatures

Temperatures affect the compressive strength, the wear and thesecuring of the bearing in the housing. In all tests, a secure pressfitcould be held up to a temperature of 80 °C. At higher temperatures,an additional securing of the bearing is recommended. With effec-tive securing, L1 plain bearings could also be used at temperaturesover 100 °C.

igus® Testing method for measuring the tolerance of DryLin® plain bearings

To ensure the correct function of a DryLin plain bearing, it is neces-sary to use the bearing with a defined minimum clearance. The qua-lity control of this dimension is carried out with a plug gauge test.

For this purpose, specific force is defined with which the plug gaugeis loaded when the plain bearing is tested.

When using a plain bearing (JUM/RJM..) in connection with a housing (RJUM, OJUM, RGA..) the factory tolerance of the housingbore (standard case: H7) is also added to the minimum clearancestated above. The total from these two values then produces the

maximum possible bearing tolerance. Plain bearings of the dimen-sional series “Japan-Std.” (JUJ) are tested according to the same criteria for the JUM plain bearing.
