EVENTPARTNERS

Whether you’re a start-up or a blue-chip, next summer’s diary should be full of red circle events. And they’re all taking place at the International Festival for Business...

If you are interested in new markets in the UK and overseas or want to connect your business with overseas investors – come, and trade together at the International Festival for Business. The event promises to accelerate your global business growth by connecting you with the smartest entrepreneurial minds and best business opportunities in the world.

The International Festival for Business will be the must-attend global business event of the year. The Festival will reflect the agility, innovation, creativity and appetite for business that the UK has.

To make it happen, a delivery team of the highest order has been assembled. Clarion events, the UK’s largest independent events company, has joined forces with Montgomery, the country’s oldest expo company, founded in 1895. Together with Liverpool Vision, they’ll map out 61 days of must- see seminars, expos and events.

For Clarion’s James Gower, it’s proof that this will be a festival that surpasses all expectations.

“The business community is really inspired, already,” he says. “Especially in the way the public sector is engaging meaningfully with the private sector.”

As Gower explains, it’s Clarion’s job to corral a series of events, awards, expos and dinners over a two month period. To that end, he’ll be talking to events which historically move from location to location about the benefits of choosing the International Festival for Business next year. He’ll be helping events already booked into the city to work within the IFB’s broad, business-friendly umbrella, and he’ll be devising brand new events to form the core of the festival’s international offer.

It’s this enticing, summer-long cocktail of must-visit happenings that will combine to create a must attend festival.

“It’s all about clustering similar events together,” he says, “making the event an unmissable place to be for a few days, whether you’re a startup looking for advice, or a multinational looking for new markets. It’s our job to bundle the relevant parts together, and to ensure a tempting cultural offer while they’re here...”

Well, you know what they say about all work and no play. And, as Gower confirms, some of the best deals aren’t struck in the seminars, but in the bars and restaurants afterwards.”

“We’ve taken an inventory of the city, and we’re already at 70 venues,” he says, “ and counting.

I was delighted to have the opportunity to speak alongside the Mayor of Liverpool to start the countdown to the Festival and to highlight the action that the Government is taking to rebalance the UK economy.

As I outlined, the UK is in a global race today with a fight to win contracts around the world and this Government is committed to ensuring that the UK thrives in this race. I was delighted to be able to offer my support for such an innovative event and to meet so many local business representatives who are gearing up to play their part in the Festival and showcase the best that the UK has to offer on an international stage.

Liverpool is a city which showcases Britain at its best because it is smart, go-getting, and entrepreneurial. It accelerates business at pace and is truly global. It is a jewel in the UK’s crown. The city also has a tremendous attitude towards events, and its track record at delivery is second to none.

It’s a view shared by Liverpool Vision’s Ian McCarthy, Director of the International Festival for Business

“The transformation of the city over the last decade, and the speed and scale of improvement in the business environment has fueled our confidence to once again put the city on the international stage,” McCarthy says.

The idea for a festival came from a report penned by Sir Terry Leahy and Lord Heseltine. As part of the Government’s drive to rebalance the economy of the UK, and to help drive prosperity to all parts of the country, there was a strong desire to hold a festival in the north.

When I came into office as Liverpool’s first elected Mayor I knew there was a big job to be done. And the job was this: show the world that Liverpool means business.

Within our city we’ve always known the environment was right for collaboration, for growth, for getting things done.

It’s what made us Liverpool.

LET’S DOBUSINESS

Business is in our blood. But it’s the way we do business that most excites the people who chose to work here.

We’re a human scale city: we work in the real world, forge relationships that matter, and develop strong links with markets from Shanghai to San Francisco.

That’s why, next year, we will warmly welcome the world’s business community - from blue chips to start ups. Poll after poll places Liverpool at the top of the league of friendliest cities. I’m certain the International Festival for Business will prove we’re the most business friendly too.

Liverpool, a city founded on international trade, was the obvious choice - and the city’s world-class arena and convention centre the ideal hub.

“This festival provides the opportunity to promote our vision that the Mersey estuary regains its position as a key global trading centre,” McCarthy says.

“We have a tremendous track record as a host city. We’re not just a single offer destination, we’re the whole package.”

Max Steinberg - CEO Liverpool Vision, David Cameron - Prime Minister, and Joe Anderson - Mayor of Liverpool

McCarthy points to Liverpool’s target- busting tenure as European Capital of Culture, our warmly received presence at the Shanghai World Expo, the hugely successful Global Entrepreneurship Congress, and the way millions came out to welcome 50 foot giants to our city’s streets last summer.

“We’re recognised as a safe pair of hands,” he says, “and we know how to cope with big ticket events.”

The transformation of the city over the last decade, and the speed

and scale of improvement in the business environment has fueled our confidence to once again put the city on the international stage,

Ian McCarthy, Festival Director

And, as events come, they don’t come any

more important than next year’s festival.

There will be literally hundreds of

world-class events attracting 250,0000

visitors from across the globe, and

bringing with it an estimated £100

In tough times, making new connections and navigating new routes to market is crucial. At next summer’s IFB, we’ve no doubt Morgan’s sleek portfolio of classic coupes and thrilling three-wheelers will attract plenty of admiring glances. But, for Managing Director Charles Morgan, the event will represent a cornerstone in his company’s drive for increased productivity.

“We’re not Honda,” he says, “We can’t afford to go to every motor show in the world. It’s an expensive business!”

Instead, Morgan says, the chance to speak to thousands of people in Liverpool will form the central strand of his marketing campaign.

“Companies like ours have a very small marketing budget,” he says, “We need to seize opportunities like this if we’re to survive. Look, it’s tough times out there. We have to react to the market. Greece has gone, Spain’s looking dodgy, we have to shift to new opportunities fast if we’re to grow,” he admits.

It helps when you produce one of the most delightful cars currently in production - Morgan’s delightfully quirky three wheeler has proved to be an instant hit, perfectly encapsulating this indomitable British car brand’s heritage and sheer driving excitement.

“We’re a lean workforce, and we can react to the market,” Morgan says, “We haven’t overstretched ourselves. For us, it’s about personal service, developing strong bonds with our dealerships, and reacting to the needs of different markets. And the only way to do that is face to face.”

Every country, Morgan says, has a ‘different idea’ about what a car should be. Specifications, emissions, additions: whether it’s the US, Shanghai or

EXPORT PROFILE

It’s a recognised British design classic, but it’s focused squarely on the future. For Morgan Cars the IFB represents the best route to success.

Germany, Morgan has to adapt to the demands of a global customer base.

“We’ve opened a couple of showrooms in China, and we’re thinking about Hong Kong,” he reveals. “But over there, it’s our classic Morgan Coupe that’s in demand. For that market, we’re a historic and highly desirable product, but they still all want an automatic!”

“In many ways, companies like ours represent the ideal template for the Government’s plans for economic growth. We’re a medium sized enterprise, we’ve a reputation for quality, and we’re investing in skills. These are the sort of businesses that really stand to be very successful at the festival.”

It’s little wonder that Morgan’s enthused about next year’s event.

“I’ll be there, flying the flag!” he laughs, “I’m really honoured to be at the launch

event in London, but I can’t wait to return to Liverpool. The camaraderie and atmosphere is hard to beat. I’m convinced it will be a great platform for us, and for the country.

“Britain’s build quality is first rate. We have the best schools and universities, and it’s a great time to be a designer. You only have to look at the success of Jaguar Land Rover. Events like this are our chance to show the world just what’s stirring here.”

Whereas in Germany and the US, it’s Morgan’s sportier new models that are causing a stir in the motor press. It’s safe to assume, then, that Morgan’s Malvern Hills workshop is no ordinary production line. But it all adds to a healthy order book.

“We employ a highly skilled workforce, we produce a relatively affordable luxury product, and we’ve got global appeal,” Morgan says, revealing that 70% of his cars are exported.

For them, next year’s International Festival for Business is an opportunity to show the world that, when it comes to business opportunities, we’re the complete package.

It’s thanks to top-flight companies such as Hill Dickinson that the region is not only a great place to do business, but it’s the equal of London in every way - except price. “In a global market, a solid legal footing is every bit as important as finding the right business deal,” says Hill Dickinson’s Head of Commercial Business Services, Stephen Lansdown.

For this company, next year’s International Festival for Business will provide an unparalleled opportunity to show the world that, when it comes to international trade, we run a tight ship.

“Our approach has always been to develop relationships where our strengths are. Historically speaking, that’s been in shipping and maritime. But that’s a great base to start,” he says. “Maritime law is a complex and essential cog in international trade, and we’re recognised as a world leader.”

“The festival will allow us to look at developing greater opportunities with our existing markets, and it’s going to offer us opportunities for internationally based businesses.”

“Basically,” he says, “if businesses like what they see, they’ll look to locally

Think of trade and, chances are you think of ‘things’. Products being bought and sold. Import and export. Stuff.

But, behind every good business is an equally important support structure of services. Logistics, legal frameworks, contracts and transportation - the cornerstones of any watertight supply chain.

Getting things done. Making things happen. Liverpool knows a thing or two about it. We built a city on trade - on helping to lubricate the wheels of industry. And Liverpool headquartered law firm Hill Dickinson is one of our greatest assets, and proof positive that the International Festival for Business isn’t just about the right stuff, it’s about the right services too.

For over 200 years, the firm has been helping industry, particularly the maritime industry, run smoothly - from ensuring the safe passage of cargo, to helping make contracts (as well as ships)watertight.

These days, the firm is a globally recognised legal powerhouse. In addition to its UK network of offices, Hill Dickinson has bases in Athens, Singapore and – soon – Monaco.

Their history may be in shipping, but as a full service commercial law firm they’ve won awards across a range of specialisms. The team at their sleek Liverpool offices works with major corporations and PLCs across the globe.

ANDbased firms to provide their professional services. Just as the windfarms offshore have helped green businesses to cluster around here, so increased trade can help generate increased services. The two stand to benefit from each other.”

As Stephen says, when it comes to aligning with the IFB, Hill Dickinson’s core strengths lie in three key areas:

Inward investment into the UK helping international businesses set up here by providing UK based legal support.

External development helping UK based clients wanting to expand their trade outside of the UK.

International support winning international clients, and providing legal service and support for their overseas interests.

“Overseas, we’ve already seen how positively the festival is being received,” he says. “We hosted a business delegation from Indonesia, whose remit was to look at investment into the region, and they left the city with a view to looking at opportunities for Indonesian companies to use the festival as a platform to launch businesses here. So, yes, the event is already making waves.”

With every new business deal, whether it’s selling widgets or offering logistics, it all starts with making contacts.

For this company, next year’s International Business Festival

will provide an unparalleled opportunity for this company to show the world that, when it comes to international trade, we run a tight ship.

DRAWING

FROM 2012INSPIRATION

Trade coupled with investment remain central to the UK’s growth prospects, that’s why the International Festival for Business, hosted in Liverpool, is so important and why UKTI is supporting the Festival and looking forward to showcasing UK business opportunities around the world.

UKTI’s key priorities include increasing the number of SMEs that export, and doubling exports to £1 trillion by 2020. We also aim to continue to attract increased levels of Foreign Direct Investment of high quality and value to the UK.

2012 was a year when the best of Britain was on show to the world. Our aim is that the positive attitude and confidence in Great Britain demonstrated during London 2012 will be replicated in the International Festival for Business in Liverpool in June and July 2014.

The Festival will bring key, particularly emerging markets and opportunities to the UK, and provide the opportunity for UK business to demonstrate strengths and capabilities to the world. To this end, it was confirmed in January 2013 that the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) would support the International Festival for Business. The organisation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Liverpool Vision, at the Annual CII Conference in Agra, to promote the Festival as a catalyst to increase trade and investment and

promote stronger links between India and the UK.

The International Festival for Business will build on the UK‘s historic reputation as a centre for global trade and UKTI will be hosting a number of events targeted at inspiring businesses to look at the opportunities that the new high growth markets hold as well as providing a series of workshops on areas of interest for firms considering exporting for the first time.

We also hope to attract number of businesses looking to invest in the UK and look forward to welcoming international business visitors as well as sharing in the anticipated return on investment.

The focus of the Festival will be on sectors in which the UK excels including life sciences, advanced manufacturing, professional and financial services and creative and digital sectors. The Festival provides an outstanding opportunity to showcase UK capability to the world and to demonstrate how attractive the country is as a destination for Foreign Direct Investment. We look forward to working with the Liverpool City Region and partners to make the Festival the place to be for international businesses in 2014 and capturing the benefits to the UK economy.

Building bridges between Liverpool and Asia is something we’ve been doing for centuries. So it’s no surprise that, at next summer’s Festival, India’s blue chip industries will be building on the past, and looking to the future.

There has never been a more important time for international business. Following the global crisis of 2008-09, world trade growth has recovered to levels of around 2.5% in 2012 and is expected to rise by over 4% in 2013.

between India and Liverpool and the UK and we will build on this agreement to ensure there is a strong presence from this emerging global power at the Festival next year.”

“ Peel’s recent £300m commitment to the expansion of the Port of Liverpool also highlighted at the conference, will ensure that Liverpool can accommodate the next generation of supertankers. That investment provides the most tangible example of the international trade ambitions of the Liverpool City Region. Infrastructure drives economic growth and that infrastructure needs to provide that two way street.”

Liverpool’s links with Asia are deep and strong. The City has always looked East to secure trade and forge lasting business partnerships – many of the city’s most venerable companies have their roots thousands of miles east of the Port’s world famous Waterfront.

So it’s heartening to see the bonds are felt just as strongly on the shores of the Indian Ocean as they are on the banks of the Mersey.

India’s equivalent of the CBI, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) recently welcomed a Liverpool delegation – an advance party planning for next summer’s International Festival for Business.

Liverpool, keen to demonstrate how important India is to the UK economy was the guest of Rajive Kaul, past president of the CII, and current chairman of one of India’s most successful group of companies, the Nicco Corporation.

Clearly, Liverpool is not alone in recognising the potential for mutual

economic benefits from India’s growing economy. But, with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Liverpool freshly signed – indicating a desire for the two markets to work towards new business deals – the City is in a better position than most.

“I assure you we’ll act on this MoU,” Kaul informed the CII Conference, “and through our office in London we’ll get businesses from all over India to come on trade delegations to Liverpool. We’ll walk together on a two way street.”

How important is an event like this to the Indian economy? Kaul is tantalizingly frank: “Everybody in India is an entrepreneur,” he reveals, “It’s just some are better at it than others.”

Next summer, they’re all welcome in Liverpool.

The Memorandum formed part of the CII’s annual partnership summit, attended by the cream of the Asian business world, Heads of States and Governments, Trade Ministers & industry leaders from across the world. As a platform for next year’s festival it was invaluable – and the

delegation’s enthusiastic reception by global powerhouses such as TATA, and Infosys highlighted the scale of the opportunity.

The Liverpool presentation took place during a specially convened session, and included a video of the speech by Prime Minister David Cameron, endorsing IFB 2014 as a key event in the UK’s business calendar.

Kaul, who chaired the session, attended also by Malvinder Mohan Singh, the chairman of the CII North India, added: “The UK government and business community is a very welcoming environment for Indian investors and entrepreneurs. IFB 2014 will be a major catalyst which will spur investment, partnership and innovation.”

Liverpool Vision’s Ian McCarthy, IFB 2014 Festival Director said: “We used this opportunity to promote the Festival to Indian cities and firms under the theme of the CII annual summit ‘global partnerships for enduring growth.’

“This MoU with the CII is an alliance that can boost trade relationships

We’ll act on this agreement, and walk together on a two way street

inspired many of the region’s businesses, and Accelerate 2013 will build upon this legacy

Max SteinbergChief Executive of Liverpool Vision

And with a blockbuster session of speeches, panel discussions and interactive Q&As in the pipeline, inspiration certainly shouldn’t be hard to find. Confirmed speakers for the main event on June 27th include:

Lord Green, Minister for Trade and Investment and former Chairman of HSBC;

Sherry Coutu, angel investor and Advisory Board-member of LinkedIn; and Ajaz Ahmed, the advertising whiz kid who last year sold a majority stake in his digital agency AKQA for £348m.

The festival is set to announce its main keynote speaker when tickets go on sale next month – and we’ve been told to expect someone big.

A CITy’S VISION, A NATION’S GROWTH

In line with its aim of championing growth, Accelerate will also assemble a new group of Britain’s brightest businesses. Carefully selected for their rapid ascent to the top, the ‘Accelerate 250’ will be Britain’s community of proven performers.

Brought together for an interactive session designed to open the door to new ways of thinking, the festival aims to inspire those already making their mark on the national and international stage to aim for yet greater heights.

But the ambition of Accelerate isn’t limited to the four walls and one day of June 27th. The festival aims to echo the success of last year’s GEC fringe by giving over the three preceding days to a wide range of grass roots events of all shapes and sizes.

To that end, the festival organisers are soon to embark on a campaign to activate the city, its businesses, universities, colleges and networks, firm in the belief that recovery starts on the doorstep.

AN ENDURING LEGACy

Designed as an annual event for the city of Liverpool to enjoy for many years to come, Accelerate will also act as a crucial stepping-stone to Britain’s biggest, most ambitious business event 2014 – the International Festival for Business.

Taking place almost exactly a year before the ‘world’s largest global gathering of business minds’ gets underway, Accelerate will get the countdown to the Festival up and running with an evening event for 500 of the festival’s key partners, event organisers and backers.

“Accelerate will mark the road to 2014”, Steinberg said, “further consolidating Liverpool’s position as a globally renowned hub for business.”

And with the organisers of Accelerate 2013 already planning their 2014 contribution, that position looks very strong indeed. Accelerate 2013 will take place from 24-27 June 2013.

For more information, including speakers, news and ways to get involved, visit www.accelerate2013.co.uk. you can also follow us on twitter @accelerate2013.

‘Accelerate 2013’ is Britain’s first festival for high-growth business. Its tagline, ‘passion, performance, power’, gives a sense of what it’s all about: gutsy

ambition, a constant striving to improve, the will to win.

ACCELERATINGA COURSE FOR

GROWTHAs economic recovery continues to prove elusive and the GDP lever hovers around the zero mark, you could forgive many British businesses for remaining pessimistic about their future.

Some, however, are bucking the trend. Refusing to succumb to the prevailing mood and instead setting their sights on fast growth and ever-improving performance, these ambitious few are the focus of a new festival launching in Liverpool this June.

‘Accelerate 2013’ is Britain’s first festival for high-growth business. Its tagline, ‘passion, performance, power’, gives a sense of what it’s all about: gutsy ambition, a constant striving to improve, the will to win.

The observant among you will notice that the last of these tags – ‘the will to win’ – bears an uncanny resemblance to that of another recent Liverpool business event: the Global Entrepreneurship Congress.

This is no accident. The GEC – which saw 3,000 delegates from around the world descend on the city to hear from knock-out speakers such as Sir Richard Branson and Martha Lane Fox – is the undoubted inspiration for Accelerate.

Draping the city in a warm glow of optimism and providing an economic boost to the tune of £500,000, it’s no surprise that Liverpool wanted to repeat the success in 2013.

“The Global Entrepreneurship Congress 2012 inspired many of the region’s businesses, and Accelerate 2013 will build upon this legacy”, says Max Steinberg, Chief Executive of festival organisers Liverpool Vision. “Inspiration is an important component of continued business success.”
