The remaining raised planting beds were topped up with planting mix and soil mounded between them was cleared out Galangal, ginger, Vietnamese coriander, lemon grass, garlic and Kangkong were planted and the beds mulched with straw More shade cloth was installed over our raised planting beds Facts about the vegetables we planted on Saturday: Kangkong (Ipomoea aquatica) is a semi-aquatic water vegetable that can be stir fried or eaten raw. Kangkong can be harvested all year round. Galangal or Blue Ginger is used in Tom Yum soups or as tea. From the same family as ginger, however has a stronger peppery, citrus taste. Lemon Grass is a native of India and is widely used in Vietnamese and Thai cooking. It has a citrus flavour and can be dried and powdered, or used fresh. Lemon grass is commonly used in teas, soup and curries. Vietnamese Coriander is a herb whose leaves are used in Southeast Asian cooking. It is commonly eaten fresh in salads (including chicken salad). Also a big thanks to Eric who worked at the farm during the week and made our log seats for the children. Thanks to Michelle for donating galangal, ginger, lemon grass and Vietnamese coriander and Trevor (Karen’s neighbour) for donating tomato seedlings. Our working bees are scheduled once a month on the first Saturday of the month and everyone is more than welcome to come along. Dates for 2010 are 5 June, 7 August, 4 September, 2 October, 6 November and 4 December. All family members are welcome to attend. Last week was International Compost Awareness Week. At Driver we commenced our whole school compost program. Some of the Year 6 students from Room 22 helped design information labels for compost buckets and explained their purpose to classes when they distributed them to every classroom. So far our composting efforts have been very productive. Sherrida Edgecombe Farm Driver Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Coordinator Karen Johnson Farm Driver Project Manager

FROM THE PRINCIPAL & COUNCIL CHAIRPERSON

SCHOOL COUNCIL’S COMPULSORY SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY

Recently there have been an increasing number of students out of school uniform. As all parents/guardians sign our uniform policy when enrolling their children, could everyone please ensure compliance with this policy. This policy enhances two of our school values, safety in the playground and respect of our school. Our Leadership Team will be following up with parents directly as it is a parental responsibility. Students out of uniform must stay in the designated safe areas during play periods. The Driver Primary School Council has endorsed a compulsory school uniform policy. The school prides itself on its spirit of unity and pursuit of excellence and believes in high standards of personal conduct. It is, therefore, an expectation that each student wears the Driver Primary School shirt, either royal blue shorts, royal blue skorts, royal blue skirt or the Driver Primary School dress. In cooler weather, this applies to royal blue track pants/leggings or red / royal blue warm long sleeved jumpers/jackets over their uniform. Denim is not permitted. Hats and appropriate footwear are mandatory for all students. Hats must be worn in any activity undertaken outside the classroom and also at recess and lunch time. Sneakers or sports shoes are required for any Physical Education class or Farm class. Thongs and masseur type shoes are not acceptable footwear. We hope that your child’s time at Driver Primary School will be both educationally productive and personally fulfilling. Both new and second hand uniforms can be purchased at our front office in the administration building. CARPARK SAFETY UPDATE! Our car parks are now back to normal with the drop off/pick up area operating near the community hall and the Short Term (10 minute) car park back in front of the office reception area. Thanks everyone for your patience and adherence with our interim arrangements! JOIN OUR WALK THROUGH FARM DRIVER & OUR BUILDING CONSTRUCTIONS At 6.30pm on Wednesday 19 May our school community members are welcome to come and walk through to view the progress on both of these exciting projects. Please meet at the Farm at 6.30pm and we’ll finish in the library at 7.00pm in time to start our monthly Council meeting from 7.00 – 8.30pm (babysitting is provided). NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM OF LITERACY AND NUMERACY (NAPLAN) Thanks to parents for ensuring your children were at school on time each day so that they could participate in the NAPLAN assessments. Also special thanks to our Assistant Principal Alison Buchanan, to our relaxed students and our efficient staff for such a smooth roll-out of the assessments! STEPHANIE ALEXANDER VISIT 10JUNE 2010 Great news is that Stephanie Alexander, renown chef and sponsor of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program is visiting to see our progress. DEFENCE FAMILIES UPDATE

The year is moving at full speed with many of our soldiers training all over Australia and some overseas. If a serving member is away, please let me know if your child is unset-tled, I have some resources to help make this absence a little easier. If the member is away for more than 4 weeks, the children are entitled to a FREE bear and book pack. I have a Family Support Registration form for you to fill out to access this.

Every Thursday from 8.30am, join us for a cuppa and chat. Younger children are more than welcome and we have a box of toys for them to play with.

My hours at Driver are Tuesday and Thursday from 8.30am until 2.30pm. I can be con-tacted on 8935 9000 or by email on [email protected]

PARCS Rugby League Sports Update Isaako Teauti, Jaiden Hussien-Rogers and Elijah Simpson were part of the 2010 PARCS Rugby League team. The team went away from the 28th-30th of April to play in Alice Springs at Anzac Oval. The team contained students from a number of Palmerston and Rural Schools including Bakewell Primary, Humpty Doo Primary and Taminmin College. The boys all played well throughout the 3 day carnival. The PARCS team went into the last day undefeated. The boys were especially excited on the last day, to see if they could go throughout the whole competition undefeated. In the end, PARCS won the carnival undefeated! A congratulations goes out to our three Driver Boys, Isaako, Jaiden and Elijah, who played hard, behaved well and represented Driver with pride. Congratulations also to Isaako and Elijah, who were selected as part of the NT Under 12 Rugby League team to compete in Australian Championships in Adelaide in August.

Toothy tips

Teeth help in the production of normal clear speech. They are also important in maintaining normal, symmetrical facial appearance by giving support to the tissues of the face. Remember to look after your child’s teeth - they are important! Their smiles and health would not be the same without them.

The teeth, the jaw and the tongue together perform some quite important functions: forming sounds, chewing and swallowing food, tasting and touching. A healthy mouth is necessary for all these functions, and of course, for a pleasant appearance. It is important to maintain the health and structure of the mouth from birth so that these functions can develop satisfactorily.

School Oval Now Open! By our Year 6 Roving Reporter Jake Phillips The School oval is now open again. The oval was closed because of the trucks and cars going through the small road in the middle of the oval and courts. It was too dangerous for the students to be passing through. The students should still be very careful crossing this road.

The trucks have been going through to help make our new extension to the library. The extension is going well and should be finished by the end of Term 2. The extension is also for Mrs Edgecombe’s new classroom. Mrs Edgecombe is currently in the demountable classroom and is sharing it with the After School Care.

The oval has been re-opened because the biggest of the vehicles have finished their work. We still want students to take care when crossing this road because we have had some very near misses with some children.

Some of the workers have been making complaints about students throwing objects over the fence. Please DO NOT throw anything over the fence or enter any construction sites because it can be very dangerous. Thank you for your co-operation and patience while these extensions and buildings are being made.
