Dr. William Stephen Webb1879- 1952Public Service
The community referred to him as their "family doctor'', butthe esteem in which they held him showed clearly that theyconsidered him more "family" than "doctor''. All his life, "Doc"Webb's patients came first, last, and always. He neverceased to give the best he had or look for the best in others.
Son of Dr. William George and Louisa Atkinson Webb, hewas born in Cameron Ohio, January 1, 1879, the youngestof five children. He received his early education there andwas a graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeonsof Baltimore, MD (Now known as John's Hopkins) in theclass of 1904.
Dr. Webb practiced medicine in Belmont, West Virginia from1904 to1909 unti l encouraged by a colleague, Dr O. D.McCoy, to move to Warwood, "a growing community", andpractice medicine.
Dr. Webb volunteered as the Warwood High schoolPhysician from the inception of the school till the day of hisdeath. He also provided his services to the Ohio countyDraft Board as a member of the U.S. Volunteer MedicalService Corps for World Wars | & ll. He was a member ofthe Ohio County MedicalAssociation, West Virginia Medical
Association, the West Virginia State Gladioli Association and the American Rose and Peony Society. He alsoserved as a director of the Bank of Warwood, a member of the Warwood Boosters club, and a member of theFirst Christian Church.
Dr. Webb provided care to everyone in the community regardless of race or social stature. His interest waspersonal and intimate, with a deep desire to care for his people before any concern for his own financial gain.Many times a patient would have trouble getting him to accept his rightful fee. Sometimes his advice was,"Don't pay now; it's cheaper if you wait for a bill." Then oftentimes he would "forget" to send a bill. lf a patientcould not afford their medication, he would pay for it himself. lf a family was having financial trouble, he madesure they had food on the table.
He never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it. Dr. Webb was a devotee of growingexquisite flowers, especially gladioli and roses. He produced prize-winning blooms that brought inestimabledelight to everyone who passed his home. He constantly worked to create a new vision of beauty through thehybridization of numerous species of gladiola, peonies roses, lilacs, and iris. His award winning hybridsbrought him great notoriety in horticultural circles. His most famous hybrid, the "White Symphony" gladiola,won the highest award given by the National Council of state garden clubs. He also named one of his peonyhybrids for the renowned opera singer, Eleanor Steber. This flower has taken awards in several peony shows.
His farm purchased in 1946 was known as the "Webb Farm" for several years. lt was purEhased by theArchdioese of Wheeling and is now known as "Paul Vl Pastoral Cented'.
Dr. Webb practiced medicine in the time when doctors still made house calls. He answered his patients callsat all hours of the night in all kinds of weather. In fact, he did this without regard for his own health even to theend, for his last act was to answer the call of a patient, barely make it home, and take to what proved to be hisdeathbed.
