Background:
I am Senior Lecturer and Cancer Institute NSW Clinical Research Fellow in the
Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney. I am also a Staff Specialist in Palliative
Medicine and Head of Department of Palliative Care at Royal North Shore
Hospital. I spend 50% of my time in clinical palliative medicine practice and 50%
in research. I have worked in collaboration with CeMPED (previously MPRU) since
2000, including completion of a PhD entitled "Enhancing Doctor Patient
Communication in Palliative Medicine".
Currently I am undertaking further research, funded by the NMHRC and the
Cancer Institute NSW, on issues relating to discussion of prognosis and end-of-life
issues with palliative care patients and their families. I am passionate about
research that may enhance the palliative care of patients and their families facing
an advanced progressive life limiting illness.
Research Interests:
Communication regarding prognosis and end-of-life issues
Enhancing psychological care of patients and families facing a life limiting illness,
including bereavement support for families
Enhancing systematic issues to optimise care for patients in their final weeks to
months of life
Physical symptom management
