Many long-time DPIE supporters have be-come accustomed to the logo representing our organization. Logos are typically updat-ed every so often to keep up with the times. DPIE is no exception. The current logo was last updated in 2007. It has served us well.

Although we love our current logo, a lot has changed in the past seven years. Our organi-zation has grown as we have created new ways to give back to the Dublin Unified School District. For example, we’ve updated programs and started new ones, including the Enrichment Academy. The world of com-munication has also changed. In 2007, Face-book had been publically open for only four months and now over a billion people use it every month. In 2007, spending on digital advertising was $21 billion and in 2013 this amount had increased to $503 billion! Peo-ple are talking online all the time.

We now need a new logo that both reflects what DPIE is today and is more helpful for communicating in the digital age. Our new logo should reflect the updated version of the DPIE you know today and still maintain the look you have grown to expect.

In January, we will start officially rolling out a new DPIE logo (see it below). Let us know what you think! Tell us on our FACEBOOK page. If you haven’t yet liked us on Face-book, please do—and leave your comments.

As we bid farewell to our hard-working old logo, we’d like to point out a fun-fact. Even after seeing our old logo hundreds of times many may not know that the “leaf” over the apple is not a leaf at all. It is, in fact, a brief-case! We recognize that the briefcase has also gone out of style. But instead of ex-changing our briefcase for a smartphone we thought the leaf would do just fine.

Board and Staff News

Dear Friends,

As we all conclude a busy season and get ready for a fresh start, I wanted to take a moment and wish each of you a very Happy New Year.

Thanks to all of the individual and busi-ness contributors who have shown sup-port for DPIE and our public schools dur-ing 2013. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful community that makes education for our children a priority.

As we reflect on 2013, we see that it was another successful year for DPIE and our schools. Continued support for fundrais-ing activities and donations from local businesses have allowed DPIE to contin-ue to make progress in school program-ing such as the Enrichment Academy, Career Pathways, and re-invented Art Programs. Without your support nothing would be possible and we extend our sincerest appreciation.

2014 is sure to bring many opportunities and challenges for all of us. DPIE is no different. We continue to look for op-portunities to add value to our children and schools and are always challenged to find the resources to fulfill so many of the needs within our schools.

Whether it is your time and knowledge you can offer as a volunteer or a financial contribution to help fund programs, please consider DPIE and our public schools as a worthy organization when you make commitments for 2014.

Best Wishes to You and Yours in 2014,

Jeff

Janet’s New Role In our Q3 newsletter, we announced the retirement of former DPIE executive direc-tor, Janet Lockhart. We are happy to an-nounce that we spoke too soon! Janet has agreed to stay on with DPIE in a newly creat-ed role of Enrichment Academy Superinten-dent.

As DPIE approaches the Academy’s third year and now that the Enrichment Academy has received its WASC accreditation, Janet will be responsible to grow the program regionally and create a more robust oper-ating infrastructure. She will oversee the Academy program day-to-day in 2014. In her new role, Janet will report to DPIE’s Ex-ecutive Director, Fawn Holman.

January Visioning Retreat Planned On Saturday, January 18, 2014, the DPIE Board of Directors will meet for a half-day Visioning Retreat. The purpose of this retreat is to review our current mission and it’s Four Pillars (CARE = Career Exploration for Stu-dents, Arts Education, Resources for Educa-tors, and Education Support); to recommit to or adjust these core elements; and to identi-fy pragmatic ideas to put these elements into practice. If you have ideas for DPIE, please contact Fawn Holman.

The DPIE Celebrity Waiter dinner event held on October 25th at the Shannon Center was again a smash success. This year’s “Most Appreciated Waiter” (i.e., the biggest fund-raiser!) was Dublin City Council Member Abe Gupta. A shout out also goes to the Best Overall Table: Club Sport (“Under the Sea Prom” theme); Funniest Table: Brandon McGuire (“Caveman / Volcano” theme); and Most Spirited Table: Juliette Goodrich and Autumn Johnson & their “Roller Derby Girls”

A big thanks goes to our Head Celebrity Waiter, Supervisor Scott Haggerty, and all the supporters listed on pages 2, 3, & 4.

Third Graders at Dublin Elementary show their enthusiasm for their new dictionaries.

By Rich Boschetti

For the 6th year in a row DUSD third graders received Dictionaries in an ongoing partner-ship between the Rotary Club of Dublin and Dublin Partners in Education.

Given the broad use of computers these days, some might think dictionaries are a thing of the past, but you sure couldn’t tell that from the reaction of our young readers. One excited Kolb Elementary recipient ex-claimed, “Thank you so much for the dic-tionary, the pictures in it are so cool! It is so nice of you guys to give the dictionaries to us for free. There are so many words in it and the definitions are easy to read.” Anoth-

er young reader from Frederiksen Elemen-tary said, “It makes me feel so proud when I open the book and see my name on the front page, it feels like I’ve been rewarded. I love looking up words like dyslexia and kookaburra. It’s easy to read and the pic-tures are really cool.”

The Dictionary Project originated as an effort by the Dublin Rotary to help young people learn the power of words. Since the program’s inception, over 3,300 third grad-ers have been given dictionaries. “Words and how we use them make a difference in our lives”, explained Dublin Rotary Presi-dent, Janine Thalblum. “Our goal is to help

make sure kids have the tools they need to be successful in school. With just a little bit of an investment, we can impact every stu-dent in our school district.”

Dublin Rotary allocated $7,300 and DPIE contributed $1,800 for the grade-appropriate dictionaries for this year’s 725 recipients. This year’s distributions were huge events that felt like parties as each of the schools celebrated Dictionary Day. “The kids just love getting these books,” said DPIE Executive Director, Fawn Holman. “It is so much fun to watch them open their books and start searching for words as soon as the dictionaries are in their hands.”

ture Painting, Bookmaking, Street Chalk Art and Decorative Pot Mosaics (offered as part of a campus beautification project) are planned for the remainder of the school year. Plans for similar offerings at Fallon Middle School are in the works and we hope to kick off the Fallon program with the New Year. A small supply fee is collected from the participating students and the DPIE Board will donate 100% of these proceeds back to each school’s PFC.

Kevin Grier, Principal at Wells Middle School, said, "I am so happy to have the art program return to Wells as an elective op-tion for students. Thanks to DPIE, Wells is able to offer art as an after-school enrich-ment class so that even more students can explore their creative talents.”
