When we met with them we told them about how their next four years would fly by! Up- on reflection, it actually seems like just a couple of yesterdays ago that we stood in front of the seniors in the Class of 2015 and said something very similar. Now here we are in May with graduation just ahead on the horizon. Many times we’ve asked ourselves where the time went. During these next few weeks many of our seniors will go through this amazing transformation. For 3 ¾ years all they could think about is moving on with their lives and having school end. For many of them, during this last ¼ of the year they lament about not wanting to leave. This is also the time of the year when we realize that we are not really ready for them to leave either. Of course it is inevitable we’ll all need to find ways to cope and to get ready for the end of the year. This year our school year ends on Tuesday, June 23 at Fermi and on Wednesday, June 24 at Enfield High School. We will graduate at 7:00 PM at both schools. In closing, we hope all of you have a restful and productive summer. We want each parent and student alike to know how much we value the relationships that we have developed over our time as principal. We firmly believe that our students are some of the finest in the state. They excel in academic achievement, musical and dramatic performances, and in athletics. Together parents, students, and everyone who works at Fermi and Enfield High School make up a “family”, a family we are all luck to be part of. As the closing of Fermi draws nearer we will be trying to do a number of things to both honor the closing of Fermi and more importantly begin to create that unified feeling of pride that we know will be a hallmark of the New Enfield High School. Principals’ Message

From Andy Longey, Principal at EHS and Paul Newton, Principal at Fermi

Dear Parents, Students, and Friends,

It seems like just yesterday when we met our incoming ninth graders for the first time.

When we met with them we told them about how their next four years would fly by! Up-

on reflection, it actually seems like just a couple of yesterdays ago that we stood in front

of the seniors in the Class of 2015 and said something very similar. Now here we are in

May with graduation just ahead on the horizon. Many times we’ve asked ourselves

where the time went. During these next few weeks many of our seniors will go through

this amazing transformation. For 3 ¾ years all they could think about is moving on with

their lives and having school end. For many of them, during this last ¼ of the year they

lament about not wanting to leave. This is also the time of the year when we realize that

we are not really ready for them to leave either. Of course it is inevitable we’ll all need

to find ways to cope and to get ready for the end of the year. This year our school year

ends on Tuesday, June 23 at Fermi and on Wednesday, June 24 at Enfield High School.

We will graduate at 7:00 PM at both schools. Exams will begin on Tuesday, June 16 for

our seniors and on Friday, June 19 for everyone else.

It is our most sincere hope that you have enjoyed your relationship with Enrico

Fermi and Enfield High Schools this year. In spite of our constant worries about the

budget, standardized testing, and the closing of Fermi, we have had a wonderful school

year. In closing, we hope all of you have a restful and productive summer. We want

each parent and student alike to know how much we value the relationships that we

have developed over our time as principal. We firmly believe that our students are some

of the finest in the state. They excel in academic achievement, musical and dramatic

performances, and in athletics. Our robotics program is second to none in the nation.

We have much to be proud about. The other thing that we are most proud about is our

supportive and positive parents. Together parents, students, and everyone who works at

Fermi and Enfield High School make up a “family”, a family we are all luck to be part of.

As the closing of Fermi draws nearer we will be trying to do a number of things to both

honor the closing of Fermi and more importantly begin to create that unified feeling of

pride that we know will be a hallmark of the New Enfield High School.

Sincerely,

Andrew Longey and Paul K. Newton

Real World Experiences for Students

Enrico Fermi High School students, currently en-

rolled in the new "Civil Engineering and Architec-

ture" course, toured the new school construction

site to learn about engineering careers, electronic

3D drawing documentation and commercial con-

struction methods.

The tour started off with a visit to the construction

trailer to learn about the project timeline and the

use of electronic drawing documentation from the

Gilbane Civil Engineers.

Students learned that the 3D software used to de-

sign the new school project is the same as what

they use in the classroom. Students were shown

virtual 3D walkthroughs of the new school on the

electronic touch screen interface.

Students then toured the site, learning about vari-

ous commercial building methods being used on

the site. Visiting the site provided the students

with a real world experience directly related to the

classroom curriculum project they are currently

working on which is a library renovation. The

CEA classes have been visiting the new school con-

struction site throughout the year, thanks to the

Gilbane engineering team.

Fermi’s Shop Rite Award Winners April and May Arianna Davis -12th Grade and

Stacey McCann -9th Grade Arianna is a very nice and pleasant young lady who I

have had the pleasure of having in class for Algebra I and

fortunate enough to advise in the Rachel’s Challenge

Club. When interacting with Arianna you are met with an

amazing smile and a kind word. Arianna has been a mem-

ber of our “Friends of Rachel Club” (FOR Club) for the past

two years. Arianna consistently gives up her time to help

others and to make the lives of people better by performing

targeted acts of kindness and by taking part in a wide varie-

ty of community service activities. At school, along with

being a member of the FOR Club, she also is an active par-

ticipant in our Art Department. She can always be found

working on a project or helping out friends with their art

work. It was during this year’s FOR Club community

events where Arianna has been observed helping out and

going above and beyond while making beautiful informa-

tional banners for the FOR Club programs. She made a

kind and positive impression on her peers as well as her

teachers. Fermi High School is very proud of Arianna’s ac-

complishments and we are very lucky to have her as a stu-

dent and leader at our school.

Stacey is a very nice and positive person who I have had

the pleasure of having in class for Honors Geometry this

year and fortunate enough to advise in the Rachel’s Chal-

lenge Club. When interacting with Stacey you are met with

an amazing smile and a willingness to help. Stacey has

Enrico Fermi Students Travel

Abroad

On April 15th, thirty-three Fermi students

left for a ten-day trip to France and

Spain. After a stop-over in London, they set-

tled into their charming French hotel and

started exploring the famous sites of Par-

is. They enjoyed everything from the Mona

Lisa in the Louvre to macaroons on the

Champs- Elysees. The Eiffel Tower at night

and a day at Versailles were especially fun.

Students participated in activities that

brought French history to life and made what they were seeing throughout Paris more mean-

ingful. From Paris, they took the TGV (a high speed train) to the glitzy resort town of Biar-

ritz, in the southwest of France. There, they ran along the beautifully lit beach at night and

walked the scenic Atlantic coastline in the morning before leaving for St. Jean de Luz (more

macaroons from King Louis XIV’s favorite shop which is still turning them out), and the

Basque country of Spain by bus. Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum constructed of tons of glass

and titanium was a favorite photo shoot before traveling through beautiful Spanish country-

side to Burgos with its spectacular cathedral and pollard trees. Standing outside the cathe-

dral, students were guided through an activity that literally replicated the architectural rea-

soning behind Gothic arches and flying buttresses that they had seen in Notre Dame and now

were next to in Burgos. After a short night, it was on to Madrid. However, there were a

number of stops before they arrived in the Spanish capital: the Roman aqueduct and the

fairytale Alcazar in Segovia; Philip II’s palace, El Escorial; and the Valley of the Fallen, a

massive memorial to those who died in the Spanish Civil War. Once in Madrid, students

were delighted by their hotel which was steps away from the heart of the city. From this cen-

tral location, they visited the famous museums the Reina Sofia and Prado, caught royalty

exiting a children’s literature event, and cooked a delicious meal at a Spanish culinary

school. On their last day, everyone enjoyed traveling to Toledo where they toured the holy

buildings of various religions and shopped at a store where they saw master craftsman actu-

ally fashioning the items for sale from steel, gold, and silver, their craft originating in Da-

mascus and brought to Spain long ago. The final event of the trip was first a lesson in fla-

menco dancing and then a fabulous performance by the professional teachers. Students re-

turned to the U.S. on April 24th, exhilarated but exhausted. The official count for miles

walked: 117. The trip, two years in the planning, was arranged by former World Language

Chair at Fermi, Mrs. Audrey Fay and current English teacher, Mrs. Johna Merritt. Other

chaperones were Nurse Sandy Cimino; former Fermi Spanish teacher, Terry Marak; and two

parents: Mrs. Pattie Schacht and Mr. Gary Lindquist. We had a wonderful guide throughout

the trip who in his farewell said, “Go home and thank the people who made this trip possible

for you.” Let this be that public acknowledgement. To all who contributed to this extraordi-

nary experience, THANK YOU.
