Tata Steel Chess TournamentThe Tata Steel Chess Tournament is one of the most important chess events in the world, with world class players and a large number of amateur events. For two weeks 28 grandmasters playing in two groups (Masters and Challengers) against each other for the title. In addition, there are over 2000 amateurs playing in various tournaments. Besides “the Main Event’ in Wijk aan Zee, the Masters additionally play in two remote locations. In 2017, they will also play in “Special” remote locations.

Chess in Wijk aan Zee

Wijk aan zee village is a part of the municipality of

Beverwijk, located in Midden-Kennemerland, Noord

Holland. The village has approximately 2200

inhabitants. Especially in summer, this seaside resort is

popular among families who go to the beach and active

water sporters.

Since 1968, the Tata Steel Chess Tournament held in

Wijk aan Zee, after it began in 1938 in Beverwijk.

During this time period the tournament has successfully

embedded itself within culture of Wijk aan Zee.

The 79th edition will be held In 2017, making the chess

tournament the longest running sporting event in Netherlands.

Children (learning) chess, concentrate better, solve better

cause-effect problems and control their impulses better .

Tata - Kids of Steel® committed to also involve children in

chess through the tournament, in collaboration with the KNSB

and schools. Together with local companies chess courses will

be organized for primary and secondary schools. It is also

possible for a company to offer a course for children of
