EXHIBITION ABSTRACT

Pressing Print: Universal Limited Art Editions 2000-2010 chronicles the recent decade of artwork published by the renowned American printmaking workshop Universal Limited Art Editions [ULAE]. The exhibition assembles new print works created by the 20th century masters of American Art and emerging artists recently selected to collaborate at Universal. More than just a survey of artwork published since 2000, Pressing Print is a specific examination of ULAE’s ongoing commitment to innovative approaches and techniques in contemporary art making, evident through the works selected. These prints illustrate the impact that artists like Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Helen Frankenthaler, Kiki Smith and Carroll Dunham have had on contemporary art, evident through the work of artists such as Jason Middlebrook, Amy Cutler and Jane Hammond. In addition, the work demonstrates how a new generation of artists has influenced the current trend, in both process and concept. The 52 works selected for the exhibition exemplify why the artwork created at Universal Limited Art Editions has been, and continues to be, a transformative force in contemporary printmaking.

The exhibition will be on view at the Syracuse University Art Galleries February 2 through March 18, 2012.

TRAVEL

The Syracuse University Art Galleries will offer Pressing Print as a traveling exhibition available after April 1, 2012. Working in collaboration with the Syracuse University Art Galleries Traveling Exhibition Program [TRAVEX] and ULAE, Pressing Print will engage a national community of student artists and contemporary print enthusiasts. With the assistance of grants and other funding, the objective will be to offer the exhibition with minimal rental fee and supplemental costs, such as shipping, publication, and installation expenses to the borrowing institutions.

The SUArt Galleries Traveling Exhibition Program has provided affordable exhibitions to small and medium museums and university art galleries for two decades, with a strong focus on works on paper. Recent traveling exhibitions have examined the work of James McNeill Whistler, Georges Rouault, and the German Expressionist movement. Other exhibitions have studied artist portraits and self-portraits, early 20th century images of New York City subways and skyscrapers and 19th century hand-colored Japanese photographs. Pressing Print will continue the high standard of dynamic and thought provoking print exhibitions that have been central to the TRAVEX program.

For more information about TRAVEX, visit the website: travex.syr.edu

CATALOG

An illustrated catalog will be produced to accompany the exhibition. The content will include a brief illustrated history of ULAE, artist biographies and an annotated checklist of the exhibition. Additional contributions may include a forward by Bill Goldston, Director of ULAE, an introduction by Domenic Iacono, Director of the Syracuse University Art Galleries, and a curatorial essay by Andrew Saluti, Assistant Director of the Syracuse University Art Galleries. Design of the catalog will be complete by December 15, 2011 and will be delivered and available for resale no later than January 31, 2012.

PROGRAMMING

In addition to the catalog and web presence of the exhibition, supplemental programs associated with the exhibition will be created to engage the community. These programs will include lectures and events with exhibition artists and organizers. Interviews, podcasts, and other technology-based informational formats will be available in the gallery and online. Specially designed children’s programming will be developed to connect the themes and processes of the exhibition with interactive family events during the exhibition. Lesson plans for scholastic communities and teaching packets aimed at Middle School and High School classes will be developed for the exhibition in Syracuse and will be made available to borrowing institutions.
