Food Loss & Waste (FLW)

Globally, there are 2 very different issues regarding non-edibles:

Loss – When food is not delivered to its intended recipients; occurs at the beginning to middle of the supply chain

Waste – When food is delivered to its intended recipients, but not consumed; occur at the end of the supply chain

Food Loss & Waste (FLW)

Globally, there are 2 very different issues regarding non-edibles:

Developing Countries – Food Loss is the Problem• Over 40% of losses at post harvest handling & processing.

Developed Countries – Food Waste is the Problem• Over 40% of losses at retail and consumer levels.

Value of Food Packaging Around the Globe

“Appropriate packaging helps to reduceFLW at any stage in the food supply chain:”

• Ensures food security and safety• Facilitates economic development & trade• Enhances export competitiveness• Enhances food loss prevention and protection• Enhances logistics management and product

identification• Provides extended shelf-life for consumers

Example: International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)

Problem:

There are two kinds of losses that put rice to waste: physical and quality. Physical losses in Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa reach up to 30%, while reduced quality decreases the price of milled rice by 10-30%.

These losses put farmers on the losing end in terms of income, and negatively affect the supply of rice in the market.

Example: International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)

Solution:

An airtight, reusable plastic bag that protects stored rice from moisture, pests, rats, and keeps rice seedsviable. The IRRI Superbag is now available to Filipino farmers in selected retails stores.

The IRRI Super Bag works by blocking the flow of bothoxygen and water vapor from the outside to the grain. When the bag is properly sealed, farmers can safely store their seeds for 9-12 months without reducing germination rates.

IRRI Super Bags also keep away insects and rats without using chemicals. Whole rice grain recovery after milling is 10-15%.

Example: International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)

Value of the Savings for the Philippines:

• 485,000 hectares of land (1850 sq. miles)

• 3.3 billion m3 of water/year

• 82,500 metric tonnes of methane/year, equivalent to 2.1 million metric tonnes of CO2*

*As a GHG, the IPCC states that methane is about 25 times more potent than CO2 .

Example: Bone-In Ham Packaging

Source: Ron Cotterman, Sealed Air: How Packaging Prevents Waste and Enhances Sustainability, 2011

21 g of packaging protects 3.6 kg of meat.

Bone punctures caused rework and packaging failures. 70% of bone punctures occurred during retail display.

Addition of 25% more packaging (a small patch) reduced damage during retail display by 73%.

The result was a net reduction in total carbon footprint across the supply chain of nearly 6%.

Packaging Helps Save Food

• Food loss in developing countries tends to occur during post-harvest processing and storage while in developed countries food waste tends to occur after food is shipped to consumers

• Packaging can significantly help save food by increasing food security, safety, protection, logistics management and product identification. Packaging can offer leak resistance, tear resistance, hermetic seals, and modified atmosphere for extended shelf-life.

• The significant economic, social and environmental value provided by these packaging opportunities far outweigh the related costs of development, production, and use.
