Market overview

High-performance fibers are generally considered those that exhibit high specifi c strength (tensile-strength-to-weight ratio) combined with high elonga-tion before break, such as p-aramids and high-performance polyethylenes. Their high strength, fl exibility and low density make them especially suitable in advanced composite applications, especially in ballistic-resistant materials, such as body armor and lightweight armor for military vehicles. The term high-performance has also expanded in recent years to include any fi ber material that exhibits a unique performance property; for example, the high-temperature resistance offered by silicon carbide and Nextel™,or the fi re retardance of fi bers like polyphenylene sulfi de (PPS) and polybenzimidazole (PBI).

Although new organic and S-glass capacity expansion has been driven by military and civil defense applica-tions to enhance armor performance, other applica-tions are expanding as well. These include ropes and cordage, tire cords, brake pads, fl ame retardant fabrics, and long-fi ber-reinforced thermoplastics (LFRTs).

Technology, insight, strategy

Fiber suppliers are optimizing fi ber performance through unique fabric designs that employ sophis-ticated weaving and stitching technologies. Further, product manufacturers are developing new fi bers, resin and processing technologies to tailor composites for specifi c applications. High-Performance Fibers 2009 will examine a number of recent product introductions and technologies employed toward these ends, giving attendees a clear picture of the current state of research, product developments and market potential.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear more than 15 presentations on these topics from industry leaders. You will also have access to our exhibit area during all the networking functions, where we will showcase the latest process, material and equipment developments.

At High-Performance Fibers 2009, you will meet:

• Body armor and advanced composite manufacturers • End users and specifying authorities, such as the military (U.S. Army Natick Soldier Center and Army Research Labs) • Prepreg and fi ber suppliers • Military and university R&D specialists and industry analysts • Marketing executives, research directors and manufacturing engineers from the high- performance fi ber industry • Resin suppliers and equipment fabricators

CompositesWorld’s third High-Performance Fibers Conference is a must-attend event for everyone in these critical fi ber market segments.

High Technology Fibers and Fabric Structuresin Body Armor Applications

The use of high-technology fi bers in body armor for ballistic protection has become quite extensive recently. Some of these fi bers include aramids, ultrahigh density polyethylenes, liquid crystalline polyesters and a newly developed fi ber named “M5”.The properties of fi bers, yarns such as fi lament and staple, and woven and nonwoven fabrics made from them will be discussed. The manufacture and the role of weave structure in determining the mechanical and physical properties of fabrics will be presented. The effect of structure of various nonwoven fabrics and the type of bonding on the mechanical properties will also be discussed. Yarn structure, the basic weave design in a woven fabric and the orientation and the type of bonding in a nonwoven fabric play an important role in determining the penetration of a projectile in the complex composite of fl exible fabric arrangement in body armor system.

Key Topics to be covered include: • Fibers — Structure and properties • Yarns — Types of yarns and properties of fi lament and staple yarns • Woven fabrics — Weave structure, manufacture and characteristics of fabrics • Nonwoven Fabrics —Manufacture, structure and properties

Attendees will benefi t by gaining familiarity with types of high tech fi bers, woven fabric structure and manufacture, and the properties of woven and nonwoven fabrics in terms of ballistics applications.

Instructor: DR. BHUVENESH C. GOSWAMI is Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus, in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Clemson University. He received his bachelor’s degree in Textile Engineering and Science from Delhi University. In 1961 he was awarded the only Government of India Scholarship for graduate studies at Bombay University where he received MSc in Textiles in 1963. At that time, he was awarded

the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue doctoral studies at Manchester University, England. Dr. Goswami’s scholarly and academic career in textile science and technology spans a period of over four decades. His early contributions along with those of his graduate students and colleagues were in the fi eld of yarn structure and the translation of fi ber properties in the mechanical behavior of yarns. He co-authored a volume on yarn structure and technology that is considered a classic of technology and has found acceptance as a text worldwide. His work on the fatigue failure of fi bers resulted in the establishment of a laboratory technique to correlate the morphology of fi bers with their failure in use. He collaborated with scientists from Dow Chemical Company over several years, and he is named in fourteen different inventions that were patented by Dow Chemicals. A number of the patents fi led were in connection with the nonwoven structures designed for high temperature insulation. One of the inventions where he is a co-inventor was recognized with a 1989 R & D 100 Award for the new low-density, high-performance insulation. He has made numerous contributions to the published scientifi c literature and is the author of articles in encyclopedias. He is internationally known for his contributions in applying engineering principles to the development of textile structures. He has also contributed a chapter on composites in the CRC Handbook for Mechanical Engineers, 2007.
