Earth, Wind, & Ice: Ancient Climate Change to Periglacial Landscapes South Jersey's cold, dry, and windy Ice Age legacy has few modern terrestrial equivalents. Climate-driven movement of freezing and thawing ground, along with strong winds from the nearby Laurentide Ice Sheet, have helped to fashion the local terrain into the unique world-renowned landscape that we value today as the Pine Barrens—and providing critical habitat for rare, threatened, and endangered plants and animals.

FRST Peer Mentoring/TA Project: From At-risk to Role Model In this project, members of the First Year Studies Program selected successful students from their fall FRST classes to work as peer mentors/teaching assistants in the same class during the spring semester. The students in these spring semester classes benefited from the extra one-on-one support; that was an expected outcome of this high impact practice. However, this was also a transformative experience for the first-year students chosen as Mentor/TAs, who gained considerable confidence and broadened their perspectives. This project, which originated from an AASCU (American Association of State Colleges and Universities) grant has now received temporary, internal funding from the Provost and is part of a pending application for presidential funding.

Writers, Dreamers, Drifters and the Aegean: Swimming Rocks, Hydra, Greece Professor Roessel's students synthesized a series of comparative performances using the literary works of Australian authors Charmian Clift and George Johnston to understand the way in which the married couple's perspectives of life on the island of Hydra differed and. how their relationship suffered as a result. Clift and Johnston's interpretations of the Spilia swimming spot, written by Shilo Previti, is performed by Shilo Previti and Mike Simons.

Paradise Now: Assessing the impact of film pedagogy on Criminal Justice students. The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of viewing a film, Paradise Now, on attitudes towards terrorism in a class of Criminal Justice students, using a survey adapted and modified from previous research. The film itself follows two young men who are offered the opportunity to engage in terrorism while also showing the human side of war, poverty, oppression, and at times, the power of religion.

Public Debates on Black Military Corps during the Haitian Revolution This paper traces the movement of African America military corps (Black pioneers) from the United States to the Caribbean and explores political tensions in Jamaica surrounding their service during the Haitian Revolution. Black pioneers were a unique group of service men and women (mostly ex-slaves) who gained firsthand experience of both the American and Haitian revolutions. The paper argues that while the pioneers' prior exposure to ideologies of the American Revolution were first perceived as nonthreatening, the Haitian Revolution's challenge to slavery as an institution changed public perceptions of their presence in a Caribbean slave society dramatically.

Tyler Black Examining Gender Differences and Views about Sexual Harassment in College Students In the past few years, sexual harassment has gained attention nationally as well as internationally. #MeToo campaign has furthered public discourse not only on social media platforms but also in public domains such as work places, news and media, and importantly within college campus communities. Employing survey methodology at a mid-size University in New Jersey, this study examines views about sexual harassment among college students and corresponding gender differences. Further, this study also analyzes self-reported data on both the victimization and offending patterns of sexual harassment among college students. Policy implications from this study are discussed.

Assessing Undergraduate College Students’ Ability to Evaluate the Quality of Web-Based Sources of Health Information Within the fields of political science and journalism, there has been a great deal of discussion and study about the concept of “fake news” and “alternative facts”, especially in recent years, and this is equally true of web-based sources of health information. This study examined the ability of undergraduate students to assess the quality and accuracy of web-based sources of health information, with results showing that students currently do not possess the skills necessary to evaluate the validity and accuracy of these resources.

Global Community Public Relations Case Study: Assessment and Investigation of "My Blood is Red & Black" Hemoba Foundation Blood Donation Campaign This research study examines the blood donation campaign launched by the Hemoba Foundation of Bahia, Brazil and the Leo Burnett advertising agency. The ROSTE (Research, objectives, strategies, tactics, and evaluation) public relations research model was applied in this study to evaluate the process and implementation of this international cross-culture public communication campaign. Research findings suggest that the target public lacks motivation to donate blood unless a person with strong community image is involved. Dry Needling and Upper Trapezius Myofascial Trigger Points We explored if the use of Kinesiotape (KT) with Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT) was more effective in reducing lymphedema in patients who have had a mastectomy versus CDT alone. This condition is prevalent in women with breast cancer following a mastectomy. Primary treatment for the lymphedema is CDT and includes skin care, manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), exercise, and compression therapy with a multilayer bandage or garment. Based on our research findings, treatment protocols varied and KT was not found to be beneficial when used alone to treat lymphedema in patients post mastectomy. Further research is needed.

Dry Needling and Upper Trapezius Myofascial Trigger Points We reviewed studies implementing a dry needling technique for pain management. Our results note a reduction in pain intensity and hyperactivity of myofascial trigger points in the upper trapezius, especially when dry needling is used in conjunction with exercise and stretching. Therefore, this modality incorporates high level of evidence for management of neck pain associated with muscle trigger points and tightness.

Does yoga therapy improve social interaction in pediatric patients with social behavioral concerns associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder compared to exercise intervention provided in physical therapy? Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is now regarded as the most common neurological and developmental disorder in children and social deficits associated with this disorder lead to maladaptive behaviors, including social isolation and irritability. We explored the use of yoga to combat these behaviors and compared it to general exercise programs prescribed in physical therapy. Although the literature is limited, the utilization of both of these intervention strategies is promising.

Does Blood Flow Restriction Therapy facilitate greater strength gains in quadriceps as compared to traditional strengthening protocol in adults ages 20-70 years? Blood flow restriction is a method of decreasing or occluding blood flow to a muscle/muscle group to promote hypertrophy and prevent atrophy. We reviewed studies comparing traditional strengthening methods to strength gains with blood flow restriction. We found that Blood Flow Restriction Therapy exercising with low loads was equal if not better than traditional strengthening with heavy loads/high intensity.

Additional studies, however, need to be performed to determine whether or not VRT is a necessary intervention for all individuals post-concussion.
