The Barstow School • 1

A t the end of the school year—and my first year at Barstow—I sensed a strong

feeling of accomplishment on campus. All felt fortunate to be part of the

Barstow community and its rich heritage, which was so evident as we shared the

excitement and hope of the 2009 graduating class.

It was a year of celebration commemorating our 125th anniversary—making us

the oldest independent school west of the Mississippi. I was

especially pleased to welcome all those who attended our an-

niversary events including the many alumni who returned for

our Cum Laude induction ceremony, Embry Gallery recep-

tion, Education Forum and especially The Pretenders 100th

anniversary. My deep gratitude goes to Anne Russ, who chaired

the 125th Anniversary Celebration and all who served on that

committee. I also wish to thank Mary Coble, Laurie Ingram

and the BPA members who made the Bravo! for Barstow Gala

and Auction such a success.

There were many achievements in the last year which were

made possible through your generous support. I can report that your contributions

have been well spent:

Barstow’s theater department magnificently produced • RENT: School Edition,

which was released last year especially for school performances. Barstow was one

of only 25 schools in the country to perform this musical.

This was an outstanding year for the athletics department. As part of our mis-•

sion, all students at Barstow have an opportunity to participate in school sports.

Girls soccer and boys baseball won district championships, our girls doubles

tennis team and the boys tennis team also each brought home tournament

championships and Barstow athletes recorded two top-ten finishes at the state

track meet.

We are enhancing the quality of early childhood programs with the addition •

of Creative Curriculum, which offers the highest quality curriculum materi-

als, and services that are developmentally appropriate and reflect the most

innovative thinking.

Our one-to-one laptop program, which integrates the •

use of tablet personal computers throughout all classes and at

home, is now used by grades 6–12 and remains the only laptop

program of its kind in the city.

We could not have reached our goals without your caring

commitment to our school through charitable giving. The

Annual Fund is critical because it bridges the gap between our

revenue from tuition and the costs of running the school. We

are fortunate for our long tradition of philanthropy that has

allowed Barstow to grow and to fulfill our mission to create a

mutually supportive, trusting environment that nurtures intel-

lectual, physical, emotional and moral growth.

I look forward to the year ahead and know that together we can achieve new

goals to benefit our students and begin a new chapter in our long, esteemed history.

4 • Donor Report 2008 – 2009

E very year, there are donors whose passion for The Barstow School is demon-

strated through their charitable giving and volunteer leadership. George W.

Potter, Jr. and his daughter Anne Potter Russ ’78 have matched their philanthropic

passion to their deeds and – through their support – ensured a

legacy for the future and an outstanding 125th anniversary year.

The Potter Family Endowed Chair of Fine and Performing

Arts was established last year through a major gift from the

Potter family, which will also be used to endow future capital

needs for Barstow’s fine and performing arts program. This

generous contribution was given in honor of the family’s four

generations who have attended the school.

In reflecting on her family’s long association with The

Barstow School and her own Barstow experience, Anne said,

“Actually, it’s more than the longevity. There is an intangible

thing that can’t be described until one has graduated. I would call it a sense of com-

munity and home—like a second family—which makes Barstow so special.” She

sees the spirit of Barstow as greater than any outside distractions, of which there have

been many in the school’s 125 years.

When the 125th anniversary year was approaching, Anne knew that the school

could not just let this go by unnoticed. Something grand had to happen. Anne spear-

headed the effort to organize the 125th Anniversary and gave action to her vision. Loyal

Barstow supporters did not have to be asked twice to serve on the committee, and

under Anne’s leadership, they developed a series of events including the Cum Laude

ceremony, Embry Gallery reception, Education Forum, Reunion Weekend with the

100th Anniversary of The Pretenders and the BPA’s highly successful Bravo! for Barstow

Gala and Auction. In addition, Anne and the 125th archives committee created a 125th

Anniversary yearbook, The More Things Change, The More They

Stay the Same, featuring wonderful photographs that chronicle

our history from 1884 through today.

In remembering all the events, Anne said, “It was the

people standing and cheering on Friday night at The Pretenders

event that I’ll always remember. It showed a connection to

Barstow that never goes away. That spirit is impossible to de-

scribe. Even if someone has been gone for 30 years, when they

return, they get right back into it.”

When asked about their family’s philanthropy, Anne says

that she sees it as an investment – as a way to “pay it for-

ward” for other children. She sees a Barstow future with new

buildings and people but with the same sense of community,

innovative curriculum and highest quality teachers. She said,

“The quality of the faculty is a constant. Their devotion to the students, belief in the

institution and commitment to never give up on anyone helps our students achieve

their personal best.”

The Barstow School is very fortunate to have the Potter Family as part of its fam-

ily. We are exceedingly grateful for their philanthropic support, generosity of spirit

and belief in our mission.

Message from the Director of Development

When i review our list of donors from the last

year, I am always impressed but never surprised

by the generosity and commitment of our constituents.

I know how important The Barstow School’s mission and

heritage is to our parents and grandparents, alumni,

alumni parents, foundations, faculty, staff and friends

who have so generously contributed to the Annual Fund.

Though each group has a unique philanthropic focus, all

share the same passion for a Barstow education that fos-

ters intellectual, ethical and emotional growth in an atmo-

sphere as nurturing as it is rigorous.

Thanks to your support, our $600,000 goal for

the Annual Fund was surpassed as we raised a total of

$667,234. Your gifts support the strength of our programs

that place students in the spotlight on stage, inspire ath-

letes to break new records and create that “a-ha” moment

when a teacher helps a student grasp a new concept.

We have a wonderful tradition of charitable giving at

Barstow that goes back to our early years and has strength-

ened as we have grown. I have great hope for what we can

accomplish in the year ahead.

Pat Oppenheimer

Armillary Society

created in 2009, The Armillary Society honors consecutive giving—donors who have contributed to The Barstow School in each of the last five consecutive years. The school’s plan for growth needs the consistent support of each community member. The Armillary Society exemplifies the culture of philanthropy at Barstow.

I f ever there was a child born with Barstow blood coursing in his veins, a child

who, when pricked, bled green, that child was Lathrop Gates. His grandfather was

a founder, his father was a mainstay and daily presence at Barstow for over 40 years,

his aunts and cousins, all Barstow alums. Even right there in his

own sandbox, three of his four siblings—his sisters Paget and

Henrietta and his brother Marvin—were all Barstow students.

Clearly through what we called “the wonder years” the eyes of

Barstow were upon him.

But, alas, Lathrop was a Daisy, a member—a somewhat

stellar member—of the Pem-Day Class of ’65. I feel compelled

to mention here that in his wayward youth—maybe to escape

all those eyes—in a somewhat mystifying fit of adolescent

rebellion, Lathrop preferred the company of Sunset Hill girls.

But AFTER his years at Pem-Day—and AFTER his years

at Yale—and AFTER his stint in the Navy—and AFTER law

school at the University of Missouri—and AFTER practicing

law for nearly 25 years—he came to his senses and came home to Barstow. And what

an incredible homecoming it’s been.

Lathrop has served on the Barstow Board of Trustees for seven years and chaired

the Board for three of those years. During that time, his leadership, insight, intel-

ligence and dedication have guided our school to heights that were nearly unimagi-

nable before his arrival.

He chaired the search committee[s] that lured Art Atkison [and Shane A.

Foster] to Barstow and heralded a new era for our school. He lead the most success-

ful fundraising campaign in Barstow history and raised six and a half million dollars

for the new Lower School building. He worked with architects, stooped beside the

circle out front and broke the ground for that building and spent countless hours

helping to oversee the largest construction project since Barstow

moved to this campus forty years ago.

He crisscrossed the country many times to meet with

donors and alums from San Francisco to New York, Chicago

to D.C. He and his wife Dody—who by the way is NOT

a Sunset girl—opened their doors to host everything from

small alumni dinner parties to giant picnics for the entire

faculty and their spouses.

He weeded the flowerbeds in the courtyard and hand-

delivered packets to the trustees. He moved the furniture on

the stage and counted seats in the auditorium for the investi-

ture of a new headmaster and the dedication of a new building.

In fact, there are very few days when Lathrop HASN’T been

at Barstow and there’s very little Lathrop Gates HASN’T done

for Barstow—all with grace and tact and a consummate conviction that Barstow was,

is and will continue to be the finest school in the Midwest.

So while it’s true that Lathrop may have been “to Barstow born,” it’s also true

that with his help—his tireless, invaluable help—an even better Barstow was born.

So on behalf of my fellow alums—and the entire Barstow community, I say it’s time

to forgive those youthful indiscretions, those dalliances with Sunset Hill girls. Let

bygones be bygones. Lathrop, we are your people. We salute you, we thank you and

we welcome you as a Barstow alum.
