Imagine… You are a neonatologist caring for these delicate infants.

You’ve discovered that one of your patients has an artery in her heart that hasn’t closed properly and is causing strain on her heart and increasing the blood pressure to the arteries of her lungs.

Thiscondition–calledpatentductusarteriosus(PDA)-occursmostoften in preterm babies. Efforts are made to encourage the artery to close naturally or with the use of medication, but for some infants surgery is required.

Imagine… You are a neonatal surgeon who must perform surgery to close this artery in a heart the size of a walnut.

Your “operating room” is limited to the confines of an incubator.

The Giraffe® OmniBed® is the most advanced incubator available today. The OmniBed features a rotating bed so the caregiver can position the bed according to height and comfort, an elevating hood to provide instant and uncompromised access to the baby, and an integrated weight scale and x-ray cassette tray, all that help ensure minimal disturbance to the baby, who needs as much rest as possible.

Wouldn’t significantly less pain, less blood loss and scarring, shorter recovery time, and ultimately, a faster return to normal daily activities be important to you?

Columbia St. Mary’s was the first healthcare system in Wisconsin to utilize the 3D da Vinci® Surgical Robot to operate with better visualization and the most accurate precision and control by creating only a few small incisions.

Highly specialized physicians, nurses, therapists and dozens of other health-care providers work together to create a specialized care plan for each patient at the Regional Burn Center, located at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Milwaukee.

The Burn Center’s highly trained and experienced staff members use state-of-the-art equipment and the latest burn treatments to provide their initial assessment and ongoing intensive and surgical care.

Just as important, the Burn Center team provides patients and their families emotional support that is an important part of the total rehabilitation of burn patients.

What appeals most to parents about Columbia St. Mary’s 4D Perinatal Ultrasound is that the image offers them a better visualization of their baby’s facial features and the ability to see the baby move in real time.

Physicians, however, are most impressed by the machine’s advanced 2D image that allows a better assessment of fetal anatomy, especially important in a high-risk pregnancy.

Even an entertaining activity, such as playing Nintendo® Wii™, can seem a mountainous challenge when recovering from a devastating event such as a stroke.

Constraint-induced Movement Therapy coaxes patients to perform carefully graded activities while using a special mitt that restricts movement of the unaffected arm to promote increased use of the weaker arm – essentially teaching the brain to “rewire” itself following a major injury.

Exceptional Patient Experienceanimal-aSSiSted therapy“Iwonderwherewe’regoingtoday,”Louiethinks.“Swimming? Walkinginthepark?”

“Time to get out of the car, Louie,” Dave says. “We’re here.”

“Oh,boy!TodayisthedayIgettoworkwithFrank,”thinksLouie, an up-for-anything, nine-year-old golden retriever.

Frank is paralyzed from the waist down and is in therapy at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee to regain strength, muscle control and to learn to walk again.

This past spring, Frank took a new step in his road to recovery when his therapist suggested he try Animal-assisted Therapy – an innovative approach that helps brighten Frank’s spirits, facilitates patients reaching therapy goals more readily and makes therapy sessions seem to go by faster.

Louie helps Frank as he practices standing, balancing and beginning to walk again. Louie is glad to help out by having Frank bend down low or lean forward to brush his fur, pet his head or offer him treats, all while making Franks trunk and leg muscles work hard at getting stronger.

Louie was born to be a therapy dog. This golden-haired brute’s calm demeanor, complemented by years of training, make him a perfect match for Columbia St. Mary’s Animal-assisted Therapy program.

Louie was helped by obedience training when he was just a mere pup and, in his vast nine years, has gone through much more intensive training

to become a therapy dog. After a two-hour test for behavior, obedience and temperament, Louie was officially certified as a therapy dog.

Following that certification, Louie and Dave, Louie’s handler, completed extensive one-on-one training with Columbia St. Mary’s program director and certified animal-assisted therapist.

“Animal-assisted Therapy focuses on the needs of each patient by utilizing specially trained dogs not only to offer comfort but to help build muscle strength, develop movement control and even work on language and cognitive skills,” explains Laura Hey, occupational therapist and director of the Animal-assisted Therapy program at Columbia St. Mary’s.

Although Frank is one of Louie’s favorite patients, Louie spreads his affection to other patients as well.

On a typical visit, Louie first stops in the waiting areas where family and friends await news about their loved ones and then visits patients in their hospital rooms or, perhaps, in the chemotherapy infusion department. His presence brightens their spirits, helps alleviate stress and can ultimately help patients heal faster.

Animal-assisted Therapy is funded by donors to Columbia St. Mary’s Foundation.

SkyCeilings™ are photographic illusions of real skies that create a visually striking environment and create a positive experience for our patients.

These innovative ceiling treatments offer a relaxing focal point for cancer patients undergoing radiation treatment; treatment that often requires no physical movement for 30 minutes or more.

The Van Dyke Haebler Center, located at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Columbia, is designed for women by women.

Besides its rich wood finishes and colorful murals, special amenities such as plush terry cloth robes and a private gowned waiting area, have been added to promote comfort and privacy.

12

In 2007, Columbia St. Mary’s launched a Patient and Family Advisory Council to create a partnership between families and professionals with the ultimate goal of increasing patient and family satisfaction in the healthcare experience.

Every year, cancer survivors from Columbia St. Mary’s join together and celebrate life through events like the Cancer Survivor Comedy Sportz night and the annual Cancer Survivor Picnic.

They celebrate being a part of a unique survivorship “club” through laughter and camaraderie.

With acuity-adaptable rooms, a nurse or physican can quickly adjust the room around the current needs of a patient, resulting in fewer transfers of cardiac and critical-care patients to different rooms. Later, as the patient’s health improves, the room can be adjusted again.

This change reduces stress for the patient, family and caregivers.

In addition, more patients can receive the critical care they need close to home.

Columbia St. mary’S foundation donor fundinG for the exCeptional patient experienCeFunding for the exceptional patient experience is essential to your physical, emotional and spiritual healing. Studies prove that education, comfort items, complementary therapies and survivorship programs all help decrease stress levels and help your body heal better and faster.

ThatisexactlywhatDavidThomasandothervisitorstotheNewLifeFood Pantry will encounter any Wednesday that they come to pick up their monthly groceries.

When David arrived at the food pantry in October 2007, he was surprised to find the grand opening of the Community-based Chronic DiseaseManagement(CCDM)Clinic, nowlocatedwithinthefoodpantry. After agreeing to have his blood pressure taken, he was further surprised to hear that his dangerously high blood pressure put him at risk to have a stroke at any time.

David’s story doesn’t end there.

The clinic not only provides health screenings but also treatment and education on hypertension, diabetes, obesity and smoking cessation, as well as access to a social worker who can help determine whether a person qualifies for any government healthcare programs.

David immediately had “labs” drawn, was seen by a doctor and then received low-cost hypertension medication to begin lowering his blood pressure.

The CCDM Clinic – a collaborative partnership between Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin – is taking a new, proactive approach to health care for uninsured people by locating at a site they already frequent.

“We’re taking a ‘window of opportunity’ approach,” explains Bill Solberg, director of community services for Columbia St. Mary’s.

The partners hope that the clinic will screen, educate and serve 1,500 impoverished people this year.

As the number of the uninsured people soars, it becomes increasingly difficult to find appropriate management of their chronic diseases, which require ongoing care. Anticipating expansion to at least three more clinics by June 2010, the partnership is providing much-needed services to underserved populations.

CCDM is made possible by a three-year grant from the Healthier WisconsinPartnershipProgram(HWPP),anendowmentprogram of the Medical College of Wisconsin.

With a third-world level infant mortality rate devastating Milwaukee’s most vulnerable population, Columbia St. Mary’s and the hospital’s Julia Means, RN, decided to make a difference.

The Blanket of Love program surrounds young central city, African American mothers-to-be with childbirth education, parenting skills, problem-solving techniques and mentoring.

After the birth of her child, the young mother, her infant and members of her family are welcomed back to the group to learn more about infant care and parenting skills.

Madre Angela Dental Clinic (MADC) is a dental health clinic dedicated to serving the uninsured in the community. Services include urgent dental care as well as restorative care, appliances and dental hygiene services.

New to MADC is Smart Smiles, Columbia St. Mary’s comprehensive school-based oral health program, which brings dental care and preventative services, including dental sealants, to children in Milwaukee schools, with an emphasis on care to schools with high poverty rates.

New pediatric patients at Columbia St. Mary’s North Avenue Family Health Center will get an unexpected surprise at their next check-up.

Reach Out and Read is a national program that provides a book for each new pediatric patient, allows the physician to engage and calm the child and helps teach parents the importance of reading and its correlation to good health.

Columbia St. Mary’s volunteers also participate by reading aloud to children in the waiting areas.

Cramped work space, low lighting, overhead noise and co-worker interruptions are now a thing of the past since the new Columbia St. Mary’s Training Center opened in August 2007.

These were all challenges that the trainers dealt with on a daily basis while charged with performing one of the hospital’s most important tasks – training and certifying our nurses, physicians and other hospital support staff.

The center offers a large, open space for training groups through video, lecture and hands-on demonstrations, as well as smaller, private rooms for testing.

Community benefitJust as important to us as providing the best care is that our care is available to all. We are steadfast in our commitment to those in greatest need, who have the fewest resources.

Our six free clinics provide emergency and primary care to the most vulnerable in our community. Community outreach programs reach those with few resources and little access to their critical healthcare needs. Last year weprovidedmorethan35,000patientencountersinclinics and at our hospitals at no charge.

Columbia St. Mary’s is proud of its new model of care created through the Community-based Chronic Disease Management Clinic. This clinic will serve as a model for future initiatives, find solutions to the important issues of chronic disease such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, and reach people within their own community.

Columbia St. Mary’s is a critically important safety net in our community. We have enjoyed a 150-year history of excellence and service to our community, and our commitment will only continue to grow. The suffering of the underserved impacts us all.

Columbia St. Mary’s Foundation has committed more than $5 million over the course of our Beyond Medicine Campaign to the needs of the most vulnerable in our community.

Columbia St. mary’S hoSpital milwaukeeOpening in early 2010, Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Milwaukee will be a model for healthcare transformation throughout the country.

Using evidence-based design, the new hospital incorporates proven elements to improve patient outcomes, increase patient satisfaction, and aid in the recruitment and retention of top quality staff. This design enhances the healing process, provides patients with more control over their surroundings, eases stress for patients and their families, and ultimately leads to better outcomes.

Columbia St. Mary’s Foundation is committed to making the hospital patient-centered through funding of advanced treatments and technologies and enhancements to create an exceptional patient experience.
