When my sons, Peter and Jonathan, enjoyed Camp Chewonki and their Chewonki Wilderness Trips, myhusband and I were pleased, but none of us had any idea that our children’s experiences would launchmy own Chewonki adventure. I joined the advisory board ten years ago in gratitude for the boys’

camp and trip leaders. Three years later, after learning more about this extraordinary organization, I became atrustee. I discovered a lot more about Chewonki’s history and vision for the future while serving as co-chair ofthe committee that helped plan the Centennial Celebration in 2015.

And now, as of last May, I am the first woman to serve as chair of the board of trustees. I am honored andinspired to be taking up this new role and working closely with President Willard Morgan, senior staff, boardcolleagues, and many of you to shape Chewonki’s next hundred years.

I count Chewonki friends among the finest people I know. They are dedicated to helping young people learnabout themselves and the natural world. Chewonki educators encourage personal growth and leadership. They cultivate confident, curious, engaged citizens involved with the world and the communities, small and large, they daily help to build and sustain.

Please join me in celebrating last year’s achievements and looking forward to the challenge and joy of increasing Chewonki’simpact and expanding this wonderful community of children, families, teachers, and leaders.

Yours,

roseanne SaalfieldChair, Chewonki Board of Trustees

thank you for the many ways you showed your support for Chewonki over the past year. Whether youcontributed to the Chewonki Annual Fund, an endowment fund, or a capital project; provided a grant;volunteered; or simply spread the word about the amazing place Chewonki is for young people, you

helped advance our mission, and I am grateful. Here are a few highlights of our work together in FY 2018:•The Abele Family Foundation Challenge increased participation and dollars raised from Maine Coast

Semester alumni--a wonderful way to celebrate the semester’s 30th anniversary. In response to thisachievement, the foundation gave Chewonki $75,000 for financial aid.

•Several donors established legacy funds through bequests, some memorializing a loved one. These powerfuland emotional gifts will support Chewonki campers in perpetuity.

•The Elmina B. Sewall Foundation made a three-year commitment to Chewonki and our partners in the ELLMS collaborative tobuild on the previous three successful years of our Whole School Whole Communities project. For Chewonki this means theopportunity to continue our educational initiatives for public school children in Wiscasset and the Bath area.

•Foresighted donors made gifts and commitments to support site planning for future building projects and direct support for newMaine Coast Semester faculty housing, now under construction.

In these ways and many more, the Chewonki community united as a force for good last year. On behalf of all the staff, thank you!I look forward to the adventures we will share with you in the year ahead.

Sincerely,

Willard morganPresident

“Food is central to the Chewonki experience: we

share meals around campfires and round tables, and

we grow and harvest some of our food, fiber, and

firewood on our farm.

We do this work with intention, seeking to maximize

the production potential of our small farm while

integrating young people meaningfully into every

aspect of production and preparation.

We work alongside each other with integrity,

sincerely engaging and sitting with the difficult

questions that accompany our food choices. And we

seek to minimize the negative impact of our food

choices while multiplying the positive impact of food

as the very sustenance of life and as a foundation of

community.”Bill Edgerton (Kitchen Manager) and Megan Phillips (Farm Manager)

The Elmina B. Sewall Foundation announced

in June a three-year, $750,000 commitment to

an innovative initiative created by Chewonki

and four other organizations. The foundation

is providing $250,000 annually through 2020 to

Whole Schools Whole Communities, an effort

to increase access to educational opportunities

for Maine children in low-income communities

and strengthen public school curricula through

hands-on outdoor learning.

The five organizations working together as

Environmental Living and Learning for Maine

Students (ELLMS) are Chewonki, The Ecology

School, the Schoodic Institute at Acadia

National Park, and the University of Maine

4-H Centers at Bryant Pond and Tanglewood.

Since 2011, the Sewall Foundation has

granted $1,650,000 to ELLMS. “The

foundation’s outstanding staff and board have

played an essential role,” says Chewonki

President Willard Morgan. “This far-seeing

foundation shares our determination to

improve the lives of Maine children, getting

them outside to learn about the environment,

themselves, and their communities. We are

deeply grateful for the opportunity to do

this work.”

Dedication in action: Karen abele Scheu

To honor Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki’s

30th anniversary, Semester 3 alumna Karen Abele

Scheu and the Abele Family Foundation wanted

to do something big. They created the Abele

Family Foundation Challenge, promising to match

alumni donations up to $60,600 as we headed

toward the August reunion and celebration on

Chewonki Neck.

Semester alumni responded with amazing

enthusiasm, contributing $82,567. Delighted,

Karen increased the Abele Family Foundation’s

gift to $75,000. What generous commitment by

everyone! The dollars raised will support financial

aid, helping to ensure that we can welcome the

best students, regardless of family finances.

Many thanks to Karen and her family for their

friendship, philanthropy, and leadership.

President Willard Morgan, Head of Semester School SusanFeibelman, Karen Abele Scheu, and Director of DevelopmentPeg Willauer-Tobey
