Hello Inland Empire Chapter members! We are well into the spring season and excited for

what the rest of 2014 holds. While I understand we are all busy with work and family, I urge you to continue to stay in touch with your IE Chapter. Take advantage of the support and education we offer you. Remember, networking with your peers and attending educational events will help

you stay “on top of your game.”

Speaking of educational events, we have one coming up. On June 10, we have LCIS rep and Obamacare aficionado Ashley Hissong providing updates on the Affordable Healthcare Act. Join us at LUNA restaurant in Corona and bring your questions; this meeting is not to be missed.

Recent Happenings On April 8, we had a general meeting in Ontario where SoCal Water$mart rep Kirstin Henninger gave us updates on the SoCal Water$mart program offered by the Metropolitan Water District and its member agencies. She also provided attendees with tips for using the millions of dollars in rebates currently available for water efficient landscaping measures to grow their business.

On April 26, the Green Industry Hall of Fame held their Induction Dinner and ceremonies at Black Gold Golf Course in Yorba Linda. The event was a beautiful success with more than 170 in attendance. Those who attended enjoyed a delicious dinner and networking while some of the most

distinguished names in landscaping and related fields were inducted into the Green Industry Hall of Fame. I’m proud to say that CLCA was well represented on the 2014 inductee list with members Mike Baron, Fred Hanker and myself being among the individuals honored this year.

UC Riverside has issued an alert on the Western Bark Beetle that is just NOW vectoring the fatal Foamy

Bark Canker fungus to Coast Live Oaks in California from Monterey County south to Orange County. The beetle

has not been known to carry the disease before and this is compounded by the stress induced by the current drought. This could create catastrophic damage to California’s native oak forests and urban trees alike.

Once an infected beetle bores into an oak truck, there is no treatment to save the tree. An infected branch can and should be removed (and disposed of) to attempt to save the tree and reduce spread of the disease.

Foamy Bark canker fungus blocks the flow of water and nutrients in both the xylem and phloem tissues of the tree. Evidence of the active fungus is a reddish sap and cream colored foam oozing from the cambium layer of the bark. The only evidence on a near dead tree may be the small bore holes left by the beetle. Remove any infected tree immediately and chip or burn the wood. If you have Coast Live Oaks on the properties you manage be mindful to not only observe those trees but the surrounding area for evidence of the beetle or the disease. You may be able to save trees with preventative care if there is evidence of the disease or beetle.

ManagementIn the case of Foamy Bark Canker vector control the best defense is a good offense in cultural practices that improve tree vigor; practically nothing can be done to control most bark beetles once trees have been attacked. Because the beetles live in the protected habitat beneath the bark, it is difficult to control them, POST infestation with insecticides. With drought conditions in California, stressed Live Oaks will become common, which could provide a greater population of infected trees. It is important not to neglect the health, and especially the water requirements of the Oaks you manage. Trees that have received landscape water tend to be dependent on some of that water to stay healthy. Deep root watering is also much more beneficial than surface applications for the benefit of shrubs and groundcovers.

If trees or shrubs are infested, prune and dispose of bark beetle-infested limbs. If the main trunk is attacked by bark beetles and diseased, the entire tree or shrub should be removed. Unless infested trees are cut and infested materials are quickly removed, burned, or chipped on site, large numbers of beetles can emerge and kill nearby host trees, especially if live, unattached trees nearby are weakened or stressed by other factors. Never pile infested material adjacent to a live tree or shrub.

Chemical ControlTreatment must target the adults by spraying the bark so that beetles are killed when they land on trees and attempt to bore into the bark to lay eggs. Chemically treating trees that have been previously attacked will provide no significant benefit and could kill beneficial insects. Systemic

insecticides, meaning those that are implanted or injected through the bark or applied to soil beneath trees, have NOT been shown to prevent attack or control populations of bark beetles. Although new systemic products are being investigated, they are not currently recommended for bark beetle control.

How to Apply InsecticidesProtective spraying for bark beetles must be done by a licensed pesticide applicator. They will determine the specific pesticide to be used and effective timing of the application. The applicator must use a product with bark beetles listed on the label, and mix and apply the formulation following label directions. Proper application involves thoroughly drenching the main trunk, exposed root collar near the base of the tree, and larger branches with a pyrethroid, such as Astro or Dragnet, or any of the flowable (EC) formulations of the chemical carbaryl to prevent new bark beetle infestations. (These products are not available to home users) The material must be applied before the new adults penetrate the bark surface of the tree.

Biological ControlWhen bark beetles attack trees, predators and parasites are attracted to feeding and mating bark beetles. Predators are more important in regulating bark beetle populations than parasites. Natural enemies are highly unlikely to save an infested tree, but they can reduce bark beetle population size, thereby reducing the number of nearby trees that are attacked and killed by bark beetles. The release of predators and/or parasites into sites infested with bark beetles has not been an effective tactic to suppress bark beetle populations. The following natural enemies attack the beetle, but rarely control it: woodpeckers, several predaceous beetles such as the blackbellied clerid (Enoclerus lecontei) and a trogossitid beetle (Temnochila chlorodia), a predaceous fly (Medetera aldrichii), snakeflies, and parasitic wasps.

While this news has the potential to create havoc to our Oak population, it is part of the natural cycle that culls weaker trees from the population which has made the Live Oaks such a durable trees so well suited for our climate. As landscape professionals it is our obligation to protect the assets of our clients, and Oaks are one of the most valuable. Please be vigilant and commutative of this new threat as part of your drought response and overall landscape management.

Netafim USA, a leading provider of innovative drip irrigation solutions for the landscape and agriculture industries, has ushered in a new era in water-efficient

irrigation system management with the introduction of a new line of intuitive, web-based, smart controllers for the landscape.

Developed exclusively for Netafim by Tucor, the Netafim Landscape Controllers (NLC) are powerful, multi-function landscape controllers expressly designed to maximize the water efficiency of any landscape, while reducing the time, labor and costs incurred when expanding a system into new areas of the landscape.

Setting a new precedent for landscape water-use efficiency, the NLC controllers determine the unique watering needs of a specific landscape by incorporating both historical and current weather data as well as real-time data from soil moisture sensors that monitor the amount of moisture available to plants in each zone.

Putting the industry’s most advanced monitoring and water-saving technology right at the fingertips of irrigation and landscape professionals, the NLC series of irrigation controllers offers an advanced suite of water-management

features that include: intuitive programming for retrofit and expansion, remote management capabilities that allow professionals to adjust programming and review schedules of multiple sites from any internet-ready device, and the ability to seamlessly integrate with Netafim’s Total Cycle Management, the most advanced soil and climate monitoring system available.

“Most weather-based smart controllers are limited in that they determine a landscape’s watering needs based on conditions above the soil, without any insight as to what is happening at the root-zone, where it

matters most,” said Mauricio Troche, director of landscape, Netafim USA. “The NLC controllers incorporate data from both above and below the soil surface to create an ongoing dialog between the controller, climate and landscape, ensuring that the landscape is receiving the precise quantity of water needed for healthy plant growth. When paired with a Netafim drip irrigation system, the water savings is unmatched.” Developed for use in a variety of configurations from basic residential systems to large-scale commercial applications, the conventional (NLC-100S Conventional) converts a conventional system to a water-efficient remote management system, while the 2-wire decoder-based (NLC-100D Decoder) can control up to 100 stations with wire runs of up to 16,000’. The Hybrid (NLC-100S Hybrid) model combines the advantages of a conventional and decoder system, allowing retrofitting of an existing controller and the addition of multiple valves to an existing system without the need for additional labor or cost intensive rewiring and retrenching. Netafim also announced the release of its NLC-3D module, an innovative ‘plug and play’ interface that converts any conventional controller into an infinitely scalable, 2 wire decoder–based controller that uses existing wiring.

“The addition of the hybrid controllers, as well as the NLC-3D module, allows contractors to easily add zones or flow sensing equipment without rewiring the entire system, saving time and costs on the job site when installing or expanding today’s modern landscapes,” added Troche. “By adding the NLC controllers to an already expansive product offering that includes everything from Techline® tubing to filters, regulators, valves, and meters, landscape designers, contractors and end-users are now able to reap the full water, time and labor saving benefits of a complete Netafim irrigation system.”

For more information on Netafim’s line of NLC Landscape Controllers, Total Cycle Management, or the company’s industry leading drip irrigation products visit www.NetafimUSA.com, or contact a local Netafim distributor.
