How are organisms classified into domains and kingdoms

Today, a 3 domain system is commonly used

Within the domains are kingdoms

Organisms are placed into domains and

kingdoms based on their cell type, their

abililty to make food, and the number

of cells in their body

Domain BacteriaProkaryotes unicellular organisms whose cells lack a nucleus

nucleus dense center are of a cell that contains nucleic

 acids chemical instructions

nucleic acids are not contained within the nucleus

Bacteria all around autotrophs and heterotrophs

Nov 291:16 PM

Domain Archea

unicellular prokaryotes

Archea Greek word for ancient

These are organisms able to exist in harsh conditions

like the bottom of the ocean, in hot springs or

inside volcanic vents

Autotrophs and heterotrophs

Have a different chemical makeup and different

cell structure

Domain Eukarya

Organisms whose cells have a nucleus are called Eurkaryotes

Includes, Protista, Fungi, Animalia, PlantaeProtista (protists)

eukaryotic

not classified as plants, animals or fungus

unicellular or mulitcellular

autotrophs and heterotrophs

"odds and ends"

Nov 291:29 PM

Fungi

molds, mushrooms and mildew

most are multicellar

few are unicellular like yeast

heterotrophs

found everywhere on land but few in fresh water

feed by absorbing nutrients from dead or decaying

organisms

Plants

multicellular

eukaryotic

autotrophs

great variety

most live on land

ex. redwoods, marsh grass, dandelions, peas

Animals

multicellular

eukaryotic

heterotrophs

different adaptations

live in diverse environments
