ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The planning and design of this guide for the high school
reading labnratcry
was under the direction of Anita
Dore, Acting Assistant Director, In Charge of the
Bureau of English, and Muriel Mandell, Coordinator, of the New
York City Right to
Read Impact Project.
Muriel Mandell headed the research committee assisted by Stephen
O'Donnell,
Catherine Treadwell, Ilah Kelstein, Leonard Jenal and norman Cohen.
The Right
Read Taxonomy drew from previous compilations directed
by
D-. S. Alan Cohen of Ferkauf, Dr. John E. Connelly of the State
University College
tt Fredonia, Edwa Steirnagle of the El Paso Public Schools, and many
New York City
high school reading teachers, particularly those working in the
New York State
Urban High School Reading Acceleration Program.
In addition, the reseaf,:hers
had access to the Bank of Objectives prepared by the Nev York State
Education
Department.
Editorial assistants were Lorraine Kirby, Myrna G. Weiner, and
Weinstein.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE
When it is determined, as a result r,f testing or in-P,rmal
that a student is deficient in a particular skill, this-iruile will in-
dicate materials, at the apprrpriate reacting level, t- remediate the
deficiency.
For example, if your student has difficulty in recognizing and
identifying main ideas, you will find a variety of materials listed in
the materials column, labelled Easy, Medi-:_-1 or Hard under the section
or. Comprehension, starting on page 81.
You and your student can select
the ones available in your classroom or school which are the most suit-
able.
Once you have introduced the material and taught the skill, the
student can progress on his own, using prepared an3wer keys to check
himself.
The teacher will find materials listed for other skills which
can be used in like manner.
Materials found particularly useful with students for whom English
is a second language are so indicated by an L in both appendices.
Many
of these supply pictures and/or oral reinforcement of the printed word.
In the area of Reading for Pleasure, fiction with a setting familiar to
tht student, as well as familiar myths, fairy tales, and biographies,
set up the fewest barriers to reading progress.
